I was looking forward to seeing this unusual co-production from Russia, Japan and Canada! Everything about this project sounds like a lot of fun. It has a wild soundtrack by DJ Krush, beautiful artwork by 4C (the company that also did the animation for “Tekkonkinkreet” and “The Animatrix”) and a crazy story with occult Nazis and Russian soldiers. What more can you ask for? It had its international premiere as part of the big Manga Night on the Piazza Grande, that started off with Yoshiyuki Tomino’s “Mobil Suit Gundam 1” from 1981. After 2 ½ hours of old school animation, I was pretty anxious to finally see Yoshiharu Ashino’s debut as a director.
The story is simple, though it consists of many elements: World War 2 has reached its peak and Russia »

War movies that go outside the traditional lines of the genre don’t happen enough. Saving Private Ryan may have an epic running time, but the entire feature is generic war-movie action, even if executed superbly. Even Apocalypse Now and Platoon have very generic war film structures. Enemy at the Gates, however, strays boldly from war film conventions by daring to be less about a war and more about an enrapturing game of cat and mouse. When boiled down to its core, the film is actually a spy vs. spy film juxtaposed over a war setting. By playing with the genre tropes, Enemy at the Gates tells a riveting tale about two snipers in the ultimate game of chess.
Enemy at the Gates starts like a war movie should with an incredible sweeping battle sequence which sets up Vassili Zaitsev (Jude Law) as sniper extraordinaire. The tactics employed by the »

Chicago – Paramount Home Video is unleashing waves of catalog titles this month. It started with the comedy wave last Tuesday and continues with a diverse slate of action films this week.
Like the comedy set, the films have very little in common other than their genre (and even that is a bit sketchy with “The Machinist” bearing little resemblance to “Paycheck”). The highlights of the wave are clearly “3 Days of the Condor,” “The Machinist,” and “Changing Lanes” with “Enemy at the Gates” certainly having enough visual power to warrant a look in HD. “Paycheck”? Good luck with that one.
All five titles were released on Tuesday, May 19th, 2009.

This week probably stacks up as the best for new releases this year - especially considering the range of different titles and genres available - so there should be something for everyone in this edition. As always, check out our “pick of the week” and links to all of the new releases below.
First up, we have a spectacular 6 disc “Terminator 2 Limited Edition Complete Collector’s Set in an Endoskull”, which is by far the most extravagant and innovative release on this format so far. It contains every version of the film you could want, and more special features than you can shake a T-1000 at. And the Endoskull looks Fantastic. Bear in mind, this is a limited release and no one is sure whether further copies of the set will be issued, so you might want to snap one up quickly. There is also a far more affordable 2-disc “Skynet” edition of the film, »
