Get ready to witness cinema's most stomach-churning twist all over again: "Oldboy" is coming to television. The 2003 Park Chan-Wook masterpiece (which was based on a manga by Garon Tsuchiya) is going to be remade as an English-language TV show, /Film has learned, and Park will be directly involved in crafting this new version.
Park is partnering with Lionsgate Television to develop a series adaptation of the impressively f***ed-up story and will produce the show along with his frequent collaborator Syd Lim. "Lionsgate Television shares my creative vision for bringing 'Oldboy' into the world of television," Park said in a press release. "I look forward to working with a studio whose brand stands for bold, original, and risk-taking storytelling." Past Lionsgate Television productions range from "Mad Men" to "Party Down" to "Yellowjackets," and given the company's wide-ranging list of past streaming and network partners, it's still too soon...

Park Chan-wook is developing his acclaimed film Oldboy for the first time as an English-language series in partnership with Lionsgate Television. Park, who directed and co-wrote the original film, is set to produce the series alongside producing partner Syd Lim.
The 2003 feature is an adaptation of the Japanese manga of the same name written by Garon Tsuchiya. It follows Oh Dae-su (Choi Min-sik), a man taken off the streets and imprisoned for 15 years who is one day released and given 5 days to find his captor.
Oldboy is the second title in Park’s Vengeance trilogy, following Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (2002) and preceding Sympathy for Lady Vengeance (2005). It earned multiple accolades including the Grand Prix at Cannes in 2004, a first for a South Korean film. Spike Lee remade the film in 2013 with Josh Brolin portraying the lead character, Joe Doucett.

Exclusive: The director of Riz Ahmed and Rogan Productions’ Channel 4 series Defiance: Fighting the Far Right has opened up about how the show spotlights generational differences within the British Asian community.
Defiance, which launched earlier this week to positive reviews, shines a stark light on the violent struggles of the British Asian community in the late ‘70s and ‘80s, and is told over three hours of interviews and archival footage.
Satiyesh Manoharajah tells Deadline that the show co-produced by Oscar-nominated British Asian star Ahmed explores themes of conflict within the South Asian community, between the older generation who wanted to maintain a low profile and the younger ones who felt that staying quiet was going to get them nothing of significance. This, he adds, is particularly stark due to the fact that the the first British Asian Prime Minister was appointed two years ago.

Whilst we haven’t covered the original Dune: Imperium here at Nerdly, we did cover the very nice Dune: Imperium – Deluxe Upgrade Pack and I have played the base game a lot. Basic Dune: Imperium has become one of the most popular modern games of the moment, with copies available in almost every game group and a huge number of people fully invested in both the base game and the three major expansions we’ve already had for it. However, so much play tends to draw out problems, and Dune: Imperium has its fair share. Dune: Imperium – Uprising is a brand-new standalone expansion that seeks to iron out any issues for existing players whilst offering an optimised, streamlined experience for newcomers.
For someone not used to modern board games, Dune: Imperium – Uprising is definitely what I would describe as a fairly complex game. Players will each represent one of the...

Currently revelling in the success of recently-uploaded Don Lee-starring film “Badland Hunters” and already teasing the second season of “Squid Game,” Netflix has unveiled a major slate of Korean films and series for 2024.
In August last year, Netflix publicly committed to investing $2.5 billion on Korean content over the next four years. That reflected both Netflix’s position as the country’s leading streamer, with an estimated 6.5 million subscribers, and its adopted role as one of the biggest exporters of Korean film and TV content.
“We were able to make this [investment] decision because we have great confidence that the Korean creative industry will continue to tell great stories,” said the streamer’s co-chief Ted Sarandos at the time of the spending commitment.

It’s been 10 years since the release of Guillermo del Toro’s “Pacific Rim.” And thus, it’s been five years since the sequel, ‘Uprising,’ which sadly isn’t directed by del Toro. But it isn’t until now that we find out the real reason why the award-winning filmmaker skipped directing the sequel to what seemed like one of his true passion projects. Well, you see, it all came down to missing a deposit on sound stages.

