Ethan Hawke goes back behind the camera for Wildcat, and here are details of his new film – plus a trailer.
Ethan Hawke is better known as an actor than a director, with a prolific career that has included many collaborations with Richard Linklater – the sublime Before trilogy, Tape, The Newton Boys and Boyhood stand tall. Plus, films as diverse as Dead Poet’s Society, Training Day, The Purge, Predestination and Lord Of War – the sequel to the latter is currently in development, with writer and director Andrew Niccol and star Nicholas Cage on board. It has not been confirmed if Hawke will appear.
However, he has also steadily built up an impressive career behind the camera. Besides co-writing the last two Before films with Linklater and Julie Delpy, he has directed several documentaries and three feature films – Chelsea Walls in 1999, The Hottest State, adapted from his own novel in 2006, and...

Some indie stalwarts have been around for so long; you’re kind of surprised when you realize they haven’t worked with another indie veteran. Such is kind of the case with actor Ethan Hawke and indie filmmaker Abel Ferrara. Yes, Hawke showed up in Ferrara’s 2008 documentary “Chelsea Hotel,” interviewed about staying in the famous hotel. Still, he’d actually never starred or appeared in any of Ferrara’s many narrative feature-length films, an oddity considering the same paths they often traveled.

Karlovy Vary Intl. Film Festival, the leading cinema event in Central and Eastern Europe, will honor American actor, director, and writer Ethan Hawke, who will receive the Festival President’s Award at its 55th edition, taking place Aug. 20-28. The award is given to actors, directors, and producers who have “contributed in a fundamental way to the development of contemporary world cinema.”
“We are thrilled to welcome to Karlovy Vary an artist we’ve been admiring for a long time. In 2018, Kviff paid tribute to the Austin Film Society and it is exciting to extend our appreciation of this renowned organization’s work by honoring an actor and director who is so closely connected to the Texas independent film scene,” said artistic director Karel Och and executive director Krystof Mucha.
Hawke will personally introduce Paul Schrader’s thriller “First Reformed,” in which he portrays a parish pastor experiencing a crisis of faith.

Anna B Savage keeps writing about birds, but she’s not sure why. Her debut album, A Common Turn, released in January, is full of them: swallows, corncrakes, doves, and in one punny instance, a song about terns.
“I’m still trying to work this one out,” she says. “When I was writing the album, and I was really struggling with it — like pulling teeth — I had a dream where a version of me stood in front of me and was like, ‘You’ve got half an album, and there...

Ethan Hawke is a notorious multi-tasker. He writes articles, books, and scripts — both “Before Sunset” and “Before Midnight” (with Julie Delpy and Richard Linklater) were nominated for Adapted Screenplay Oscars. He’s a gifted theater director (“A Lie of the Mind”), musician, and songwriter.
His day job has yielded a couple of Supporting Actor Oscar nominations (Antoine Fuqua’s “Training Day” and Linklater’s “Boyhood”). He can do everything from action westerns (“The Magnificent Seven” and the upcoming “The Kid”) to heist movies (Robert Budreau’s upcoming “Stockholm”) and sincere romance. And he’s having a good year: He’s in the running for a Best Actor nod for his performance as an angst-ridden priest in the Paul Schrader drama “First Reformed.”
Like fellow multi-taskers Mark Duplass, David Lowery, Amy Seimetz and Jeff Bridges, Hawke feeds his creative mojo with rich nutrients. That’s why, at age 47, he’s already...

Sundance Selects has acquired U.S. rights to the music biopic “Blaze,” co-written, produced, and directed by Ethan Hawke.
The film held its world premiere at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, where newcomer Ben Dickey won the Special Jury Award for Achievement in Acting for his portrayal of Blaze Foley. “Blaze” is inspired by the life of Foley, the unsung songwriting legend of the Texas outlaw music movement that spawned the likes of Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson. “Blaze” explores his love affair with Sybil Rosen; his final performance in a near-empty honky-tonk; his last, dark night on earth; and the impact that his songs and his death had on his fans, friends, and foes.
Rosen co-wrote the film with Hawke based on her memoir “Living in the Woods in a Tree: Remembering Blaze Foley.” Jake Seal, John Sloss, and Ryan Hawke produced alongside Hawke.

