Decade in Review: 2002 Top Ten

2 December 2009 7:58 PM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

As with 2000 and 2001, I'm reprinting my original top ten lists and commentary. If I've got something new to say, it'll be in red below.

Please note: This list was based on NYC release dates in the year 2002. Some movies are listed as different years at the IMDb based on when they were produced or released in their home country or in La or whatnot.

Undervalued: Morvern Callar, Roger Dodger, About a Boy, White Oleander, Panic Room and Kissing Jessica Stein Top 10 Runners Up: Chicago, Monsoon Wedding, Punch Drunk Love and Spirited Away I still am glad I championed most of these movies though I am sad that some of them aren't in the top ten... particularly Morvern, Monsoon and the Miyazaki. The MMMs. Though I'm not sure I'd know what to remove to make room for them.

10. 8 Women (François Ozon)

Alfonso Cuaron to Direct The Tourist Starring Johnny Depp

6 November 2009 2:16 PM, PST | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Although Y tu mamá también was Alfonso Cuaron's breakout film in terms of proving his talent and putting him on Hollywood's radar, it was Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and Children of Men that made him an instant favourite among fantasy and sci-fi fans. Of course, Children of Men was released back in 2006, and Cuaron hasn't really done much since then outside of producing. Now this week it looks like his next directorial gig may finally be falling into place, picking up the pieces of a potentially high-profile project that has gone through multiple changes to cast and crew. If all goes according to plan Cuaron will direct The Tourist, a remake of the 2005 French film Anthony Zimmer, about an American vacationer in France who is unwittingly used as a decoy for a French spy. Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck (The Lives of Others) had previously been attached, »

Alfonso Cuaron Might Direct The Tourist with Johnny Depp!

4 November 2009 6:27 PM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Just switch out a few key players, and it becomes an entirely different film. We've been reporting on The Tourist, the Hollywood remake of the 2005 French spy thriller Anthony Zimmer, for more than a year now. Originally Charlize Theron and Tom Cruise were attached to star, but both eventually dropped out. As of a few weeks ago, Angelina Jolie was attached to star along with Sam Worthington. However, there's been yet another change, as THR is reporting that Worthington is now off the project, being replaced by Johnny Depp. But best of all, they're saying Alfonso Cuaron (of Y Tu Mamá También) may end up directing. In October, we reported that Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, who directed the Oscar winning film The Lives of Others, was being courted by Spyglass Entertainment to direct The Tourist. Nikki Finke of Deadline Hollywood claims that the producers found him "difficult and demanding" and »

Foreign Film Oscar Submissions. The Story So Far

17 September 2009 5:34 PM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

In roughly one month's time Oscar's sharpest double edged sword falls. That would be the announcement of the official submission list for the Best Foreign Language Film competition. Why the double edge? On the one hand it's always a mouthwatering list of sixty-plus film titles from newbie directors and masters alike, starring actors from all over the globe and covering virtually every film genre. They're not all masterpieces but there's true gold in there. On the other hand, the majority of these possibly awesome titles will remain unavailable to all but the most dedicated and wealthy of cinephiles who can travel 'round the world chasing film festivals.

It's time for The Film Experience to dive in to the possibilities ahead. We've been bringing you the web's most comprehensive foreign chart for 9 years now.

Israel. Third Time Lucky?

Israel is an 8 time nominee in the foreign film race but they've never won. »

Criterion hatches 12 picture deal with IFC Films

26 August 2009 6:32 AM, PDT | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

Still wondering how the hell Criterion Collection acquired the recently announced A Christmas Tale and Gomorrah, two IFC Films releases from the past year. Word is that these two acclaimed pictures are just a tease of a twelve picture deal the two companies have joined forces to unleash to the masses. So that leaves ten more films for film fanatics to ponder over what else may be hiding in the wings. Two obvious bids it seems would be Che, which has been discussed throughout the interweb as an upcoming release from Criterion, and Steve McQueen’s Hunger a film chosen as part of the Criterion hosted cinema at All Tomorrow’s Parties festivities next month in New York. Leaving eight more films from the repertoire of IFC Films to find a new home at Criterion. Will the remaining films come from earlier in the film companies existence with such releases »

Rudo Y Cursi: Oscar Contender?