You remember "Pacific Rim Uprising," don't you? The 2018 sequel at least had the good sense to continue telling stories in a world begging to become a franchise and also cast John Boyega in a much-deserved leading role, but still managed to squander its potential with a lackluster story, a bizarre and unflattering habit of setting all its major action sequences in broad daylight, and, most egregiously of all, the decision to move forward without director Guillermo del Toro's involvement. This has obviously been a sore spot for the acclaimed, monster-loving filmmaker, but we never quite got to the bottom of why things went down the way they did.
Until now, that is. "Pacific Rim" and its thrilling set pieces just turned 10 years old and, to mark the occasion, del Toro teamed up with Collider to host a special Q&a session after a recent screening of the original movie in glorious IMAX.

Although some of the most famous works about the Holocaust appear in other media — “The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich,” for example, among books and Steven Spielberg‘s “Schindler’s List” in films — television is the medium that has brought the horror of the Nazis’ murder of six million Jews to the most people around the world. The importance of shining a light on the evil plan behind the Holocaust may be even more crucial today, as the Nazi agenda of white supremacy has made an unfortunate return in these times, once again rising (and even flourishing) in countries around the world.
Even taking on a subject as horrifyingly specific as the Holocaust, television has responded by telling the story in many different ways — through epic miniseries, dramas about Jewish prisoners, adventures of both rescuers and rebels and even a look into the Nazi psyche itself (“Conspiracy”).

A “Mortal Kombat” sequel is in the works at Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema.
Jeremy Slater, best known for the Disney Plus Marvel series “Moon Knight,” has been tapped to write the screenplay. Warner Bros. and New Line had quietly been looking to develop other installments in its “Mortal Kombat” universe, but plans for a follow-up film had not been official until Slater had been hired to pen the script.
The first “Mortal Kombat,” a martial arts-inspired adaptation of the popular video game, opened in theaters and on HBO Max last April. Despite mixed reviews, the R-rated movie still managed to generate solid ticket sales at a time when most people were largely steering clear of their local cinema. It earned $42 million domestically and $83 million worldwide.
Simon McQuoid, who directed “Mortal Kombat,” previously hinted to Variety that he would be interested in expanding the movie into a gory action franchise.
Jeremy Slater, best known for the Disney Plus Marvel series “Moon Knight,” has been tapped to write the screenplay. “Small Axe” director Steve McQueen has set up his next project, the feature film “Blitz,” at New Regency.
McQueen’s production company Lammas Park will produce alongside Working Title Films. There are virtually no details available of the project, which will begin production in 2022.
“Blitz” marks a reunion for McQueen and New Regency, who previously partnered on Oscar-winning “12 Years a Slave” and “Widows.” The new film is based on an original idea from McQueen, who will also write and produce in addition to directing.
Yariv Milchan, chairman of New Regency, said: “Steve is an incredibly talented filmmaker and a remarkable storyteller. We are delighted to continue our partnership with him on this exciting new project.”
Calling the New Regency team “wonderful partners” over the years, McQueen added: “I’m thrilled to work with Arnon, Yariv, and Michael again and very excited to join forces with [Tim Bevan] and [Erin Fellner] at Working Title Films.

MangroveFor many, the entrance of Steve McQueen into television was expected—his mercurial career has encompassed video-art installations, music videos, shorts and award-winning feature films. Before the critical success of Small Axe (2020) and Uprising (2021), twin anthology series that navigate the lives and passions of London’s Caribbean and West Indian communities, McQueen had already directed the pilot episode of HBO’s TV series Codes of Conduct, and his fourth feature, Widows (2018), smartly transplanted Lynda La Plante’s 1980s mini-drama into present-day Chicago.McQueen is one of many working directors—David Fincher, Jane Campion, and Andrea Arnold, of recent years—whose careers have migrated from cinema to small-screen television. Switch between your streaming channels, and the volume of director-driven programs is extensive—and growing. In the past, the director-led format of television was far less common and expected, with the groundbreaking prestige series of Rainer Fassbinder, Krzysztof Kieślowski (Dekalog), and David Lynch...

