Last week, members of the cast and crew from Inglorious Basterds stormed the red carpet at the New Beverly Cinema to celebrate the release of their film on DVD/Blu-ray. Though just a DVD premiere, spotlights shone into the night, flashbulbs flashed, and pens scribbled on notepads. There were a few surprises - the arrival of stunt-woman extraordinaire and Tarantino alum Zoe Bell, for instance. Or the lovely Diane Krueger (Nina Von Hammersmark) arriving with a dapperly dressed Joshua Jackson on her arm.
But for the most part, the focus of the evening was the cast and crew of the critically acclaimed World War II opus. Among them, most of the titular Basterds, including: Sam Levine, Eli Roth, Omar Doom, B.J. Novak, producer Lawrence Bender and, of course, the biggest “basterd” of them all - Quentin Tarantino.
Collider grabbed a few words with some of the cast before enjoying an evening of disemboweled, »

You can scarcely swing a dead cat lately without hitting some kind of best-of-the-decade list (even though, technically, the first decade of the 21st century doesn't end till next year).
Well, here comes another one. Rather than try to construct another best-shows-of-the-'00s list, though -- something that's already been done here, there and everywhere -- I decided to focus on individual episodes from 2000-09. Are these the flat-out "best" episodes of television over the past 10 years? Probably not. But these are the ones that stick with me, that I can still remember not just for brilliant lines or beautifully constructed plots, but for how I actually felt while watching them. They are, simply, my favorites.
Here's my list, in no particular order. What's yours?
"Final Grades" ("The Wire")
HBO sent critics the entire run of season four of "The Wire" before it premiered in 2006. I had watched the first »

Someday soon, a wiseacre graduate student is going to write a mighty clever dissertation focusing on a strange facet of popular entertainment in the Aughts. The title of that dissertation is going to be something along the lines of "'Virgin' Territory: How Judd Apatow Went From TV Failure to Movie King Without Changing a Thing." The thesis of the dissertation will be that in a two-year period between 1999 and 2001, Judd Apatow executive produced two superb TV shows, arguably (as I have done) two of the best shows of the entire decade. But neither "Freaks and Geeks" nor »

We have made it somewhat of an interesting theme here to discuss the buzz and marketing of one of this year’s mostly highly touted films, Avatar.
The marketing has been discussed in terms of its attempt to use Augmented Reality with the sci-fi fanboys and main demographic of the film. We have also looked at other pieces of the film’s advertising onslaught with their first big media push on Fox’s Sports Sunday with the World Series and the NFL.
Now the TV arm is at it again with a major in episode tie-in on the most recent episode of the hit crime serial Bones. In this week’s Buzz Blender I couldn’t help but look at the episode’s nice little comedic tie-ins with the upcoming film.
In the episode two of the series regulars Sweets (John Francis Daly – of Freaks and Geeks fame) and Hodgins »

I have felt a special bond with Joanna Garcia ever since I was a kid, when she starred in one of my favorite mid-1990s TV shows, Are You Afraid of the Dark? Then, a few years later, she went ahead and starred in one of my favorite late-1990s TV shows, Freaks and Geeks. Fast-forward to 2008, and Garcia landed a starring role in one of my favorite 2008 TV shows, Privileged. And then, just last night, the actress played a large part in the latest episode of one of my favorite mid-to-late-2000s TV shows, How I Met Your Mother. »

Paramount Pictures has hired School of Rock screenwriter Mike White to script Santa Wars, a comedy based on the true story which appeared on This American Life in December 2008. The story, written by Joshuah Bearman, told of two rival factions that developed within a union of professional Santa Clauses, which resulted in a "Santa Claus civil war." White is best when put in the dark comedy arena, and this might be a perfect fit. This story is definitely more akin to Bad Santa than Elf. White's previous credits include Dead Man on Campus, Chuck & Buck, Freaks and Geeks, and The Good Girl. More recently, he's had a turn in more family-friendly territory with School of Rock and Nacho Libre, before making his directorial debut Year of the Dog. After the jump you can find more information about the original story that has inspired this feature film, and even listen to »

