NBC has given a straight-to-series order to “Connecting,” a comedy about friends who stay in touch over video-chat as they navigate the new normal.
Universal Television will serve as the studio for the eight-episode series, which is written and executive produced by “Blindspot” creator Martin Gero and his frequent collaborator and fellow “Blindspot” writer and producer Brendan Gall.
The logline for the comedy series reads “An ensemble comedy about a group of friends trying to stay close (and sane) through video chats as they share the highs and lows of these extraordinary times.”

Every month comes and every month this article demands to be written. It’s a tragic, inescapable fact that movies leave streaming services all the time, but it’s a privilege to be able to inform you when their number is up. I well up every time. No joke. I put a box of Kleenex on standby. Honest.
Today’s departure list concerns every film leaving Hulu at the end of July (on the 31st). Lots of names you won’t necessarily be familiar with, but I guarantee one will be impossible to miss.
A Life Less Ordinary (1997)
Batman Begins (2005)
Billy the Kid (2013)
The Chumscrubber (2005)
Constantine (2005)

There are few surefire successes in television. It just so happens that with its new releases for May 2020, Hulu almost certainly found itself one. May 8 sees the debut of all eight episodes of Solar Opposites, the latest sci-fi animated effort from Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland. This is a brand new story featuring a family of aliens crashing to Earth and learning to live amongst the rest of us weirdos. But the animation style and sci-fi themes hew so closely to Rick and Morty that there’s no way this won’t be a hit.
On the off chance Solar Opposites doesn’t set the world ablaze, Hulu has some other intriguing content lottery tickets for May. The Great premieres on May 15 and is a comedic period piece about Catherine the Great starring Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult. You can’t accuse Hulu of not taking big swings this month!

It goes without saying that the pandemic is keeping everyone stuck inside with little to do besides watch television, play video games, and read. Here’s some great news, though: There’s plenty coming to Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, and Amazon Prime in May, so put away the books and the games, and get ready to binge some excellent shows and films.
On Netflix, you can catch some notable comedy entries next month like the Jim Carrey-led Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and Fun with Dick and Jane, while action-horror fans may be delighted to hear that multiple Underworld films will be dropping on the service. The lesser-known Jarhead trilogy will be available on the 1st, and the first two pics in the Back to the Future trilogy will join the third film for streaming. Going UNDERGROUNDEverybody and their dog, it seems, feels this off imperative to try to identify common themes in the handful of festival films they (we) (I) see in a given year. It's the Ghost of Hegel, I suppose, demanding that we make sense of our times by referring to some Zeitgeist. (Zeitgeist? Isn't this just as likely to Strand the FilmsWeLike in some oh-so-precious Music Box, to be unearthed years later by members of some as-yet-unassembled Cinema Guild? But I digress.) There may or may not be tendencies running through this year's feature selections, and if there are, that could have as much to do with the people who selected them than with any global mood. But there does seem to be a generalized turning-inward, with filmmakers making works about themselves and their immediate lives, the cinematic process, and the very complexities of communicating with other human beings. There are...

Canadian filmmaker Paul Gross is back with another riveting war film. The director, known for 2008’s Passchendale, brings his latest film Hyena Road to the Toronto International Film Festival, and it hits theatres on October 9th. We talk to the cast about making the film in Afghanistan, and their opportunity to tell a story about the Canadian military that many are unaware of.
The film stars Rossif Sutherland (son of Donald Sutherland), Clark Johnson, Jennifer Pudavick, and director Paul Gross himself. After debuting with the 2002 film Men with Brooms, Paul Gross has diverged away from the offbeat comedy and has now delivered two important Canadian war films. These are stories that are often overlooked, as Canada’s participation in the war is not something that is often depicted on film. The cast discuss their respect for Gross, who is telling important historical stories that our nation deserves to have heard.

I recently stumbled upon the Canadian sitcom Men With Brooms, which aired last year on the CBC channel in Canada. Men With Brooms wasn't picked up for a second season, making the 12 episodes of the first season the entire run of the series. That's a real shame in my mind, because as the show progressed it began to really develop into something special.
Men With Brooms was a sweet little sitcom about a group of friends who hang out in a bar and form a curling team. You know curling, that sport we try to care about during the Winter Olympics but can't because it's too boring? The one on ice with the stones and the brooms? It's all the excitement of hockey only without the fights, at one millionth of the speed and with no actual excitement.

