Looking at the crop of new scripted series selected by the broadcast networks for 2024-25, one cannot help but reminisce about the 20th anniversary of what may have been broadcast television’s greatest season ever.
The 2004-05 season introduced several genre-defying series — all but one based on original ideas — whose impact on TV storytelling is still being felt: Lost, Desperate Housewives, Grey’s Anatomy, House, The Office and Veronica Mars. Remarkably, one of them, Grey’s Anatomy is still around, having just been renewed by ABC for Season 21, along with another show that premiered that same season, animated comedy American Dad!.
Aside from the fact that the current economic realities of the TV business will likely never support another drama going to 21 seasons, broadcast networks will also likely never take chances on so many unconventional ideas: a sci-fi drama on a deserted island that set the tone for modern genre fare, a...

16 years ago, the audience saw the first season of Breaking Bad, which later became the most favorite series for millions of viewers around the world. AMC’s crime drama has become notorious for changing its tone, initially containing buddy comedy elements, towards a darker tale about a person betraying all his ideals on his way to power.
The character development of the show’s main character, Walter White, who turns into a relentless drug lord, passed through a number of the essential check-point moments, proving the horror of Walter’s transformation, with one of them standing out of them.
Breaking Bad fans would agree that the most devastating events of the whole show are Jane’s death and the following Wayfarer 515 disaster, closing the second season in 2009. As you can remember, it was White who was partially responsible for both of them.

Although the long-running sitcom technically has Frankie Muniz in every episode, the actor recently revealed to other contestants of I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! Australia that he did, in fact, leave the show for a while. What exactly happened?
The former child star revealed that he left the sitcom for two entire episodes because of the continuous tension that was present on the set. Frankie Muniz explained this week why his titular Malcolm in the Middle character was absent for two episodes of the show: The actor walked off the set.
“There were two episodes I’m not in. I walked off the set,” Muniz said during an appearance on Australia’s I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here, shared by News.com.au.
“Everyone was so afraid to stand up when certain people were controlling or rude or disrespectful,” he continued. “They walked on pins and needles.”
Muniz clarified that it wasn’t necessarily him specifically experiencing the tension, but that he was “so mortified by seeing people afraid to stand up for themselves” that “it was worth it to me.
“I didn’t care if they told me I was never going back,” he added, also ceding that he was able to make such a move given his status as the series protagonist.

Frankie Muniz shared on the latest episode of “I’m a Celebrity Australia” (via News.com.au) that he once “walked off” the set of his beloved Fox sitcom “Malcolm in the Middle” when everyone else was refusing to stand up to certain people who were “controlling or rude or disrespectful.” Muniz starred on the comedy as the eponymous child genius for seven seasons, but he missed two episodes because of his decision.
“There were two episodes I’m not in. I walked off the set,” Muniz said, explaining that his actions were due to set tensions. “Everyone was so afraid to stand up when certain people were controlling or rude or disrespectful. Malcolm in the Middle is a cult classic coming-of-age sitcom that has left a permanent mark on early 2000s television. Created by Linwood Boomer, the series originally ran from January 9, 2000, to May 14, 2006, spanning seven seasons and 151 episodes. Even though the story ended, Malcolm in the Middle has remained a major part of television history and it is, even today, considered to have raised a whole generation of children and teenagers who devotedly watched Malcolm and his family over the years.
Now, it’s been almost 20 years since the final episode aired, but there have been talks – for a while now – that a reboot with the original cast is in the works. The project is supposedly headed by Bryan Cranston, who played Malcolm’s dad, Hal, in the original series, but nothing official has been announced.

Frankie Muniz is opening up about his experience as a child actor and why he would “never” let his son follow in his footsteps.
The actor-turned-nascar driver told Pedestrian TV in an interview shared on TikTok Sunday that he wouldn’t let his son Mauz, who’s currently 3 years old, start working as an actor at a young age because “it’s an ugly world in general.”
“I would never let my kid go into the business,” Muniz said. “And not that I had a negative experience, because to be honest, my experience was 100 percent positive. But I know so many people, friends that were close to me, that had such insanely negative experiences.”
“I just think it’s an ugly world in general,” he added. “I never cared about rejection, but there’s a ton of rejection.”

