The Czech Film and Television Academy has selected Agnieszka Holland’s “Charlatan” to be its official entry in the International Feature Film category of the 93rd Academy Awards.
Its decision follows recent submissions by Singapore, Kosovo and Georgia. Other countries to have selected their entries include Bhutan, Taiwan, Ukraine, Bosnia, Ivory Coast, Luxembourg, Poland and Switzerland.
“Charlatan,” which premiered in the Berlinale Special Gala section of the Berlin Film Festival, is based on the true story of Czech healer Jan Mikolášek, who dedicated his life to treating the sick using medicinal plants. Throughout the war and turmoil of the 20th century he has to choose between his calling and his conscience.
Holland told Variety: “‘Charlatan’ tells the story of Mikolášek’s rise and fall. Of his moral fall and of his constant fight with the darkness inside him. It is the story of the mystery of a man, of the mystery of his special gift,...

Goran Paskaljević, the director of 18 feature films including Cabaret Balkan, How Harry Became a Tree and Midwinter Night’s Dream, died Friday of lung cancer in Paris, his family announced. He was 73.
Illness did not stop him from completing his final film, Despite the Fog (Nonostante la nebbia), which was shot in Italy last year. In the writer-director’s typical conjunction of personal drama and looming social disaster, the movie is about a couple who have suffered the loss of a son and give shelter to an orphaned migrant boy. It bowed at the Valladolid International Film Festival in Spain.

Among the many virtues of James Gray’s The Lost City Of Z is its sense of proportion, which turns a decades-spanning historical epic into a pas de deux between vision and madness. Unfortunately, most recent historical epics have been more on the order of Terry George’s The Promise: messes of soap and cheese. Here at last is a film that tackles the Armenian genocide by way of a flimsy love triangle and an international cast (it really captures the diversity of the Armenian people), straining so hard to show its good intentions that it doesn’t bother to be directed. What does a movie that can’t even mount a competent horse chase—despite repeated attempts—have to say about the murder of 1.5 million people? At least George can rest easy knowing that his film is less bungled than Bitter Harvest, the February release that turned ...

The rare specialty sequel led the weekend with Danny Boyle’s “T2 Trainspotting,” 21 years after the original’s breakout success. The TriStar release had the best initial numbers since the late-year awards contenders, but other debuts showed results that seemed underwhelming next to their pedigree.
This time last year, we saw the release of crossover successes “Eye in the Sky” and “Hello, My Name Is Doris,” but 2017 lacks the same heft. Last week’s breakout, “A Very Sordid Wedding” (The Film Collective) continued at its sole Palm Springs location but didn’t report results, suggesting the $40,000 start had a strong component of premiere hoopla and higher event pricing.

One year ago, the post-Oscar specialized rebound began with the release of “Eye in the Sky” and “Hello, My Name Is Doris.” Each opened with per-theater averages over $20,000; then, with support from older audiences all across the country, made $19 million and $14 million, respectively.
This year it’s “Personal Shopper,” with the French film starring Kristen Stewart showing unexpected interest. “Raw” (Focus) and “A Sense of the Ending” (Lionsgate) also managed PTAs over $10,000, indicating some chance for future success.
Ahead of any other new release in PTA was a single theater, premiere-event boosted initial date for “A Very Sordid Wedding” in Palm Springs. This week also saw the very limited opening of “Burning Sands,” the second film in the Sundance 2017 U.S. dramatic competition to find its home on Netflix. As usual, no gross for this, which is sort of beside the point.

I dont know where this photo is from but I love itDespite the R rating, or perhaps because of it, Logan opened much stronger than its 2013 predecessor The Wolverine (which eventually racked up $414 million globally). Logan will easily become the highest grossing Wolverine film by the end of its run thanks to what will surely be strong word of mouth... something this particular solo franchise has never experienced.

"You have your mission, Doctor, and I have mine." Paladin has debuted a trailer for the film The Ottoman Lieutenant, another historical war drama, this one directed by Joseph Ruben. Set during the first World War (or "The Great War"), the film is about a woman who ends up in a love triangle between an American doctor and a dashing lieutenant for the Ottoman Imperial Army. Josh Hartnett stars as the American, Michiel Huisman as the lieutenant, and Hera Hilmar as the woman who comes between them. The cast includes Ben Kingsley, Haluk Bilginer, Affif Ben Badra, Paul Barrett, Jessica Turner and Peter Hosking. For whatever reason this reminds me of Bitter Harvest, and sadly both films look quite mediocre. Here's the first official trailer for Joseph Ruben's The Ottoman Lieutenant, originally from Yahoo: A beautiful, strong-willed woman (Hera Hilmar), who, frustrated by ongoing injustice at home, leaves the...