[Trailer updated with English subtitled version.]Ah, curling, that most noble of sports in which balding, overweight men slide large rocks down a sheet of ice whilst screaming at the top of their lungs. Outside of hockey it is the only sport that Canada ranks as a true world power in, our one true nemesis at the rink being the Norwegians. Oh, you Norwegians and your fancy pants ...Curling, have you never had the chance to witness it, is a very silly sport - a fact which makes it the perfect subject for a sports comedy. Canada tried this one with Paul Gross' Men With Brooms but it appears we have been outdone by Norway's Ole Endresen and The King Of Curling (Kong Curling). The story...

I think this could be a break-out year for 'Battle of the Blades,' the Canadian competitive reality show that takes a 'Dancing with the Stars' approach to pairs figure skating, except the celebs are all male hockey players and the pros are all medal-winning female figure skaters. The show did plenty of business in its freshman year last year, but after the first real episode last night, I woke up to find several references to Theo Fleury's eyeliner in my Facebook newsfeed. If it's on Facebook, it must be big.
CBC plans to take advantage by placing another uniquely Canadian show in the Monday night timeslot right after the results show. It's called 'Men With Brooms,' and it's loosely based on a blockbuster Canadian movie. What constitutes a Canadian blockbuster? Slightly less than $5 million at the box office (that's Cad,...

It's not all Americana here at TVOvermind. Yours truly hails from Canada – Toronto to be exact – so when we got an invitation to attend CBC's 2010 Upfront presentation, one of our contributing writers was off and running to the red carpet. Sarah tells me that she had a great time speaking with some of the stars and snapping photos. We've pulled together some red carpet pics and snippets from her interviews below. I also suspect she made an enemy out of figure skater Kurt Browning, but I'm hoping he forgets all about that.

CBC, a Canadian public TV network, revealed a few days ago that Men with Brooms, a sitcom based on the hit Canadian film of the same name, will be part of its 2010 fall schedule grid.
Since The Cultural Post didn't attend to the CBC 2010 Fall Preview event, it unfortunately has no precise informations about the script of the TV series. However, from what we all know for now, the sitcom will take place many years after the events in the curling film Men with Brooms, a film made in 2002 starring Paul Gross.
Besides, have in mind that Men with Brooms will begin production in Winnipeg, Manitoba and will go through August. The curling scenes will be shot at an actual rink, the Fort Rouge Curling Club.
Paul Gross will have a cameo role in the sitcom and will be the narrator.
Finally, the sitcom Men with Brooms will premiere on Monday,...

CBC announced its fall schedule today, and had a smashing red carpet celebration (I hear tell) in honor of the fact. The even was packed with some of Canada's biggest stars, Erin Karpluk among them, and as you may know, I'm a big fan of Being Erica. And, since talking with Erin back in September, I've been a pretty big fan of hers as well. The CBC schedule didn't change all that much, apparently coming off a strong season, but there's an interesting new show coming, Men with Brooms, based on the film. A film I loved, by the way, and who hasn't been waiting for a show about curling? Of course, the key thing to remember is that Being Erica is returning for its third season, and is hot off several Gemini nominations, and a win for Erin.

Toronto – Just as William Shatner returns to TV with the new CBS sitcom "$#*! My Dad Says," the Montreal-born actor is headed to Canada to salute local films for the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. (CBC).
Shatner will host "Making A Scene," a retrospective on award-winning Canuck films, on Thursday, Sept. 23, the same night his upcoming CBS comedy drawn from a Twitter feed will air locally, courtesy domestic broadcaster CTV.
News of Shatner's Canadian gig came Thursday as the CBC unveiled a fall 2010 schedule in Toronto that plays its safe with returning shows and familiar faces.
Another Canadian, Alex Trebek, whose career was launched by the CBC, will return to host "Jeopardy!" weeknights at 7:30 after "Wheel of Fortune" at 7, and help usher in the public broadcaster's primetime schedule this fall.
With Canadian viewers mostly shunning rookie series until they perform in their second seasons, the CBC has chosen to rely on old favorites to bring viewers set-side.

Now that the Olympics are over, if you need more curling, you’re out of luck unless you live someplace like Minnesota or Manitoba. Or if you’re truly desperate for more of the game, you could check out the world’s most famous movie about curling. True, you’ve probably never heard of Men with Brooms, but that tells you something about how many movies about curling there actually are. Also: This is suitable for desperate Paul Gross fans, because the man is a god, even in extremely silly movies like this one. And he wrote and directed it too. Oh, the talent. *swoon*...

When we quiet and polite Canadians first began planning our non-violent take-over of Pajiba I breezily volunteered to do a Famous Canadians list. How difficult could it be to pick 10 Canadians who were famous for being more than just incredibly polite motherfuckers? Seventeen hours and eleventy billion Google hits later it became apparent that it was much more difficult than you bitches think. We've managed to smuggle, I mean introduce, a helluva lot of Canadians into the Us over the years and while some of them stick out like wearing a toque on a hot summer day, others have managed to blend in so well even I was surprised to discover they were one of us. So, in order to whittle my list down to 10 I decided to only include people who were universally recognized as Canadians.
And yeah, I realize there are famous Canadians out there other than actors (hello Frank Gehry!