In The Late Great, Primetimer staffers and contributors revisit shows that were cut short, but still cast a long shadow over the TV landscape.
Twenty years ago, a short-lived series from Todd Holland and Bryan Fuller (purveyor of cult hits Pushing Daisies and Hannibal) made its debut on Fox: Wonderfalls.
The quirky hour-long show was unlike anything that was airing on television at the time. Network lineups in 2004 tended to be primarily made up of procedurals, sitcoms, teen soaps, and unscripted programming. A whimsical dramedy about an Ivy League graduate who starts receiving guidance from inanimate toy animals in order to dole out random good deeds may have been considered a little too left of center.

Gail Berman’s four-decade-plus career has taken her from Broadway to the big screen and back again, with stints as a studio chief and a new media entrepreneur in between.
“I’m your pivot girl,” says Berman, who last year received nominations for both a best picture Oscar (“Elvis”) and a comedy series Emmy (Netflix’s “Wednesday”). “Every five years, I have to do something else. It’s just my nature.”
Berman scored her first producing credit at the age of 23 when she and her former U. of Maryland classmate Susan R. Rose brought to Broadway a production of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.” After a decade-long run in the theater biz, burned out on raising money, she took a job as an associate producer for HBO’s new sister outlet, the Comedy Channel.

After several years of keeping their best television shows and movies to themselves, major film and television studios have signaled a willingness to license their content to other streaming services — and no one stands to benefit more from this sudden shift than Disney, according to a new report published this week.
On Monday, research firm Ampere Analysis said Disney’s robust library of highly-sought motion pictures and television series put it in a competitive position to win the secondary front of the so-called “streaming wars,” one where film and TV studios seek to tap into additional sources of revenue by licensing their content to large services like Netflix and Amazon’s Prime Video.

The beloved procedural crime show "Bones" ran for an impressive 12 seasons, continuing the upward TV star trajectory for David Boreanaz after his work on shows like "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Angel," and helping to launch Emily Deschanel to become a household name after a slew of small roles in a handful of TV shows and movies.
As the co-stars of "Bones," Deschanel and Boreanaz naturally appeared in every single episode of the series. And while viewers know guest stars didn't pop up nearly as frequently, some casual watchers may think that some of the more familiar faces might have at least popped up one time per season. But as it turns out, out of all of the guest stars who graced the series from 2005-2017, only one performer managed to make at least one appearance across all 12 seasons: Patricia Belcher, who played Caroline Julian, a federal prosecutor for the U.

The recurring rumors and hope for a revival of the beloved NBC sitcom The Office have returned this week, and this time it’s come from a surprising source — Bryan Cranston. And the Breaking Bad Emmy winner thinks the Dunder Mifflin crew should now be working on a bigger screen.
Appearing on the Office Ladies podcast, hosted by two of the series stars, Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey, Cranston floated the idea of a The Office feature-length movie, which would show where the whole gang landed a decade after the series concluded.
“Let’s say that there’s not a reboot series, but what if there was a movie?” Cranston pondered on the podcast. “Something to where we can see where these people are. These people in the entire cast that we’re curious about. We wondered at the end, where did they go? What did become of them?”

Once upon a time, on a planet without widely accessible internet, people could spread outlandish urban legends without being instantly debunked. Actually, they can still do that, provided the recipient of said ludicrous information has been conditioned by bad-faith actors to doubt what educated people refer to as facts ... but you're here to learn why Bryan Cranston panicked over a stunt on "Malcolm in the Middle," so let's cut to the chase.
Cranston was born in 1956. This means he was eight years old when "Goldfinger" became a global phenomenon. For kids of his era, Bond movies represented the apex of cinema. It was just about all they wanted to talk about. And people found some amusingly inventive ways to talk about them.
I was born in 1973, and by the time I was old enough to get in on the Bond discourse, one of the wildest stories still making the rounds was that actor Shirley Eaton,...

