Sex & Nudity

  • Part of a woman's breast and nipple is very briefly seen. The woman is wearing undergarments and her breast is mostly concealed behind a man's arm. It does not seem this shot was even intentional but merely accidental exposure via "wardrobe malfunction".

Violence & Gore

  • A boy shoots a young girl. A pool of blood is seen briefly.
  • Boys shoot old man. No blood is seen.
  • Young man shoots girl. Blood soaks the girls dress.
  • Woman is shown with blood on her hands and injuries resembling stigmata.
  • Man is shown choking his wife.
  • A chicken is decapitated with an axe. The head is shown burning in a fire amid shots of the headless body running in circles. No blood.
  • A boiled sheep's head is prepared for cooking, including a lengthy removal of the eye. The head is then shown boiling in a pot.
  • A man slashes a woman's throat with a straight razor. Blood is only seen briefly.
  • A man shoots two women.
  • There are many other narrative descriptions of violent deaths and injuries that are not portrayed on screen.

Profanity

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Cocaine use is mentioned in the narration.
  • Many people are described as drunks or as having committed crimes and/or died under the influence of alcohol.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • It cannot be stressed enough that this film deals with death, murder, insanity, disease, infanticide, alcoholism, arson, and other disturbing events. However, none of this is played for horror value, and everything is shown from an historical context. Many of the more shocking events are revealed primarily through narrated newspaper clippings, and the related visuals are more suggestive than graphic.
  • Footage of a man hanging is used twice, once at the very beginning and once toward the end of the film.
  • Photographs of dead children in coffins are displayed.
  • Several scenes portray dead bodies being discovered.
  • Several scenes of people on the verge of committing or attempting suicide. Most of these are portrayed in a non-graphic manner though the intent is very clear (i.e. a girl sinking beneath a lake; a man lying across train tracks as train approaches).
  • Several scenes of burning buildings.
  • Photographs of Native Americans whose faces have been disfigured by smallpox scars are briefly displayed.