Chicago – Ben Foster has stolen scenes in works as diverse as “Six Feet Under,” “Freaks and Geeks,” “3:10 to Yuma,” and “Alpha Dog,” but he truly shines in the spotlight of the lead role in “The Messenger,” giving the best performance of his career to date. The young actor was in town for the Chicago International Film Festival and took some time to speak to us about his research for the film, how one leaves such a dramatic work behind, and his love for co-star Woody Harrelson.
Foster stars in “The Messenger” as Staff Sergeant Will Montgomery, a young man returned home from his tour but with a few months of service left. To fill out his time, Will is assigned to the Casualty Notification Office (and partnered with Woody Harrelson’s Captain Tony Stone), the men who inform “Nok” (next of kin) when their loved one has been killed in the line of duty. »

Ben Foster first impressed viewers with roles on beloved programs like Freaks and Geeks and Six Feet Under. He went on to steal scenes in films like Alpha Dog and 3:10 to Yuma, but he does the best work of his career in Oren Moverman’s incredible drama The Messenger, co-starring Woody Harrelson and Samantha Morton. In the film, Foster plays a soldier who is forced to finish out his service as a Casualty Notification Officer, one of the men who informs next of kin when their loved one ...Read more at MovieRetriever.com »

Judd Apatow is letting the internet interview him, live, on Funny or Die's Writers Room series this Wednesday at 12:30 Pst. They are taking questions for the famed comedy writer-director (Superbad, Anchorman, Pineapple Express) on Facebook and so far 160 people have submitted their pressing inquests. From the looks of it, this could be worth a new lunchtime browser window. Over/Under on number of Freaks and Geeks questions is 4. Some highlights: Would you ever consider making us a good, R-Rated cartoon? Far too few of them. (Jim Moore) The Three Men and a Baby trilogy will be finishing up with Three Men and a Bride, fans of the trilogy are dying to know if you will be working on this much awaited project? (Dave Hanson) How come "Walk Hard" tanked so hard? That one was kinda not too shitty. And when I say "not too shitty", I mean "I could »

From December 11 through 13, alumni of improvisational comedy’s most influential training ground, The Second City, will congregate in Chicago to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the theater’s founding. And as part of my reporting on the theater’s history and its illustrious roster of alumni for this month’s Fanfair section (Laugh Factory: Second City Celebrates 50 Years), I interviewed one of my favorite Second City veterans: Joe Flaherty. Fans of another school of comedy—Judd Apatow University—will remember Flaherty from his role as Harold Weir, father of Lindsay and Sam Weir in the beloved but short-lived Freaks and Geeks. But I revere Flaherty for his work on the always funny, often brilliant Second City television series—Sctv—that began in Toronto and eventually moved to the NBC network on Friday nights as a stepsister to Saturday Night Live, which has counted such Second City alumni as Bill Murray, »

Who's that man in black? It's James Franco, looking suitably enigmatic for his guest-starring stint as a character on General Hospital. Little is known about the role that Franco, 31, will play, except that he is associated with one of the show's bad guys, criminal Jason Morgan. Franco's first appearance is slated for Nov. 20. I know I'm dating myself, but I'm really looking forward to watching the second season of thirtsysomething on DVD.
The first season was released back in August, and I had a blast catching up with great characters like Michael and Melissa Steadman, Elliot Weston and Gary Shepherd. Season two hits DVD in January, thanks to the good folks at Shout! Factory, known for putting out great sets like the packed Freaks and Geeks collection and the recent Transformers "G1" collector's set.
Some people might only think of thirtysomething as "that '80s show about whiny yuppies," and that's fine. But the Emmy-award winning drama brings back a lot of great memories for me. As I mentioned before, I used to watch it with my mom, who I'm pretty sure related to Patricia Wettig's frustrated homemaker Nancy Weston and free spirit Melissa Steadman, played by Melanie Mayron. The two stars of NBC's hit comedy talk about the popular second season
One of NBC's new comedies, Parks and Recreation, is certainly hitting its stride this season. After a short-order six-episode first season, the show was given a 13-episode second season order and was recently picked up for a full 22-episode second season as well. Two of the stars of the show, Rashida Jones and Chris Pratt, who play Ann and Andy, who were a couple in the first season before splitting up, recently held a conference call to discuss this successful second season. Here's what they had to say.
Chris, were you a little worried about what that meant for the fate of - for you on the show because I know this season you're promoted to I believe series regular but were you a little worried that you - what would happen with your character once you guys broke up? »