The list of actors to be recognized as both skilled dramatic and comedic actors on the small screen is fairly limited when you think about it. But one man who has crossed the genres is Bryan Cranston, really breaking out with sitcom Malcolm in the Middle before tying the record for most Emmys for lead dramatic work on Breaking Bad. But there’s only one he’d be interested in revisiting…
Speaking with Entertainment Tonight, Bryan Cranston reiterated his stance that he is against a Breaking Bad reunion, suggesting it ended in the most perfect way. “Everything should come to an end. Everything’s cyclical. Our lives are cyclical. The seasons, trees, everything. And, so, it’s okay to have a beginning, middle, and end, and then let it go. Bryan Cranston is remembering a dangerous stunt he did while filming Malcolm in the Middle.
The 67-year-old actor starred in the family comedy during the entirety of its run from 2000 to 2006.
Bryan recently opened up about a stunt involving paint that nearly killed him.
Keep reading to find out more…

When the nominations for the 1959 Primetime Emmys were revealed, 13-year-old supporting candidate Johnny Crawford (“The Rifleman”) became the youngest male acting contender in TV academy history and then retained the title for the next six and a half decades. After so many years of his record appearing to be unbreakable, it was finally shattered this summer by Best Drama Guest Actor nominee Keivonn Montreal Woodard, who turned 10 this February. His historic bid for HBO’s “The Last of Us” makes him not only a credit to child actors but also to deaf performers, as no male one had ever earned Emmy recognition before.
Woodard appears in two first-season episodes of “The Last of Us” as Sam Burrell, a survivor of both leukemia and a pandemic-induced apocalypse who lives under the guardianship of his adult brother, Henry (Lamar Johnson). Kate Micucci said Monday that she is cancer-free after having surgery a week ago following a lung cancer diagnosis.
The Big Bang Theory alum took to TikTok over the weekend to thank well-wishers “for of the good wishes and all the love” after revealing her diagnosis.
“I have great news which is that I am cancer-free,” she said Saturday. “The surgery last week went great, all the reports I got back are that it worked out and I don’t need to do any more treatment.”
She also thanked her nurses and doctors for the care and for “figuring [the diagnosis] out early, because I am very very lucky and I know that.”

Mucci most recently was cast in a voice role for the upcoming animated Angry Birds Mystery Island TV series. Her other credits include NBC’s Four Kings, Scrubs, Till Death, Raising Hope, Steven Universe, How I Met Your Mother and Malcolm in the Middle, among others. The grind is as real as it gets when you're working on network television. Where an intense film shoot can require 12 to 16-hour days for several months, a TV show demands the same daily time commitment year in and year out. Even decades of back-breaking work in action movies couldn't prepare Sylvester Stallone for the "brutal" reality of making a television series when he starred in Taylor Sheridan's mafia drama "Tulsa King."
You can imagine, then, that Emily Deschanel was more than ready for a break after a decade-plus of playing crime-solving forensics expert Temperance Brennan on "Bones." Hart Hanson's procedural was the rare series to survive the gauntlet that was Fox in the 2000s, ultimately spanning 12 seasons, 246 episodes, three U.S. presidential administrations, and a confusing-but-amusing crossover with "Sleepy Hollow." "Bones" ran for so long that it only ended a year before Deschanel's sister, Zooey Deschanel, finished...

(Welcome to Ani-time Ani-where, a regular column dedicated to helping the uninitiated understand and appreciate the world of anime.)
The family sitcom is a staple of American television, a genre that has drawn audiences for decades by poking fun at daily life and the perceived idea of the nuclear family. It's no wonder that the biggest American animated shows are sitcoms, like "The Simpsons," "Family Guy," and even "Rick and Morty."
I firmly believe that the easiest anime to recommend to people not already familiar with the medium are those that are in some way recognizable to them. Shows like "Attack on Titan" start out as a more messed up "The Walking Dead," and "Monster" essentially operates like an animated prestige TV drama. Also on that list is "Spy x Family" (like in "Hunter x Hunter" the x is silent), a show that embraces the absurdity that makes anime special...

Many actors find early success in the horror genre. Jennifer Aniston battled an evil, pun-loving Irish creature in "Leprechaun" years before she landed "Friends," for example. Charlize Theron's first role came in "Children of the Corn III: Urban Harvest." Even "Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation" boasted not one, but two future Oscar winners in its cast, Matthew McConaughey and Renée Zellweger.
That said, not everyone manages to go on to achieve that same level of success. For every Michelle Williams ("Halloween H20: 20 Years Later") and Leonardo DiCaprio ("Critters 3"), there are countless horror stars whose careers don't reach the same level of renown. It can be especially interesting to look back at teen horror films, which often feature ensemble casts, to see who made it and who didn't. The actors on this list all have respectable careers, and most are still working in Hollywood; they simply never...

