Decade in Review: 2001 Top Ten

17 November 2009 8:41 PM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

What follows is my original top ten list of 2001. We'll discuss each year of the decade over the next month or two (we already did 2000). I do this because I am curious about which films "stick" and which fade and why and maybe you are too? Best year of the decade I think. The top five films would all be valid #1 film choices in some years. New comments are in red.

Note: This list references films released in NYC in 2001, not year of production or year in which they first the hit festival circuit or whatnot.

Runners Up (in descending order): Sexy Beast, Ali, Series 7: The Contenders, The Others, Last Resort and Waking Life. I don't remember loving Ali that much... and more than The Others? I don't remember that at all. I mean Nicole Kidman was the shit Twice Over in 2001.

In my round up of the …

Updated: Eugenio Mira shooting baroque retro-futuristic thriller Agnosia

5 November 2009 2:26 PM, PST | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

Updated: We have added a production still and a concept piece which has been provided for us, both of which are after the break. We have also been informed that this is not a "retro-futuristic thriller" (although the synopsis sounds like it) and it's more in the vein of The Prestige or The Elephant Man.

Eugenio Mira (The Birthday) is at work on his second feature length film entitled Agnosia which stars Eduardo Noriega, Bárbara Goenaga, Felix Gomez, Lluis Homar and Martina Gedeck. Billed as a baroque, retro-futuristic thriller, it's about an optician who designs a massive deadly lens and is set in Spain in the late 19th century. With a screenplay written by Antonio Trashorras (The Devil's Backbone). Word is that shooting will start this month (if it's not already underway).

I'm trying to get more details, so stay tuned!

To boot, you can check out Mira's incredibly stylish …

Two Resident Evil Actors to Star in Spainish Horror Exorcismus

20 October 2009 11:52 PM, PDT | HugAZombie | See recent HugAZombie news »

Spain really is trying to become the next Japan, at least in terms of horror movie output, and helping shepherd the movement is studio Flimax, which produced [Rec] and [Rec] 2. Exorcismus is the company's English-language production that started shooting October 5 in and around Barcelona and has put together a horror fan-friendly cast with Hellraiser's Doug Bradley and Resident Evil actors Sophie Vavasseur (Resident Evil: Apocalypse) and Stephen Billington (Resident Evil).

Relative newcomer Manuel Carballo (Filmax's The Last of the Just) will direct the script by David Munoz (The Devil's Backbone).

The synopsis, according to Spanish horror site Aullidos, is roughly translated below. Real rough. We preferit through an online Spanish-to-English translator once, translate it back into Spanish, and then back into English for optimum results:

Exorcismus counts as Emma is fed above. It is satiated to study between company instead of going to the institute, is satiated to do of kangaroo of his small brother, …

21 September 2009 | shocktillyoudrop.com | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

Changes are being made in the Exorcismus director's chair. Last November, Filmax announced Luis de la Madrid ( The Nun ) was to helm the documentary-style exorcism chiller penned by The Devil's Backbone 's David Munoz. Instead, Manuel Carballo ( The Last of the Just ) is taking the reins. This is according to the IMDb (thanks to Aullidos for the tip). Synopsis: Fear is taking over the residents of the High Cross housing estate. Recently, ominous things have been inexplicably taking place...and there are rumors. The Hawkins are desperate, medical tests have ruled out any illness, and yet their 15 year old daughter Suzy is getting worse every day. Something is consuming her. Guillermo Del Toro Teams With Disney

13 September 2009 3:26 AM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Guillermo del Toro, not content with scaring a generation of adults with films like Pan's Labyrinth and The Devil's Backbone, is set to bring his unique brand of twisted magic to Disney, as the "creative force" behind a new Disney label called Disney Double Dare You.The idea is that the brand will create scary animated fare, rather than the traditional princesses and talking animals - although we're guessing that's Corpse Bride scary rather than Last House on the Left scary. The first film from the label is going to be Trollhunters, based on a Del Toro idea. The world's busiest filmmaker said that all the Disney Double Dare You projects would include a common trait (though he wouldn't say what that is) and told audiences at Disney's D23 event that he was inspired by a long-ago visit to Disneyland's Haunted Mansion, and the immersive, scary experience that that provided. …

Lights On for "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark!" Katie Holmes Set to Star in Supernatural Remake!