B.O.B is back, and that'll be big news for fans of the gelatinous blob who snagged most of the big laughs in the animated film blockbuster Monsters vs. Aliens. And what's B.O.B. back in? Well, that'd be Monsters vs. Aliens: Mutant Pumpkins from Outer Space, an original half-hour special premiering Wednesday, October 28, at 8 p.m. Et/Pt on NBC. Set after the events of Monsters vs. Aliens, Mutant Pumpkins finds Susan/Ginormica (Reese Witherspoon) and everybody's favorite monsters -- among them B.O.B. (Seth Rogen) -- working special ops for the U.S. government. And their latest mission finds them in Susan's hometown, where mutant Halloween pumpkins are preparing to take over the Earth. ScreenStar was on the line last week when Rogen talked to reporters about Mutant Pumpkins. Rogen -- the star of Freaks and Geeks (1999-2000), Knocked Up (2007), Superbad (2007), Horton Hears a Who! »

Chicago – A lot of classic TV comedies are often pointed to as being “ahead of their time”. The quirky, weird, and memorable “It’s Garry Shandling Show” wasn’t really ahead of its time because there’s nothing quite like it on the air. The groundbreaking cult classic is now available in a gorgeous 16-disc set from Shout Factory and it’s just what Shandling fans deserve.
DVD Rating: 4.5/5.0
Between his stint as the heir apparent to Johnny Carson (Shandling guest hosted “The Tonight Show” an incredible number of times) and the pioneering television he would do on one of the best sitcoms of all time, “The Larry Sanders Show,” there was “It’s Garry Shandling Show,” which ran for 72 episodes from 1986 to 1990. The program was the first ever broadcast on Showtime and would later be rerun and more widely seen on Fox.
Showtime had given Shandling and his co-writer »

Savant comic impresario Seth Rogen, who portrays B.O.B once again for NBC's "Monsters vs Aliens: Mutant Pumpkins from Outer Space," has had the kind of timing, talent and mentoring that most people would dream of. His career began early, with "Socialist" Jewish parents who nurtured the performer in him and let young Rogen cut class and perform in comedy clubs, just barely out of puberty. Down the road, Judd Apatow spotted Rogen and cast him in "Freaks and Geeks," and the two have collaborated and remained friends ever since. Now, NBC has plans to resurrect B.O.B., the Rogen-voiced monster for their upcoming Halloween DreamWorks animated special, "Monsters vs. Aliens: Mutant Pumpkins from Outer Space," which will air »

Hometown: Tenafly, N.J. Show: Glee For Fans Of: Wicked, High School Musical, Freaks and Geeks Listening to Lea Michele gush over her new role in Glee—Fox’s much-hyped new series about a high-school musical ensemble—is eerily similar to witnessing the jazz-handed optimism of her character Rachel Berry, a teenaged vocalist with a scorchingly sunny disposition. In fact, Michele openly admits that playing the diva-in-training doesn’t require much acting at all. “I definitely have a lot of Rachel in me—her level of projection is pretty much the same in a small classroom as it would be on a Broadway stage,” she says. »