8 May 2009 8:01 AM, PDT | Hollyscoop.com | See recent HollyScoop news »

Is it too early to start chatting about the 2010 Academy Awards race? Never! Especially when it comes to Director Carlos Cuarón’s latest film Rudo Y Cursi. Rudo Y Cursi is a film “about brothers” who play soccer in Mexico, get discovered, and then put on rival teams. “It’s a wolf hitting against a sheep,” said director Carlos Cuarón (who co-wrote Oscar Nominated Y Tu Mamá También). “It’s a lot of fun.” Hollyscoop.com spoke exclusively with the film’s team during its Tribeca Film Festival premier as both media and fans swarmed lead actors Diego »

Interview with Gael García Bernal for "Rudo y Cursi"

7 May 2009 | Movie Jungle | See recent Movie Jungle news »

For Gael García Bernal, an actor in search of challenges, drama trumps looks.       The hope is that after shouting "Viva la Mexico!" across a crowded Main Street during the Sundance Film Festival actor Gael García Bernal, producers Alfonso Cuarón and Guillermo del Toro and director Carlos Cuarón, the creative entourage behind the Mexican soccer comedy “Rudo y Cursi,” would turn and greet the grinning journalist they have all met before.   The reality of deafening street noise means the sidewalk reunion never takes place. The brief "Have we met before?" conversation occurs later just after a festival screening in front of a capacity audience.   At a prior festival, during an unseasonably warm September afternoon for Toronto, Bernal - a native of Gudalajara, Mexico - sits surrounded by friends and colleagues in an upper-floor hotel bedroom.  He is friendly, low-key but quickly perks up once we started talking about his acting career, »

Interview: Writer/Director Carlos Cuarón – Rudo Y Cursi -- Talking about the world of soccer, the success of Mexican directors, and how I totally missed the point of his movie.

30 April 2009 | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Written by Matt Goldberg While it probably makes guys like Lou Dobbs and Tom Tancredo cry themselves to sleep at night, Mexican auteurs are making it big in America and worldwide. While it is debatable where their phenomenal success began, there's a strong argument to be made that it started with 2002's "Y Tu Mamá También" co-written by Carlos Cuarón and co-written and directed by his brother Alfonso Cuarón who has gone on to direct "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" and "Children of Men". Now Carlos Cuarón makes his feature-film directing debut with the funny and charming "Rudo y Cursi" which reunites "Y tu mamá" stars Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal as soccer-playing brothers who are winners on the pitch but losers at about everything else. I spoke with Cuarón about the message and theme of his film, the politics »

Sundance Journal 2009 Day 2: Carlos Cuaron's Rudo y Cursi

18 January 2009 | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

- Working with a long camera lense, I was able to take some quick pics on the red (more like brown) carpet (see below) before taking a seat for the international premiere to Carlos Cuarón's feature length feature debut at the Eccles. The first project out of the Cha Cha Cha prod co. (a collective tha includes producers/directors Alfonso and Guillermo del Toro), this got quickly picked up by Sony Pictures Classics just prior to the fest and almost one month after an amazing opening late last year in native Mexico. I think they made a sound foreign film investment, which will only prep us up for more Spanish language fair later this year with Pedro's next. Bernal and Diego Luna are a great pairing, and the film's screenplay is solid and benefits from a generous helping of laugh-out-loud moments via brotherly love and this endless rivalry. The »

Hump Day Hotties, Gael García Bernal & Diego Luna

15 January 2009 3:00 AM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

"Hump Day Hotties" is back (Just pretend this piece arrived yesterday. Go with it!)

Things have been quiet, at least in the Us, when it comes to everyone's favorite Mexican Gael García Bernal. In 2008 he gave an against-type performance in Blindness (my review) but the film didn't catch. 2009 should be a better year for Bernal fans. It's already a great year for Bernal himself. He just became a father. His girlfriend, actress Dolores Fonzi (pictured left) gave birth to a baby boy last Thursday who they named Lazaro [src]

Congratulations to the couple!

We don't generally cover birth notices at The Film Experience so we're here to talk about another couple. The reason we're thinking of Bernal this morning (does one need a reason?) is that Sony Pictures Classics just picked up distribution rights to Rudo Y Cursi which is the first onscreen reunion of the Y Tu Mamá También boys. »