We look at the complicated fan response to recent events on The 100 season 3. Major spoilers ahead...
Warning: contains spoilers for The 100 season 3 episode 7, Bitter Harvest, Arrow season 4 and Buffy The Vampire Slayer season 6.
When a show, any show, decides to kill off a fan-favourite character, there’s going to be some backlash. The fact that a few days ago The 100 chose to kill off Lexa, one half of the show’s same-sex love story, ensured that backlash would be even worse. Lexa is dead, and the cause of her death was, rather than as part of an epic battle or something heroic, a stray bullet meant for Clarke.
So people are angry, and, whether it should be able to or not, that anger could theoretically determine the future of The 100. This is a show that has built itself on the passion of fans and the power of word-of-mouth,...

The 100's "Bitter Harvest" is crazy. Emerson shows up in Clarke's life again, and it's up to her to decide how he's punished for his crimes. Pike, meanwhile, continues with his Donald Trumpish plans, but Octavia and Kane try to undermine him. To top it all off, we learn even more of these City of Light chips. And they're not good. It’s clear that the two of them are both united against the new chancellor and what he’s doing to the Grounders, but that doesn’t stop Kane from reprimanding Miller after he attempts to make light of the serious situation in which they find

Duplic8 have been named Got to Dance 2014 champions.
26-year-old Tobias Mead and his dance partner, 13-year-old Jak Tuite-Leach, beat Dance Illusion and Bitter Harvest to the crown in the live final this evening (August 29).
The street dancers were the last of the finalists to take to the Earls Court stage and had received some strong criticism from judges Kimberly Wyatt and Ashley Banjo earlier on.
In contrast to the two red stars they were previously awarded, the pair's mentor Adam Garcia told them that he had "believed in them from the start" following their individual performance.
As well as the 2014 title, Mead - who made it to the final of Britain's Got Talent as a soloist in 2010 - and Tuite-Leach will share a total of £250,000 in prize money.
"Sharing it with little Jak, it's magical," said Mead after the result was announced. "You have no idea. I'm so grateful!"

Original Kidz, IMD and Kaine have made it to the live final this Friday, August 29, joining Dance Illusion, Boyband and Bitter Harvest.
The six dance acts will now compete for a £250,000 prize.

Meanwhile, pregnant judge Kimberly Wyatt also performed on the show.
Before her performance, Wyatt said: "It's a landmark moment for me as a woman, as a soon to be mum, as a dancer.
"I've got an amazing doctor working with me who said I've been dancing my whole life so there's no reason I can't continue. Everything is safe. I'm the luckiest soon-to-be-mum in the world."

Got To Dance is about to kick off its finals week, so it's just as well we have a bunch of semi-finalists now, isn't it? The first team who'll be battling it out for a place in the final will be Ashley Banjo's contestants, who'll take to Earl's Court on Monday, August 25.
"This year's new format has meant that I am mentoring a contemporary group and even a couple of ballet dancers," Banjo said. "It has brought a whole new dynamic, but unlike the other judges I know how it feels - I have been in the exact same place as the contestants and had to work my way up with my dance group.
"It's nerve-wracking and a big responsibility being a mentor. There is so much talent and Got To Dance is one of those shows that's all about talent."
So who is on Ashley Banjo's team?...

Toronto (Reuters) - With her new drama "In Darkness" Agnieszka Holland has returned to her native Poland to produce a haunting portrait of the Holocaust that could net the veteran director another Oscar nod.
The film, which had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival this week, tells the true story of a group of Jews that hid for 14 months in the sewers beneath the then-Polish city of Lvov during World War II.
Shot in Polish and German, Holland said that while a film made in English would likely reach a wider audience, she wanted to make a Holocaust movie that was as faithful to the truth as possible.
"I felt that if I have to, if I want to, if I must do another movie which touches this theme, it has to be more realistic," she said. "I felt this story, for some reason,...

If you live in Tucson you are Far luckier than I. Firstly, James Zahn can’t drive to your home and torture you with images of Vicki from Small Wonder. Let me tell ya, that‘s a fuckin‘ nightmare unto itself. Secondly, the weather is a great deal better than my home in Miserable, Missouri (population 60k meth-heads and 1 large-mouthed asshole that writes about stuff), and third, you’re first in line for the sonic assault of Prong’s new tour. That’s right, Prong is back with a new album, and is going on the road for the ‘Worst of the Worst‘ tour. The first show is slated for May 9th at the Suicidal Metalfest in Tucson, with a follow up on the 10th in a local club whose name I have yet to find. Then, Tommy Victor and company are off to a twenty-five city tour in Europe.
