Discovery boss David Zaslav said Monday that he’s in no rush to bring all his talent back into the studio, and it has all to do with the success story of none other than Steve Irwin and his show “The Crocodile Hunter.”
Speaking on the MoffettNathanson Media and Communications Summit Monday, Zaslav said he learned from watching “The Crocodile Hunter” that a show didn’t need to be slickly produced in order to get huge ratings.
“I had this experience when I was at NBC. We had bought National Geographic, and it had incredibly beautifully shot, 12 cameras, the voice of God, you got to see some animal that no one would ever get to see on Earth,” Zaslav said. “And then all of a sudden, (Steve) Irwin comes on Animal Planet and starts opening up the mouths of crocodiles, does very unpredictable [things], jumps into the swamp — and it’s getting five-times the rating.

It's been 12 years since Bindi Irwin's father, Steve, died, but she still holds his legacy near and dear to her heart. Steve - who gained worldwide stardom for his wildlife television show The Crocodile Hunter - passed away on Sept. 4, 2006 when he was attacked by a stingray while filming for a new movie, Ocean's Deadliest.
Although the accident happened over a decade ago when Bindi was just 8 years old, she still clearly recalls the aftermath. "I remember people coming up to me and saying, 'I'm sorry for your loss, sweetheart. Time heals all wounds.' But that's just not true," Bindi recently told People. "It's like losing a part of your heart, and when you've lost that, you never get it back."
Now, Bindi, 20, her brother Robert, 15, and her mother Terri, 54, are making sure they uphold Steve's mission to create a connection between humans and wildlife. They're also continuing...

Steve Irwin, The Crocodile Hunter, is well known around the world for his fierce love and respect for animals, his conservation efforts and the enthusiastic presence he showed on TV.
You can probably hear him right now saying, "Crikey, isn't she a beaut?!," as he held a venomous snake by the tail or approached a hungry crocodile by the water.
Sure, Steve did some crazy things, approaching dangerous wildlife nobody would go near on purpose.
But his purpose was not to show off what he could accomplish with wild animals or how far he could push his luck. The reason he interacted the way he did with wild animals was to educate and to show people how these animals behave in the wild.
Armed with that knowledge, he dreamed that people could live peacefully alongside animals. A dream his family shares.

The Irwin Family – Terri, Bindi and Robert – will return to Animal Planet in an all-new series on October 28.
Last year at Mipcom, Discovery Communications President and CEO David Zaslav said the company would work with the Irwins to develop and produce new projects that will air across the network’s platforms. The Irwin family will also serve as global ambassadors for Discovery Communications.
The late Steve Irwin helped create a distinctive new style of wildlife documentary, and The Crocodile Hunter featured both Steve and wife Terri as co-hosts, along with the animals of Far North Queensland. The series was a worldwide hit, airing on Animal Planet from 1996 through 2007, and also featured Terri and Steve’s children, Bindi and Robert.
Irwin died in 2006 after being pierced in the chest by a stingray barb while filming an underwater documentary.
Terri Irwin has become a passionate wildlife spokesperson and conservation icon around the world.

Few people appear as alive in death as in life, but “Crocodile Hunter” Steve Irwin, who passed away in 2006 but will receive his star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame April 26, remains such a vivid part of the legacy that has been carried on by his family that it is sometimes difficult to comprehend why those who knew him are speaking in past tense.
His omnipresence may be due to his image still appearing on all material associated with Australia Zoo, the wildlife park he ran with wife Terri in Brisbane, Australia. It might be because clips of Irwin discussing passing on the baton for his life’s work to his children open the trailer for the upcoming Irwin family show that will premiere on Animal Planet later this fall. But even those who were closest to him, his two children — Bindi and Robert — agree that their father’s presence still lingers.
