In 1925, Bénédict Masson, a poet and bookbinder, is secretly in love with Christine, the daughter of the watchmaker Gaillard, a man his neighbors regard as a little deranged. The Gaillards live in the Ile Saint-Louis, in Paris. Benedict does not dare to confess his love to Christine, as he is quite ugly.