This year’s Cannes Film Festival has announced their pick for President of their Un Certain Regard jury — Cannes regular and American icon, actress Uma Thurman.
Per an official statement from the festival, “In a career spanning more than 20 years, the American actress has made some daring choices and enjoyed taking risks. She made her debut aged 17, in Stephen Frears’ ‘Dangerous Liaisons’ and in Terry Gilliam’s ‘The Adventures of Baron Munchausen.’ She became Quentin Tarantino’s muse, playing in ‘Pulp Fiction’ (Palme d’or winner, 1994) and in ‘Kill Bill’ (volumes 1 & 2), both presented at the Festival de Cannes. Since then, Uma Thurman has worked with many directors, including Andrew Niccol (‘Gattaca’); Woody Allen (‘Sweet and Lowdown’); Roland Joffé (‘Vatel’) and Ethan Hawke (‘Chelsea Walls’). She recently joined the cast of Lars von Trier’s new project, ‘The House that Jack Built,’ alongside Matt Dillon and Bruno Ganz.”

Co-written, produced and directed by Hawke, the film is based on Sybil Rosen’s memoir ‘Living in the Woods in a Tree.’ It follows the life of the unsung songwriting legend of the Texas Outlaw Music movement that spawned the likes of Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson. Suffer the First Vision: Goddard’s Debut Anchored in Episode of Literary Distress
Doomed Welsh poet Dylan Thomas gets a contemporary biopic treatment in Set Fire to the Stars, taking its name from the last line of his poem “Love in the Asylum.” The film marks the feature debut of British television alum Andy Goddard (“Torchwood,” “Downton Abbey”) and is presented in striking black and white, giving the visual attributes a dramatic edge over the familiar succession of beats often evidenced in these portraits of mad artists. Told through the perspective of poet and literary critic John Brinnin, the man responsible for bringing Thomas to the Us for the first time, the treatment is based partially on his highly criticized account, Dylan Thomas in America. Goddard and co-writer Celyn Jones (who stars as Thomas) don’t appear to take many liberties and/or risks, despite some slight implications concerning Brinnin’s latent desires.

This month, as we move deeper into Oscar-bait season, let’s take a moment to recognize the unexpected rebirth of Ethan Hawke, a solid Best Supporting Actor nominee possibility for his stirring performance in Boyhood. His upcoming documentary-directing debut, Seymour, about an elderly piano virtuoso, has already drawn positive notices. And his new film, Good Kill, was just picked up for wide distribution. It’s been a good year. This is quite a turn for Hawke. Remember, there was Uma Thurman, novels, the independent and action films he starred in, the screen adaptation of his novel The Hottest State, directing Chelsea Walls, the literary-prize committees, the Russian aristos he played on stage (Ivanov). Throughout, an aura of the mid-1990s always trailed Hawke, like a spritz of Ck One or a gulp of Zima. In every historical play he performed in (even Tom Stoppard’s Coast of Utopia), his entrance...

The New York Film Festival begins this Friday and Glenn continues our pre-fest coverage by looking at 'Seymour: An Introduction'.
It’s curious that Ethan Hawke has appeared on screen this year with Richard Linklater’s Boyhood and now returns behind the camera (after Chelsea Walls and The Hottest State) to direct Seymour: An Introduction. Curious because both films get their life-source from demographics at opposite ends of the age spectrum that are both treated somewhat like lepers of cinema. Teenage boys in Boyhood and kindly old senior citizens aren’t usually treated with such respect and humility as these two Hawke projects. I have not seen Hawke's two previous directorial efforts, but this first foray into documentary is a nice step for this Hollywood stay who has clearly wrestled with being an artist in an industry that doesn't necessary encourage it.

This world is indeed a dangerous place and according to Tiff Doc programmer Thom Powers’ it might just be the docu filmmakers and subjects who are truly the “rebels, resisters and risk-takers” of the festival. While there might be a couple of more docu items in store along with a look back at Michael Moore’s Roger & Me, both Toronto, and Telluride auds will be in for treats with the Cannes invited Gabe Polsky’s Red Army and Venice Film Festival competing The Look of Silence (see pic above) from Joshua Oppenheimer (which is easily our most anticipated doc of the year) and Robert Kenner’s Merchants of Doubt — about the greediest folk there are: the spinsters (prediction: look for Kenner to be invited on Real Time with Bill Maher). Visionary film-maker at the forefront of American cinema's digital revolution
The director and producer Gary Winick, who has died of brain cancer aged 49, was at the forefront of American cinema's adoption of digital video (Dv), along with more high-profile names such as Steven Soderbergh and David Fincher. Winick believed that the discreet, lightweight equipment involved, and the flexibility it afforded film-makers, could lead to more direct and emotionally authentic movies, citing "the intimacy that occurs with the actors because of the small cameras". His own work, notably the 2002 coming-of-age story Tadpole, provided some persuasive evidence. His Dv-oriented production company, InDigEnt (Indpendent Digital Entertainment), gave others the funds and encouragement to experiment for themselves. While he insisted on preparation and professionalism ("Don't think that going digital means you can just 'wing it'," he advised newcomers), spontaneity lay at the heart of his approach: "One of the things I always say is:...

