Session 9 was filmed at the Danvers State Insane Asylum in Danvers, Massachusetts. Unfortunately, the property was bought by Avalon Bay Properties and was demolished to make way for apartments. There are multiple websites dedicated to the hospital, and you can still find photos of the interior and exterior of the hospital.

Actually, no one is lying, at least not deliberately.

On Tuesday, Hank (while working alone) discovers a stash of valuable items hidden behind a wall of the Danvers asylum basement. Rather than report it, Hank decides to keep it all for himself.

However, he's afraid to try sneaking it out under the watchful eyes of his boss Gordon and his other crew members. Hank decides instead to come back alone later and steal it.

At the end of his work shift, Hank goes home to his shared apartment. There, he breaks up with his live-in girlfriend Amy. He also informs Amy that he is leaving her to go to casino school in Miami. (Whether or not he truly intends to do this is up for debate.) He does not, however, tell Amy anything about what he has uncovered at Danvers.

Hank then packs up all his belongings in his car. He heads back to Danvers (by which time it is quite dark), intending to steal the loot he uncovered earlier that day. Once in the pitch-black basement of Danvers, however, Hank encounters an unexpected development. He does not leave to go to Miami ... or anywhere else.

The next morning, Hank fails to show up for work. His fellow crew members (including the boss, Gordon) attempt repeatedly, without success, to reach him at his home. Finally, an irritable Phil suggests that he can probably reach Hank by phoning Phil's ex-girlfriend Amy. (The implication is that Hank and Amy have moved in together at some point.)

When Phil calls Amy, she tells him tearfully that last night Hank without warning abandoned her (not to mention his job), and left for "casino school in Miami." And so far as Amy knows, this is the truth.

Phil hangs up and repeats her story to the crew. To Phil, this inconsiderate and irresponsible course of action sounds utterly typical of Hank. Phil grows increasingly irritated and hostile when the veracity of his story (that Hank has gone to Miami) is challenged by the others. After all, didn't Phil hear it straight from Amy's lips? Why should they doubt him?

Actress Jurian Hughes is credited as the voice of Mary Hobbes and all of her "alters" heard on tape; that is, Billy, The Princess, and Simon. Some viewers have suggested that, given the deep and masculine timbre of his voice, Simon may in fact be the voice-over work of an uncredited actor (much as Mercedes McCambridge was originally uncredited for her voice work in The Exorcist); but there is no evidence to document this assertion. The film's makers have said, however, that some post-production digital sound work was used to further differentiate the voices of Mary Hobbes's "alters."
