Alamo programmers’ Top 10 of ‘09…plus Top 20 of the Decade!

The picture to the left has nothing to do with anything released in the last ten years, but it is from a movie.

Here in the Alamo programming office, movies are a big deal. We each watch approximately 215 movies per day, seven days a week, no holidays.

It’s a tough job…especially when it comes time to narrow down our favorites at the end of each year. It’s even more difficult to figure out what the best 20 films were in the past decade. But we do it all for you.

The lists below represent the most powerful and/or entertaining films of 2009, plus the finest we’ve seen since Y2K destroyed civilization. Take a look, disagree, get furious and attack us on the street.

Rather than ignore trailers in 2010, The Film Experience is joining the conversation. But we're not falling for that Omg! It'll Be Awesome trap. It's all about managing expectations since any film could be great or terrible and most are somewhere inbetween.

Inception, opening July 16th, is Chris Nolan's follow up to The Dark Knight starring Leonardo DiCaprio as some sort of idea thief, Ellen Page as some sort of telep -- well, her mind or her imagination is involved somehow (it's confusing. Yay!). When I met Joseph Gordon-Levitt last month I asked him who most of his scenes were with and he wouldn't say a word. Not a word. They're hiding details. Good for them.

Yes. The city curving up on itself is an interesting image but if I have to pick the one moment in the trailer that gets to me in a charged "I want to see this! »

It's been a busy decade for Tom Cruise. He kicked off the aughts married to Nicole Kidman, whom he divorced in 2001, just shy of their tenth anniversary and while she was three months pregnant (she later miscarried). Tom began dating 'Vanilla Sky' costar Penelope Cruz soon after and the two were together until 2004. In the spring of 2005 he began dating Katie Holmes and a year later she was pregnant with Suri. While Tom's arm candy has rotated several times over course of the decade, one thing has remained consistent: his love for red carpet Pda. This habit crested in 2005, which saw many full-on public make out sessions with Katie. It has cooled down somewhat since the birth of their child. My Thoughts: This trailer raises a lot of questions about the film’s story, and the curiosities from this teaser go beyond the typical question, “Will it be any good?” Hopefully the final product will be as mysterious as this teaser without being too obvious, as there’s a plethora of questionable moments that have the chance to be used cleverly. I’m stumped as to why the plane Diaz’s character is flying in was completely empty, or why Tom Cruise’s action character seems to be completely invincible. Do we have another movie with a “dream” twist on our hands? I hope not. But with the cast of Diaz and Cruise, I suppose we shouldn’t be too surprised if this »