Following a long, tough battle with brain cancer, director/producer Gary Winick has died at the age of 49.His name might not have the instant recognition factor of, say, a Tarantino or a Scorsese, but Winick skipped easily between more mainstream films such as 13 Going on 30 and, more recently Letters to Juliet, and indie pics, most successfully with Tadpole. But it’s his contribution to other filmmakers’ work that might have even more resonance, since he co-created digital video collective IndigEnt with John Sloss and IFC Films, which helped get the likes of Rebecca Miller’s Personal Velocity, Steve Buscemi’s Lonesome Jim and Richard Linklater’s Tape made on thrifty budgets.Winick got his start in horror, directing the 1989 film Curfew. His varied career saw him acting as an editor, producer or director on a raft of movies, including Sam the Man, Chelsea Walls, Charlotte’s Web, and, as mentioned above,...

As Hollywood celebrated yesterday, one of its independent voices quietly slipped away. Gary Winick, director of Letters to Juliet, Bride Wars and 13 Going on 30, died at age 49 following a long fight with brain cancer. Related: Anne Hathaway does a mean Katie Holmes impression Though most filmgoers probably know his work directing actress-friendly films starring Amanda Seyfried, Anne Hathaway, Kate Hudson and Jennifer Garner, the director was also a force in independent film. As founder of InDigEnt, Winick produced 19 independent films over the last decade, including Ethan Hawke's Chelsea Walls, the Katie Holmes vehicle Pieces of April, Rebecca Miller's Personal Velocity and his own Sundance...

The day of the Oscar ceremony is supposed to be the most celebrated night on the film calendar but Matt Dentler tweeted last night the tragic news that director Gary Winick had passed away, just weeks short of his 50th birthday.
“Gary Winick died today. Too late to make the Oscars tribute, but way too early. He leaves behind a legacy of supporting indie film and NYC.”
Winick was an active studio director, having turned in the melodrama Letters to Juliet just last year, and previously for helming Bride Wars, 13 Going On 30 and Charlotte’s Web. Without a doubt he was pivotal in the shaping of Jennifer Garner, Anne Hathaway and most recently Amanda Seyfried into genuine film stars, giving them a loving direction (his camera was always in love with his beautiful film stars & their locale) and a generous platform to shine – but according to Coming Soon, his biggest...

Craig here, asking you all (on her 40th birthday): where is Uma at?
Ah, Uma. Always the bridesmaid, never the bride. And despite actually being Tarantino's Bride twice last decade. What is it about Uma? She's widely known and adored by many, yet never seems to (quite) make it to the top of the A-list. The likes of Helen Hunt, Gwyneth Paltrow, Charlize Theron, Reese Witherspoon, Renée Zellweger, Jennifer Connelly, Angelina Jolie and Hilary Swank - all peers and contemporaries - have bagged themselves Oscars in the last thirteen-or-so years. The simple question is: where's Uma's gold?
She's one of the most uniquely beautiful actresses working, but nowadays, more so than in the early '90s, she doesn't often tend to get the recognition come awards season, or even appear on any of those Sexiest Hollywood Stars lists that crop up year-on-year anymore (although, is this really a fair...

I haven't been at all enthused about the idea of watching Megan Fox and Mickey Rourke get cuddly in the upcoming Passion Play -- is anyone, really? -- but fie those buggers for making the project infinitely more interesting. According to Jimmy Scott's official webpage, he has not only recorded music for the film's soundtrack, but was on location earlier this month for a role in the film.
For those who aren't familiar with Jimmy Scott, save for the times I reference him, he was a hugely talented singer from the '40s through '60s whose success was repeatedly thwarted by corrupt music execs (including an album made with Ray Charles that was suppressed after a threatened lawsuit). Although he was even Billie Holiday's favorite singer, he faded from the scene until the '90s when fame finally caught up with Scott. Gaining the respect of biggies like Lou Reed,...

