Case 39
Opens: January 1st 2010
Cast: Renée Zellweger, Jodelle Ferland, Ian McShane, Bradley Cooper, Kerry O'Malley
Director: Christian Alvart
Summary: A family services social worker thinks she has seen it all until she meets her newest, most mysterious case - a troubled 10-year old girl whose parents try to kill her. The social worker decides to take her in herself until the right foster family comes along.
Analysis: Despite the presence of promising German director Christian Alvart ("Pandorum"), 'Case' has sat on a shelf since late 2006 and is finally being quietly shuffled out this year for one very good reason - it stinks. Having opened in Australia a few months back, reviewers utterly savaged the film as both incredibly dumb and utterly ludicrous. Lead star Renee Zellweger also scored personal criticism to a level rarely seen in film reviews outside of comments about Nicole Kidman's 'more alien than the

Movie Geek Rage: Death At A Funeral Remake

One of my favorite comedies of the past five years was Frank Oz’s Death At A Funeral. It’s a tremendously funny film with an amazing cast and a lot of scenes that stuck with me long after I saw it and passed it on to friends. Yes that’s right, I have purchased this movie more than once for myself and ended up giving it to a friend because I know they’ll love it, and they always do.
Frank Oz is a very good director. Sure he’s a master puppeteer and is of course the legendary voice of Yoda, but he’s also a very good director and has made some really good films over the years like The Score, What About Bob, The Indian In The Cupboard, and The Stepford Wives. There are only a few missteps in his directing career and some of his

Alexandre Desplat talks 'The Twilight Saga: New Moon' score

Yesterday, Alexandre Desplat's The Twilight Saga: New Moon: The Score was released.
Desplat, an award-winning composer, took on the project, it seems, at the behest of Chris Weitz's desire to make the score a little differently than Carter Burwell did with Catherine Hardwicke in Twilight.
In a recent interview with IFMagazine, Desplat revealed the how's and why's on how he approached making the album.
I love to do research on all the movies I score. I'm like an "actor's studio" kind of composer, especially because I enjoyed reading about how much Robert De Niro and Marlon Brando would prepare for their roles. But to be honest, in the case of New Moon, I did no research. I love the music that Carter Burwell does for the Coen Brothers. He's a fabulous composer. But I didn't want to go there with his Twilight score, especially because of Carter

Trailer - De Niro, Norton, Jovovich in 'Stone'

This trailer isn't Red Banded, but it should be for the dialogue. I mean, I don't care either way, but if you've got this one going at work, there are some objectionable words bound to come through your speakers. You've been warned.
The movie is Stone, starring Robert De Niro and Edward Norton. There are actually two previous collaborations here to take notice of. The first, of course, is De Niro and Norton in The Score and the second is Norton's recent work with Stone director John Curran in The Painted Veil. Bobby D plays a parole officer who is seduced into freeing a convicted arsonist (Norton) after having an affair with the prisoner's wife. That femme fatale role might open some new doors for Milla Jovovich, who looks appropriately dangerous here.
The movie doesn't open until sometime in 2010, but given the players involved, we thought you might have some interest in it.

Robert De Niro-Starring 'Stone' Gets Promo Trailer

Rope of Silicon has got a hold of a promo trailer for psychological thriller "Stone" and made it available for viewing pleasure. A little more than two minutes long, this not-safe-for-work sneak peek exposes the complex relationship among the three major characters starred by Edward Norton, Milla Jovovich and Robert De Niro.
In this crime drama movie, Norton takes on the role of a ruthless convict who is desperately trying to gain parole. A convicted arsonist, he enlists the help of his beautiful wife, carried out by Jovovich, to manipulate his correction officer, portrayed by De Niro, and entrap the lawman in a series of deadly psychological games.
Scheduled to be released in U.S. theaters sometime in 2010, "Stone" comes from the director of "The Painted Veil", John Curran. It is adapted from Curran's original play by scribe Angus MacLachlan. The movie will be Norton and De Niro's second project together.

Trailer for DeNiro/Norton/Jovovich Potboiler Stone Provides No Easy Answers

Here's what we know about Stone: It's a psychological crime thriller set in a prison that re-teams The Score's Robert DeNiro and Edward Norton, only with Milla Jovovich now added to the mix, making her the de facto Marlon Brando (only more butch). Norton plays cornrowed prisoner "Stomp," DeNiro's the ... jaded parole officer? ... and Jovovich is Stomp's beautiful wife, sent by her husband to seduce DeNiro.
Still, we're left with more questions than answers.

Steven Soderbergh to Direct Knockout Starring Gina Carano aka American Gladiator Crush

A few months ago, Steven Soderbergh was getting ready to shoot Moneyball with Brad Pitt when the movie fell apart at the very last minute [1]. Although there have since been reports [2] that Aaron Sorkin would step in to rewrite the script and keep the project alive, Soderbergh isn't dwelling on it. He has already regrouped and moved on to his next flick: an espionage-themed action-thriller called Knockout.
Soderbergh is partnering with Relativity Media for the film, and in a somewhat unorthodox deal, he will waive his upfront salary in order to retain part ownership of the film. Clearly the movie is being set up to keep the budget low, but it sounds like it will have a lot more mainstream potential than some of his experimental films. The story, which is being written by Lem Dobbs (The Limey, The Score), is said to be "in the vein of The Bourne Identity