Director Steve McQueen has followed up on “Small Axe,” last year’s narrative anthology series about West Indian immigrants in London, with another series about Black British history: “Uprising,” a three-part documentary series about three related events in 1981 — the New Cross house fire, Black People’s Day of Action and the Brixton riots.
The series, which he co-directed with James Rogan, is now streaming on Amazon Prime, along with two companion documentaries that McQueen executive produced: “Black Power: A British Story of Resistance” and “Subnormal: A British Scandal,” the latter about British education of Black children.
The first episode of “Uprising,” “Fire,” begins with interviews of people present at the party where the New Cross house fire broke out, a tragedy that killed 13 Black teenagers. While it almost feels related to the fictional house party in the “Small Axe” film “Lovers Rock,” McQueen says that they’re completely unrelated, besides...

Steve McQueen, the British filmmaker whose most recent project is documentary series “Uprising” after the anthology series “Small Axe,” talked to Variety about the memories he cherishes of Michael K. Williams, who died on Sept. 6. The actor played Robert in McQueen’s 2013 film “12 Years a Slave,” which won the Academy Award for best picture in 2014.
“Oh, my God, Michael,” McQueen said. “I remember we were doing re-shoots, so we were very tired and we’d been shooting for a long time. Michael came on set, and he lifted everybody. Because you’re shooting and tired and things are lagging, but when Michael came on set, he was so focused, so concentrated, that he gave energy to everybody. I’m not just saying it because he just passed. I remember that. His focus — we had to get to his standard. Like, ‘Let’s stop lying around. Let’s bring it up again!

"The Black community cannot just stand by and allow this to happen." Amazon has released an official US trailer for the BBC documentary series by Steve McQueen & James Rogan called Uprising. This first premiered in the UK in July, and arrives on Prime Video in the US + Canada this September. Uprising is a 3-part doc series made for the BBC by McQueen (fresh off of making the fantastic Small Axe anthology of films) and Rogan. The series is about the tragedy and aftermath of events in 1981 which it argues would go on to define race relations in the United Kingdom for a generation. There's three Uprising episodes: one about the New Cross house fire which took the lives of 13 black teenagers in January 1981; one about the day in March 1981, Black People's Day of Action, which saw more than 20,000 people join the first organized mass protest by black British people; one...

As with so many festivals, it’s easy to feel a little overawed when first glancing at the full program of films on offer at Sheffield DocFest (June 4-13).
Despite the challenges of programming during a pandemic, the Sheffield team has pulled together an impressive lineup of 78 features and 88 shorts in its films program.
Among the 55 world premieres are Oscar winner Steve McQueen’s 1981-set race relations series “Uprising,” “Leaving Neverland: Michael Jackson and Me” director Dan Reed’s latest “In the Shadow of 9/11,” Peabody Award winner Mark Cousins’ meditation on sight, “The Story of Looking,” and Nick Green’s biopic of the fugitive former CEO of Renault-Nissan “Carlos Ghosn: The Last Flight.”

Steve McQueen, the man who directed five, count 'em, five of last year's best films with his Small Axe series, is about to confound everybody fixated on old-fashioned definitions of Art all over again with a new three-part thingamajig for the BBC called Uprising. THR is calling it a "docuseries" and this one, on paper, does admittedly sound more like a proper old-fashioned series than the Small Axe anthology ended up seeming (to me). We'll wait and see how McQueen confounds our expectations, since he does always love to do that, and to stunning effect. And hey if awards voting bodies can't keep up with where and how the art is happening that's their fault, not the artists.
Uprising will focus in closer on the 1981 events that formed the backdrop of Axe's fourth chapter "Alex Wheatle" -- namely the New Cross Fire which killed 13 young people, and...