As you may or may not know -- you really should if you don't -- today marks the start of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada. The best athletes in the world (for winter sports, at least) will converge on the city to compete for Gold, Silver and Bronze honors to determine who the best in the world is. For the next four years at least, until the next Winter Olympics. Personally, I expect the Canadian team to dominate in curling.
Movie buffs know that Hollywood has a long, rich history of Olympics-pegged movies. From Cinderella story tales of underdog hockey teams to far-fetched (but true!) stories of the first Jamaican bobsled team, there is no shortage of based-on-truth features built around this holiest of sporting events. So in honor of the 2010 Winter Olympics, we've decided to bestow medals upon the best, the worst and whatever falls in between. Hit...

Get excited for the upcoming Winter Olympics with what is arguably the only film ever made about the venerable Canadian sport of curling, starring Canada's finest: Paul Gross, Molly Parker, and Leslie Nielsen. Men With Brooms Dir. Paul Gross (2002) Part of the appeal of Hulu is that it's starting to function like the early days of cable television (a prime example: the USA Network's show USA Up All Night), providing a home to second-run films that are proudly B-level or Z-level low-budget camp. The type of film that would be weirdly appealing as you flip through the television stations, even though you haven't heard of it. Men With Brooms has that feel. It's not a technically good film, but between its likable cast (Paul Gross, Molly Parker, and Leslie Nielsen) and refreshing topic—the absurd, beer-swilling and ice skating Olympic level Canadian sport...

Toronto -- The Canadian Broadcasting Corp. has picked up a sitcom from E1 Television based on the popular Canadian curling movie "Men With Brooms."
The TV adaptation follows an earlier pilot written by Paul Mather ("Corner Gas") about four regular joes who hang out at the local curling rink.
The "Men With Brooms" series, in celebrating Canada's working guy culture, will echo another popular CBC comedy, "Little Mosque on the Prairie," also written in part by Mather.
Canada's public broadcaster also picked up a second half-hour comedy, "Insecurity," from Verite Films and produced by Virginia Thompson.
The "Insecurity" pilot was directed by Robert De Lint.
The CBC also renewed "The Ron James Show" for a second season.

The other day I started the Inglorious Basterds Blu-ray at a friends place and was greeted by an extra-hairy, gunslinging Paul Gross in a trailer for the upcoming Canadian comedy Gunless.* It's the story of -- get this -- a gunslinger who calls out a surly blacksmith (played by Tyler Mane, the new Michael Myers), only to find out that the town doesn't have one working pistol for the showdown. I laughed, put it on my mental movie to-do list, and carried on. But then I watched it again over at Quiet Earth (embedded after the jump), and found myself wondering: When will we get a Paul Gross v. Bruce Campbell showdown?
You know Gross ... right? No? He's the cutie T.J. Burke from Aspen Extreme. The red-clad mountie in Due South. Chris Cutter in Men with Brooms. The writer, director, and star of the 2008 Wwi war movie Passchendaele. And if you missed all that,...

I like Paul Gross. He used to be on a show called “Due South”, where he played a Canadian Royal Mountie that could do pretty much anything and everything. Sorta like a Canadian Superman, except in a goofy hat. He also starred in and directed “Men with Brooms”, which was funny. His latest is a Western comedy called “Gunless”. Gross stars as an American gunfighter name the Montana Kid, who shows up in a strange town populated by people who don’t know how to react to a gunfighter in their midst. The teaser trailer is pretty funny, and it co-stars Sienna Guillory, which has to mean this is a winner, but maybe that’s just my Sienna Guillory bias talking. A hardened American gunslinger is repeatedly thwarted in his attempts to mount a showdown in a friendly town in Canada where no one seems to understand or appreciate the...

Not to be outdone by the 2010 Vancouver/Whistler Olympic Games on rival CTV, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. is set to roll out winter sports-themed TV programming.
The Canadian pubcaster has ordered a sitcom pilot from E1 Television and Serendipity Point Films based on the popular Canadian curling movie "Men With Brooms," the directorial debut for actor Paul Gross ("Due South").
The 2002 homegrown comedy starred Gross, Leslie Nielsen and Molly Parker as part of a curling team reuniting to capture the national trophy. "Curling is something everyone in Canada is familiar with, a strange sport in quirky rinks where people can come and go and tell different stories," Mather said of the sitcom's premise.
