The Notable Films of 2010: Part Three

17 December 2009 11:42 PM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Dinner for Schmucks

Opens: July 23rd 2010

Cast: Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, Zach Galifianakis, Bruce Greenwood, David Walliams

Director: Jay Roach

Summary: A renowned publisher encourages his friends to invite the most pathetic guests possible for their weekly dinner party. Just as they find the most pathetic man yet, the host is injured and ends up trapped with the man all night long.

Analysis: A remake of director Francis Veber's 1998 César award-winning "Le Diner des cons", 'Schmucks' is one of the highest profile comedies of next year with one of the strongest casts for the genre in recent memory. It also marks the return of "Austin Powers" and "Meet the Parents" helmer Jay Roach who has produced several films in recent years but hasn't directed since 2004's "Meet the Fockers".

The question now lies not in the performers or director but the material itself and whether a Gallic comedy can »

Case 39

Opens: January 1st 2010

Cast: Renée Zellweger, Jodelle Ferland, Ian McShane, Bradley Cooper, Kerry O'Malley

Director: Christian Alvart

Summary: A family services social worker thinks she has seen it all until she meets her newest, most mysterious case - a troubled 10-year old girl whose parents try to kill her. The social worker decides to take her in herself until the right foster family comes along.

Analysis: Despite the presence of promising German director Christian Alvart ("Pandorum"), 'Case' has sat on a shelf since late 2006 and is finally being quietly shuffled out this year for one very good reason - it stinks. Having opened in Australia a few months back, reviewers utterly savaged the film as both incredibly dumb and utterly ludicrous. Lead star Renee Zellweger also scored personal criticism to a level rarely seen in film reviews outside of comments about Nicole Kidman's 'more alien than the »

First Trailer For Remember Me

20 November 2009 2:48 AM, PST | Screenrush | See recent Screenrush news »

RPattz mania is going to get even more out of control after the release this week of New Moon, the next installment in the Twilight Saga, so it's lucky that the Twi-hard fans will have another of his projects to focus their attentions on while waiting for the third installment. Robert Pattinson can next be seen starring in Remember Me, a romantic drama that bears similarities to the vampire saga in that he plays a tortured soul who is rescued by love.

Pattinson plays Tyler, a rebellious guy who has major issues with his father (Pierce Brosnan) ever since they were separated by a family tragedy. When he meets Ally (Emilie de Ravin) through an unusual twist of fate, they embark on a romance that finally gives meaning to his life, but eventually hidden secrets threaten to tear them apart.

Remember Me also stars the ever brilliant Chris Cooper (Adaptation »

Trailer for Robert Pattinson’s Remember Me

19 November 2009 11:03 PM, PST | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

It’s after midnight here in the Central Time Zone, which means hordes of eager fans are packed into sold out theaters for the opening of The Twilight Saga: New Moon.  Some, if not all, will be showing a trailer for the other Summit Entertainment and Robert Pattinson picture show titled Remember Me.

The romantic drama (previously known as Memoirs) centers on a new couple (Pattinson and “Lost” actress Emilie de Ravin) whose relationship is tested by family tragedy.  You’ll be happy to know she also bites her lip when she’s attracted.  The film also stars Pierce Brosnan and Chris Cooper.

The trailer for New Moon reached 10.6 million views in its first week online, a new record.  Given the loyal following of Pattinson fans, I wouldn’t be surprised by another massive number, though perhaps not the record-shattering totals of the vampire sequel.

Extraordinary Measures Trailer Starring Harrison Ford and Brendan Fraser

12 November 2009 9:13 AM, PST | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Harrison Ford is, and always will be, the man. Unfortunately, that doesn't change the fact that his career has been sputtering for some time now (Indiana Jones notwithstanding), and with his latest film Extraordinary Measures, it seems unlikely that he is going to reclaim the audience that has been slowly slipping away from him. The movie co-stars Brendan Fraser, and while I might have been interested if this was a buddy comedy (ha!), instead we have a serious drama about a father looking for someone to help him cure his children of a rare genetic disorder. Just look at that picture... even these guys can't believe they ended up in this movie. Extraordinary Measures is based on the true story of John Crowley as documented in the book The Cure: How a Father Raised $100 Million – And Bucked the Medical Establishment – In a Quest to Save His Children. The book was »

Nicholas Cage: Gangster, Pimp, or Sorcerer?