Actor Ethan Hawke was given a free room at New York's famous Chelsea Hotel on the understanding he reconciled with estranged wife Uma Thurman.
Hotel boss Stanley Bard agreed to let his movie star pal stay at his place for a month after Hawke returned to the Big Apple from Europe, where he had been filming Before Sunset - on the understanding he took the time to repair his shattered marriage.
Hawke tells WENN, "I was in Paris and my marriage was completely falling apart and I knew I didn't have a place to live when I finished the movie, so I called Stanley up and he said, 'I thought you might be calling me. Boy, you screwed up that marriage!' I said, 'I know that, but do you think you have a room? I need two rooms because I've got my kids.'
He said, 'Here's what I'm gonna do. I'm gonna give you a room for free for a month so you could get your wife back. Go get her back, just don't even worry about it.' I'm like, 'Alright Stanley, that's very sweet, but it's probably gonna be more than a month.' He said, 'No charge, you just save your marriage.'"
Hawke, who directed 2001 movie Chelsea Walls which features the famous Manhattan landmark, failed to save his marriage. Hawke appears in Abel Ferrara’s new documentary Chelsea on the Rocks, about the hotel and its famous guests.

Uma Thurman still misses her close friend Natasha Richardson - because she delighted in watching the driven actress excel in every arena of life.
Richardson, Thurman's co-star in 2001's Chelsea Walls, died in March after suffering brain trauma following a freak skiing accident in Montreal, Canada.
And Thurman insists her death was a tragic loss because her pal's zest for life inspired those around her.
Thurman tells Harper's Bazaar U.K., "She would have a plan on arrival anywhere and would be carving the best out of life and every situation and every person.
"She wasn't as much a passenger as I am, which made us great companions in life... because every driver needs a passenger and every passenger needs a driver. So it's a big loss in my life."
But Thurman, who is currently preparing to wed tycoon Arpad Busson in London, insists Richardson's passing has taught her to maintain a positive perspective.
She adds, "Isn't life amazing? Isn't life full of surprises? When it comes to things like marriage, you just never know.
"I find that growing up has been all about realising that life gets more serious, and that it's also really important to increase your sense of humour."...

One simple, regular fall on a ski slope has led to the unfortunate death of Tony-award winning actress Natasha Richardson. As we posted yesterday, Richardson was on a beginner's slope when she had what seemed to be a minor fall. However, an hour later, she began complaining of headaches and was rushed to the hospital. In just two days, this fall became fatal as she worsened and was finally taken off life support. As E! Online reports, she was pronounced dead earlier today, and will receive a small and private funeral soon.
A rep for Richardson's husband, Liam Neeson, says: "Liam Neeson, his sons, and the entire family are shocked and devastated by the tragic death of their beloved Natasha. They are profoundly grateful for the support, love and prayers of everyone, and ask for privacy during this very difficult time."

In honor of Natasha Richardson, an older review of one of her finer roles, in a grossly underappreciated film. Indie-Brit (or perhaps, Indie-u.K.) is practically its own genre at this point. In recent years there have been a host of movies that, to one degree or another, feel like they belong together, and not just because of where they were filmed, or where they take place. Movies like: ‘The Full Monty’, ‘Lucky Break’, ‘Waking Ned Devine’, ‘Billy Elliot’, ‘Brassed Off’, and others serve to define the genre. These are movies that aren’t merely made in the same place (often by the same people), but they are saying largely the same thing, and are mainly made for the same audience. That seems like a genre to me. Another notable of the group, and in keeping with its fine tradition (if you think it’s fine, a tradition, or indeed...

- Right before he settled down to have a family, Ethan Hawke dropped acting in favor of the Bill Shakespeare profession of writing. Almost a decade ago he published what was his first novel and what is today in 2nd time out in the director’s chair. Chelsea Walls - a forgettable talkie film with plenty of names and way too much talking was his debut, and The Hottest State (to be released by Th!NKFilm on August 24th) is his own book to movie adaptation. The film got a Venice premiere and didn't generate the sort of buzz that a Before Sunset would. ...

- As you may or may not recall, Ethan Hawke’s first novel(-la? Takes like one trip to the bathroom to read that thing) was in talks to become a silver screen adaptation since late 2003. Late last year we finally heard that shooting for the IFC-distributed film was scheduled to start early this year, with Mark Webber (Chelsea Walls) and Catalina Sandino Moreno Conchita Alonso (Maria Full of Grace… those two last names are obviously not hers, they just seemed to fit so perfectly…) who have recently signed on to star. The indie production will co-star Michelle Williams (Brockeback Mountain), Josh Zuckerman (latest Project Greenlight film Feast), Laura Linney (Kinsey), Sonia Braga (Moon Over Parador) and Hawke himself, which he will also direct. The story recounts your typical “divorced-parents-boy-uses-good-looks-for-sex-meets-girl-who’s-in-a-band-who-dumps-him-after-returning-from-Paris”. Story of my life. Only replace ‘girl who’s in band’ by ‘homeless man on the street’ and ‘return
