When Jon Favreau said he would not be available to direct "The Avengers" for Marvel, he opened the doors for speculation about who would be behind the camera.
Favreau's "Iron Man" breathed life into the current wave of Marvel films culminating in 2012's gigantic crossover event, but someone else will have to step in to bring his storyline together with "The Incredible Hulk," "The First Avenger: Captain America" and "Thor."
Here are five directors who might be able to pull it off and make the "Avengers" movie fans want to see.
Zack Snyder: Was "Watchmen" Snyder's last word in superhero movies? Its box office performance may have made that debatable, but its visual presentation was spectacular. Snyder's name sits on a short list including Brett Ratner and Bryan Singer who have tackled superhero team movies in recent years, and his name comes at the top right now.

In the upcoming film, Ben Stiller and Teri Polo will return to reprise their roles as couple Gaylord Focker and Pamela Focker, who will welcome a child or possibly twin babies. Not everyone is digging the look of the Na'vi in "Avatar," and frankly, neither was I -- until a picture of Sigourney Weaver as a Na'vi popped up online, that is. In an upcoming issue of Empire, the "Aliens" heroine -- who plays a scientist in the James Cameron-directed film -- is revealed in all of her blue-skinned, yellow-eyed glory... and holy heck if she doesn't look exactly like an aliened-up Ellen Ripley!
The transformation of Weaver got me wondering about other Cameron-directed characters who'd benefit from the "Avatar" treatment -- and it got our crack team of designers wondering, too! The result is our very own visual interpretation of five classic Cameron characters as Na'vi warriors!

All the Internet movie buzz right now surrounds Neil Blomkamp's new film, District 9, a piece of breakout cinema that is certain to catapult the 29 year-old writer/director into the Hollywood A-list of young, influential filmmakers.
We know that D9 is receiving near universal acclaim (watch for our review this weekend). Almost all the critics are praising this science fiction apartheid parable about a portion of South Africa that has become a haven for refugees from another world. Sara Vilkomerson of The New York Observer writes, "District 9 is the most exciting science fiction movie to come along in ages; definitely the most thrilling film of the summer; and quite possibly the best film I've seen all year"...while Entertainment Weekly's Lisa Schwarzbaum described it as "...madly original, cheekily political, [and] altogether exciting..."
But just who is this Blomkamp fellow, and how did he get his start? Read on...

One Variety report about The Twilight Saga: Eclipse casting, and the Twilight world knows her name. She is Jodelle Ferland, and she has recently been announced (by both Variety and herself) as a new cast member for the third in the Twilight film series. Though her role is as yet unknown, Variety states that Ferland will portray "a vampire who has just been turned." While the barely there description could apply to a host of characters in Eclipse, the most prominent (female) vampress in the book series is Bree - a newborn vampire who survives the initial vampire showdown, but whose bloodlust for Bella puts her in a precarious circumstances. Ultimately, despite Carlisle's extension of an offering to care for and develop Bree's, ahem, socially responsible behavior, the Volturi guard present after the battle will not allow for it (pennance for her work with Victoria (to be portrayed by Bryce Dallas Howard »

Jessica Alba is no stranger to comic book adaptations, having played Susan Storm aka Invisible Woman in the Fantastic Four films and exotic dancer Nancy Callahan in Sin City.
She also played genetically-advanced supersoldier Max Guevara in James Cameron's Dark Angel sci-fi TV series.
The 28-year-old is now reported to have acquired the screen rights to The Insiders, a series of graphic novels created in 2002 by Jean-Claude Bartoll and Renaud Garreta and published by Dargaud.
According to ICv2, the news originated on a number of French websites.
Alba's partner in the deal to create film and video game adaptations of the books was named as Sin City director Robert Rodriguez.
Alba would play the heroine of The Insiders, a Columbian called Najah Cruz, described as being "as deadly as she is beautiful" and with "the weapons expertise and combat skills of a James Bond."

According to a report at ICv2, Jessica Alba and Robert Rodriguez have teamed up to option the French comic book series Insiders. The original source for this information appears to be the French version of Premiere. Insiders is a spy thriller in several volumes, reportedly revolving around the female lead Najah Cruz and I'm assuming that Alba has her eye on this vaguely Dark Angel-ish role as well as the Executive Producer's seat. In the series, Cruz is a Columbian working for the White House, tasked to infiltrate and bring down a global crime syndicate. Judging from the titles of the seven volumes of Insiders already issued, there's a whole lot of globetrotting going on: Chechnya, Afghanistan, the Kremlin, some Gulag or another, Peking. And I think that's in series order. The strip was created by Jean-Claude Bartoll, previously an investigative journalist and also the author of the Terrorist and Mekong comics, »

Is it not enough that Jessica Alba has already played iconic comic book characters in “Fantastic Four” and “Sin City“? Apparently not, as rumors swirl today about her involvement with yet another paneled page property.
ICv2 is reporting that Alba has acquired the screen rights to a French comic book series titled “The Insiders.” The news originated from “various French language Websites,” which also pegs Alba’s “Sin City” director Robert Rodriguez as her partner in securing the comic’s film rights.
“The Insiders” first debuted in 2002 from Jean-Claude Bartoll and Renaud Garreta, yielding seven volumes of the series in France with an eighth scheduled for this October. In the same month, Americans will also see the first volume of “The Insiders” titled Chechen Guerilla — perhaps a move to familiarize stateside audiences with Alba’s upcoming character.
Should the rumors pan out, Alba would play Najah Cruz, a Columbian woman »

It’s a question that has plagued TV-lovers for generations: what happens to all those canceled TV shows and their beloved characters when they vanish into pop culture oblivion? These days, they’re either relegated to DVD box sets or — if they’re lucky — they move on up to the big screen. To see a show that you’ve loved and lost make it to into movie form is pretty much every fan’s dream. So long as it’s done right.
I get why fans of the “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” TV series have been up in arms since news broke that the franchise will make its way to theaters without the help of show creator Josh Weldon. The news kind of sucks for “Buffy” fans, but it got me thinking of all the other shows I love and miss.