Emma Stone is an Oscar-winning actress who has enjoyed three Academy Awards nominations in her career. Let’s take a look back at 13 of her best films, ranked worst to best.
Stone began acting at an early age, making television appearances as a teenager in such shows as “Medium,” “Malcolm in the Middle,” and “Lucky Louie.” She transitioned to film with a prominent role in the high school sex romp “Superbad” (2007). Just three years later, she was competing at the Golden Globes as Best Comedy/Musical Actress for her lead role in “Easy A” (2010).
It took four more years for Stone to reap her first Oscar bid: Best Supporting Actress for “Birdman” (2014). She may have lost to Patricia Arquette (“Boyhood”), but the groundwork was set for her eventual victory in Best Actress for the musical “La La Land” (2016). Her 2023 film “Poor Things” will likely bring her back to the Oscars again.

Actor Bryan Cranston had an interesting link with Scream star Hayden Panettiere before the two officially met. Ironically, Panettiere would audition for a role in Cranston’s iconic comedy series Malcolm in the Middle. But Panettiere’s looks posed a problem.
Hayden Panettiere was the best actor for her ‘Malcolm in the Middle’ role, but she was too pretty Bryan Cranston | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
Cranston was already familiar with the Panettiere family before the Heroes actor was even born. Panettere’s mother, Leslie Vogel, played Cranston’s wife in the long-running 1980s soap opera Loving. Decades later, Cranston would end up auditioning Vogel’s daughter Panettiere in an episode of Malcolm in the Middle he was directing.
During the process, Panettiere impressed Cranston and the show’s producer with her acting ability. But Cranston worried that Panettiere didn’t have the right look for the role she was trying out for.

This article contains spoilers for the final episode of Malcolm in the Middle.
Besides animated series, there are very few sitcoms which maintain a consistent level of hilarity with every beat of comic timing. No matter what point you turn on Malcolm in the Middle, any episode, something will make you laugh within 18 seconds. I’m not talking giggles or chuckles, but full-out guffaws that make you miss the next six jokes.
Other shows may be more consistent in overall quality, but none match the stream of funny that comes out of the series created by Linwood Boomer, himself the third of four siblings who was placed in the “gifted” class at school. After graduating, Boomer acted on Little House on the Prairie, another show focusing on a middle child. The semi-autobiographical Malcolm in the Middle doesn’t just call for a second look. It screams for a repeat binge.

Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis were two of more than 50 people who wrote to the judge in the Danny Masterson sexual assault trial to support the convicted actor ahead of his sentencing, per court documents obtained by Variety.
Kutcher and Kunis, who are married and share two young children, starred with Masterson on Fox’s sitcom “That ’70s Show,” which ran for eight seasons and 200 episodes between 1998 and 2006. Danny Masterson is headed to prison.
The That '70s Show alum was sentenced to 30 years after being convicted of rape earlier this year.
Ahead of the sentencing, it was reported that he faced a sentence of 30 years to life in prison.
The news comes months after a jury of seven women and five men found Masterson guilty of two of three rape counts after seven days of deliberations.
Masterson was accused of raping three women at his Hollywood Hills home from 2001 and 2003, at the height of his fame on the Fox comedy series.
The actor's first trial ended last year in a mistrial, but the judge opted to re-try The Ranch alum with a different set of jurors.
All three women in the case opened up to the judge about how Masterson's crimes had ruined their lives and requested that he be given life behind bars.

113 days into the Writers Guild of America strike against the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, there appeared to be a glimmer of hope. The AMPTP had at long last reached out to the WGA's negotiating committee with a new counteroffer that would hopefully bring both sides closer together, and, thus, hasten an end to a work stoppage that mushroomed on July 14 to include the Screen Actors Guild -- American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. Both sides met on Tuesday evening, and, well, the meeting went poorly.
AMPTP president Carol Lombardini was joined by Warner Bros. Discovery's David Zaslav, Disney's Bob Iger, Universal's Donna Langley and Netflix's Ted Sarandos, but, rather than negotiate, the quintet launched into a lecture about the quality of their counteroffer -- which was their first and, evidently, final counteroffer. When the WGA negotiators pushed back on the counteroffer's numerous "limitations and loopholes,...