Between its September 15th DVD release date and FEARnet running the unaired episodes, there are plenty of ways to dig on what you didn't see while "Fear Itself" was on TV. For those of you without cable who are curious for a taste, we've got an exclusive clip and stills for you from an episode called "Chance".
"Chance" is directed by John Dahl (You Kill Me, The Last Seduction) and written by Lem Dobbs (The Score) and Rick Dahl (Red Rock West). In the vein of such classic doppelganger stories as Jekyll & Hyde and Poe's William Wilson, the episode explores a dreadful, classic battle that ensues when a man, played by Ethan Embry (Brotherhood, Sweet Home Alabama), is confronted by his evil self. Also starring are Christine Chatelain (“Smallville”) and Vondie Curtis-Hall (“ER,” Soul Food). Premieres on FEARnet: 9/6 -- Ends 9/16

Bouncing back from Moneyball, Steven Soderbergh will next direct the spy-thriller film Knockout. Similar to Bubble and The Girlfriend Experience, Soderbergh has gone outside the traditional Hollywood circuit for casting.

In Knockout Carano will play a girl from the wrong side of the tracks who is given a second chance to use her skills for constructive purposes. Soderbergh will surround Carano will name actors in supporting roles. Lem Dobbs, whose credits include Dark City, The Score and the Soderbergh-directed The Limey, penned the screenplay.

Director Steven Soderbergh (Ocean's Eleven, Traffic) has committed to next direct "Knockout," a spy thriller that will mark the screen starring debut of Gina Carano, the mixed martial arts circuit fighter who was also Crush on "American Gladiators." Scripted by Lem Dobbs (Dark City, The Score), "Knockout" stars Carano as a girl from the wrong side of the tracks who is given a second chance to use her skills for constructive purposes. Soderbergh considers the film as a flat out action film in the James Bond mold, and will shoot in locations around the world that include Ireland, Turkey and the Us. Soderbergh will surround Carano with name actors in supporting roles and will begin shooting the film in January. "Fear Itself" should be pretty fresh in your minds considering it's hitting DVD soon with some very bitchin' artwork. The short-lived show was like the unofficial third season of "Masters of Horror". For various reasons it was pulled before it could run its final five episodes. FEARnet is out to fix all that.
Starting on September 2nd the final five will begin being aired. Below you'll find a synopsis of each episode and when you can tune in to see them.
"Something With Bite," directed by Ernest Dickerson (NBC’s "Heroes"), is a reinvention of the classic werewolf story from writer Max Landis ("Masters of Horror"), the son of John Landis ("An American Werewolf in London"). When a veterinarian (Wendell Pierce, “The Wire”) is bitten by a large, strange animal brought into his clinic, he begins to see the world and his stale life differently. Filming is due to start on “Stone” today in Michigan, and according to ScreenDaily, Nu Image is busy shopping the film to prospective buyers in Cannes at this very moment.
Jovovich has been cast to play the wife of a convicted arsonist (Norton) who is deployed in a psychological game of cat-and-mouse with his parole officer, played by De Niro. This will be the second time that Norton and De Niro have teamed up for a game of cat and mouse on screen - they first did so in 2001’s underrated heist thriller “The Score” which also featured Marlon Brando in one of his last on screen roles.
“The Painted Veil” director John Curran will helm the film which has a script from Angus MacLachlan (”Junebug”) adapted from his original play.

Last week I wrote about the cast for the psychological thriller Stone with some trepidation, remembering that the last dream-team pairing of Edward Norton and Robert De Niro resulted in The Score. I'm hoping for something less disappointing this time around, and hopefully Milla Jovovich will be around to help me out.
She's signed on to play the wife of Norton's character, a convicted arsonist who uses her in a psychological game with his parole officer, played by De Niro. According to Screen Daily, the film starts shooting tomorrow, and NuImage has already started to try selling the rights at Cannes.

The film is based on a play by Angus MacLachlan. The newly-formed Mimran Schur Pictures is behind the film, which is their first venture as a new company. John Curran is on board to direct.

The last time that Edward Norton and Robert De Niro were in the same movie, it was Frank Oz's The Score which proved that both actors not only have major chops, but that they have a lot of chemistry. The last time Edward Norton was in a movie directed by John Curran, it was The Painted Veil which proved that Norton knows how to row a boat while being cheated on by Naomi Watts. Now, all of that chemistry and boat-rowing is going to come together when Curran directs both stars in his psychological thriller Stone.
Per Variety, De Niro plays a corrections officer that is seduced by Norton's character's wife (does every woman cheat on him?).
Not only is it a pretty great grouping of talent, the script was written by Angus MacLachlan, the mind behind the script for Junebug.
So not a ton of details just yet, but

Fun fact: the first R-rated movie I went to see after I turned 17, and proudly presented my driver's license when buying a ticket, was The Score. I was so excited to see the great cast-- Robert De Niro! Edward Norton! Marlon Brando!-- and some exciting crime hijinks. Of course, that movie really wasn't any good, and was perhaps my first introduction as a budding movie nerd to the fact that a good cast really never guarantees a good movie.
But now De Niro and Norton have a chance to make it up to me, having signed on together to star in Stone, a psychological drama starring De Niro as a correctional officer who is seduced by the wife of Norton's character, a convicted arsonist. Variety reports that John Curran, who most recently made The Painted Veil, will be directing the script by Junebug writer Angus MacLachlan.