11 November 2009 1:05 AM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

I’ll get to Nicholas Cage in a moment, but my first thought was about Alfred Molina. I admit that there are far too many of Molina’s movies for me to have seen, but every time I watch one of his films, it always seems as if he plays some kind of bad guy or adversary (Chocolat, Spider-Man 2, Raiders of the Lost Ark). He can also play a very nice, pacified guy – but is that the act? Would I want to meet him in a dark alley? I don’t know, but in The Sorcerer’s Apprentice he plays a very sinister fellow, and only Nicholas Cage, as the character of Balthazar Blake, can stop him. Jay Baruchel plays Blake’s apprentice, Dave Stutler, an average guy who is recruited based on his hidden potential as a sorcerer. The film is based on the poem by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, »

400 Screens, 400 Blows - 'Rum' Diary

25 October 2009 7:03 AM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Director Claire Denis -- who was born in France but raised in colonial Africa -- enjoyed a measure of art-house buzz when she leapt onto the scene in 1989 with her film Chocolat (not to be confused with the awful 2000 Johnny Depp/Juliette Binoche movie of the same name). Siskel & Ebert praised it and Denis on their show at the time. In 2000, her film Beau Travail topped the Film Comment critics' poll of the best films of the year. But in-between, she couldn't catch a break. She has a tendency to make "mood pieces" rather than plot-driven films; these tend to cause people to think, thus making them very uncomfortable. Some of her movies couldn't get distribution and remain difficult to see. Others received only the tiniest distribution and even most critics didn't notice them. Such is the case with her wonderful new 35 Shots of Rum (2 screens), which is one of the year's best films. »

Angelina Jolie is reportedly teaming up with Swedish director Lasse Hallström for the spy thriller, The Tourist. Jolie, 34, was photographed leaving the Sony Studios Building in Culver City, Calif., Oct. 15, where she reportedly inked a deal to star as an Interpol agent in The Tourist. Charlize Theron, 34, was previously attached to the project but recently dropped out. The Stockholm-born Hallström, 63, has been widely praised for his work in My Life as a Dog (1985), Chocolat (2000) and in 1999 was nominated for an Academy Award for The Cider House Rules. The Tourist is a remake of a 2005 French thriller Anthony Zimmer (which starred Sophie Marceau). First Image and Featurette from Extraordinary Measures Starring Harrison Ford, Brendan Fraser and Keri Russell

8 October 2009 3:15 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

CBS Films has sent over the first image and a first look featurette from director Tom Vaughan’s (”Starter for 10,” “What Happens in Vegas”) “Extraordinary Measures”. The film stars Harrison Ford, Brendan Fraser and Keri Russell and it’s inspired by the true story of John Crowley, a man who defied conventional wisdom and great odds, and risked his family’s future to pursue a cure for his children’s life threatening disease. While the featurette is mostly the real John Crowley talking about his story, at the end Harrison Ford and Brendan Fraser say a few words. While this kind of movie might not appeal to all of you, with the cast involved, I thought it was worth sharing. I’m hoping with Tom Vaughan directing it’ll be more than a movie of the week. Take a look at the image and featurette after the jump. “Extraordinary Measures »

Tiff Picks 09: Claire Denis' White Material

Buzz: Making this two in two years, (Cinema Guild is releasing 35 Shots of Rum in Sept.), for those keeping tabs on Denis' filmography, this is a return to sources for the helmer. She made her seminal film debut Chocolat (the 1988 film folks, not the overrated Lasse Hallström drama rom) and for those who know her own history, Africa was a part of her childhood. This also counts as a reunion with De Bankolé. Gist: Scripted by novelist Marie Ndiaye, in an unnamed African country torn by rebellion, Maria, an indomitable white woman, refuses to abandon her coffee crops, or to acknowledge the danger to which she is exposing her family. For Maria, to leave would be to surrender... André - her ex-husband and father of their son - is frightened by her stubborn pride. »

tMF Oscarwatch: Best Actress Losers - Ellen Burstyn ( Requiem for a Dream)

11 August 2009 12:09 AM, PDT | The Movie Fanatic | See recent The Movie Fanatic news »

If there is one particular actress that filmmaker Darren Oronofsky likes to cast, then it has to be Ellen Burstyn. In The Fountain, the director himself wrote into the script a role for the acclaimed actress. In Requiem for a Dream, Burstyn was nominated for a Best Actress award, and it was very unfortunate she did not win- her performance is way up there with the greats.

In the movie, Burstyn portrays Sara Goldfarb, an elderly widow who became addicted with weight-loss amphetamine pills, was hospitalized against her will, undergoes painful electro-convulsive therapy, and later on was confined at a mental asylum. For her performance, she won the Indie Spirit Award for Best Lead Female and more than 8 major critics' association awards for Best Actress. She also received nominations for Best Actress from the Screen Actors Guild, Golden Globes and the Oscars.