“Poker Face” fan-favorite Natasha Lyonne received a Best Comedy Actress Emmy nomination this year alongside Quinta Brunson (“Abbott Elementary”), Rachel Brosnahan (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), Christina Applegate (“Dead to Me”) and Jenna Ortega (“Wednesday”). As of this writing, Lyonne is in last place to win at Gold Derby, with less than 3% of our prognosticators backing her. However, the fact that she recently gained the favor of the Television Critics Association proves she should be taken much more seriously. Are we underestimating her at the 2023 Emmys?
Given Lyonne’s status as the very first regular acting Emmy nominee from any Peacock program and her show’s absence from all other major categories, her doubters initially had a leg to stand on, but that isn’t the case anymore. Her TCA Award victory for Individual Achievement in Comedy is an undeniably big deal and gives her many statistical advantages that should cause her competitors and naysayers concern.

Young Sheldon is one of the best and most beloved family sitcoms out there. The CBS series started as a spin-off of the hit sitcom series The Big Bang Theory and follows the early life of one of the main characters of the original series. There have been many sitcoms about precocious kids but none of them are similar to Young Sheldon. Young Sheldon recently concluded its Season 6 and while you wait for Season 7 here are some similar shows that you should check out next.

Synopsis: Leonard and Sheldon are brilliant physicists, the kind of “beautiful minds” that understand how the universe works. But none of that genius helps them interact with people, especially women. All this begins to change when a free-spirited beauty named Penny moves in next door. Sheldon, Leonard’s roommate, is quite content spending his nights playing Klingon Boggle with their socially dysfunctional friends,...

Bryan Cranston, the Emmy-winning actor best known for his work in “Breaking Bad” and “Malcolm in the Middle,” has some choice words for Disney CEO Bob Iger: “We will not allow you to take away our dignity.”
Cranston took the stage at SAG-AFTRA’s “Rock the City for a Fair Wage” rally in Times Square on Tuesday. After a couple of jokes and comments praising union solidarity, Cranston noted that the rally was taking place right in front of a building owned by Disney.
“I have a message for Mr. Iger: I know you look at things through a different lens. We don’t expect you to understand who we are. But we ask you to hear us and, beyond that, to listen to us when we tell you we will not be having our jobs taken away and given to robots,” Cranston said to cheers. “We will not...

In the second and final season of Showtime series Your Honor, Bryan Cranston reprises the role of disgraced judge Michael Desiato. At the end of Season 1, Desiato’s son was murdered by the Baxter crime family, and fresh out of prison himself, Desiato not only seeks to avenge his son’s death but to rediscover his own moral compass and find some kind of redemption. It’s another nuanced performance in a storied career that includes such roles as the inimitable Walter White in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, the titular character in Trumbo, Hal in Malcolm in the Middle and Stan in Little Miss Sunshine. Here, Cranston muses on his French country retirement plans, explains the glaring absence of karaoke in his life, and reveals his dreams of making a Broadway musical and why his desert island TV picks definitely won’t include Breaking Bad.

“I am the one who knocks reunions!” Bryan Cranston says he was approached to do a Breaking Bad reunion, which would have coincided with the 15th anniversary of the show’s 2008 premiere, but rebuffed it, suggesting it could be a slippery slope.
In a new interview with GQ, Bryan Cranston said, “They wanted to do a Breaking Bad 15-year reunion…And I thought, ‘In a quick five years from now we’re going to do the 20 and then the 25, then the…’ It’s like, let’s not try to do too much.” Part of this seems to have to do with the reception and legacy of Breaking Bad, which is typically considered one of the greatest TV shows ever. And while Cranston won’t explicitly say where the show ranks, its status is undeniable. “I think it’s a little arrogant to step into that conversation…Let it be what it is.

But Cranston admitted that even now, more than 20 years later, he still misses his “Malcolm in the Middle” comrades “like crazy.”
“We had such a great family on that [show], and I certainly would be open to that if there was a good idea that came up like, ‘Oh, that would...