1 July 2009 7:50 AM, PDT | Manny the Movie Guy | See recent Manny the Movie Guy news »

Guy Pearce is in final talks to join Bailee Madison and Katie Holmes in the remake, "Don't Be Afriad of the Dark."

Miramax is producing the supernatural flick based on the 1973 ABC tele-movie.

Guillermo del Toro protege Troy Nixey is set to direct the creepy tale of a young girl who moves in with her father and his girlfriend, only to discover demonic creatures in the house! Tan dan dan...

Pearce will play the father and Madison will star as his daughter. Holmes? She'll be the girlfriend who supports Madison's demonic beliefs.

You know why I'm excited about this film? Because Del Toro co-wrote the script! And I adore his cinematic sense especially, his supernatural take (witness "Hellboy" and "Pan's Labyrinth" or "The Devil's Backbone!").

Plus, it's fun to see this tele-film get an update!

"Don't Be Afraid of the Dark" is set to begin production next month in Melbourne, …

Art of Horror: Entering the Grendel's Den...

20 June 2009 11:23 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

In the realms of horror and macabre art, several artists find it very difficult to evoke fear out of their viewers.  As noted on his website, artist D.E. Christman “…is an artist that simply wants to scare the hell out of you…”  and Christman certainly does so.  With his slimy paws in several different areas of art production, Christman runs the coveted design studio, Grendel’s Den.  As noted on Grendel’s Den, they are a design studio that offers web design and development, graphic and print design, logo and branding development, media packaging design, and custom art and illustration; all in the name of horror!

Created by horror mastermind, D.E. Christman, Grendel’s Den was developed over a decade ago, when Christman began his love for art. With beautiful imagery, some a combination of tangible objects and computer-generated imagery, Christman’s art is reminiscent of Cliver Barker’s nightmarish, …

Joe Moe: Horrorwood Babbles On: The Forrest J. Ackerman Tribute

16 March 2009 12:40 AM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

(Note: This story will be "stickied" at the top of our headlines for the day. Being able to host it is an honor beyond words.)

It was a Blood-Red-letter day for fandom as pros and fans alike gathered to bid a reluctant “Forry-well” to the late great genre-icon Forrest J. Ackerman! Hollywood’s historic Egyptian Theatre served as a temple for the filled-to-capacity ritual sponsored by the American Cinematheque, Profiles in History auction house and the Ackerman estate.

Guests began waiting on line at around 1:00Pm for the scheduled 3:00Pm reception. By 2:30 over 200 bodies had congregated at the doors of the theater. Inside, staff was scrambling. Pieces of Forry’s collection were being displayed (A first edition of Dracula signed by Bram Stoker and almost everyone who ever played the famous Vampire on screen, Bela Lugosi’s Dracula cape and Forry’s fave prop: the “Robotrix” from …

Sundance Journal 2009 Day 2: Alexis Dos Santos' Unmade Beds

17 January 2009 | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

- The Egyptian theatre on the main was the lieu for the world preem to Alexis Dos Santos' sophomore feature. Part of the world dramatic comp, Unmade Beds is a portrait of youth, coming-of-age pic poses its two featured vagabond characters in separate story-lines and mostly delves into the theme of abandonment and the squatter culture which seems to have left quite the impression on the Argentinean filmmaker.  Dos Santos' handheld, intimate framing of actors Deborah Francois and Fernando Tielve is a throwback to certain stylistic elements from the Nouvelle Vague of French cinema infused with a very broad soundtrack selection that tries in vain to pump emotional content to the context of duel searches for human contact. Francois (L'enfant) has her best moments in scenes where silence explores the back-story of the character, where as Tielve (The Devil's Backbone) has what initially appears to be a promising story-line …