After the global success of “Small Axe,” the BBC and acclaimed British filmmaker Steve McQueen are teaming again for documentary series “Uprising.”
The three-part series will explore three seminal events of 1981 that changed race relations in the U.K. and defined them for a generation. In January 1981, a fire at a party in the London suburb of New Cross killed 13 Black teenagers. In March, more than 20,000 people joined Black People’s Day of Action, the first organized protest by Black Britons. And April was when the Brixton riots took place.
Some of these events formed the backdrop for the “Alex Wheatle” episode of “Small Axe.”
James Rogan, who directed the BBC documentary mini-series “Stephen: The Murder that Changed a Nation,” about an epochal racially-charged U.K. killing, will co-direct “Uprising” with McQueen. Rogan and McQueen previously co-executive produced BBC’s Black-themed documentaries “Black Power” and “Subnormal.”

Marvelous Marvin Hagler died Saturday, his wife confirmed today, on his Facebook fan page. The iconic middleweight boxer and actor was 66.
“Today unfortunately my beloved husband Marvelous Marvin passed away unexpectedly at his home here in New Hampshire,” wrote Kay G. Hagler. “Our family requests that you respect our privacy during this difficult time.”
The cause of the boxer’s death was not confirmed.

Palm Springs Intl. ShortFest has announced a slate of 332 films in its official selection that will be eligible for jury award consideration, including “I Lost My Mother’s Ashes,” starring Mandy Moore; Kevin Dunn in “Josiah”; and Maya Rudolph, Jay Ellis and Laroyce Hawkins in “Thirsty.”
ShortFest will screen a portion of the selected films beginning June 16 and will be available to stream on its website for free through June 22.
“We’re proud to share all the work filmmakers have put into making their films and all of the work our staff has put into making ShortFest happen,” said artistic director Lili Rodriguez. “No one ever imagines launching a film festival during a pandemic, let alone launching one during such politically charged and urgent times. We remain firm believers that movies are empathy machines and stay committed to sharing cinema from different parts of the world, from different and diverse perspectives.

The UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television revealed the winners for this year’s screenwriting showcase on June 8 via a virtual Zoom ceremony attended by nearly 70 Mfa screenwriting students, faculty, and staff.
During the event, host Cat Wilkins acknowledged the deaths of Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and George Floyd and encouraged support and allyship for the Black community. The attendees ordered in from Black-owned restaurants during the virtual ceremony and were surprised by special guests including Pose co-creator and UCLA Alum Steven Canals, Oscar-winning filmmaker John Ridley, and showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman.
“I know this is a really strange time culturally, and it may not feel like a time you want to celebrate, but you should absolutely take this opportunity to pat yourself on the back,” Canals said. “Stories matter. Stories are important. That is the way that we reflect our humanity…and heal the world.

Topps’ New Licensed Mars Attacks Card Set from SideKick Lab Funds on Kickstarterhttps://www.kickstarter.com/projects/sidekicklab/mars-attacks-uprising
Before the over-the-top mayhem and dark humor of Amazon’s The Boys, before the post-apocalyptic nightmare of The Walking Dead, before the sprawling space adventure of Avengers: Endgame, there was Mars Attacks! The original pulp sci-fi card set, released by Topps in 1962, influenced them all.
Now nearly six decades later, The Topps Company has licensed Mars Attacks to SideKick Lab, who will develop, produce, and publish a new series of Mars Attacks trading cards, which is currently crowdfunding on Kickstarter. This campaign was fully funded in just over an hour!
“SideKick was a critically important partner behind Topps’ earlier Kickstarter-funded Mars Attacks: Occupation, which was beloved by fans, and we are pleased to have them return to the series,” says Topps’ VP of Global Licensing Ira Friedman.
