Peter Sarsgaard: The Hollywood Interview

21 December 2009 9:12 AM, PST | The Hollywood Interview | See recent The Hollywood Interview news »

(Peter Sarsgaard in An Education, above.)

by Terry Keefe

(Currently appearing in this month's Venice Magazine.)

Like a seal of approval, it’s always a good sign of a film’s merit to see Peter Sarsgaard in the opening credits, because he chooses his projects well, whether it has been in a leading or supporting role. For a few years now, he has been in a strong enough career position that he could opt only to play leads, even if those were in smaller films, but from his film choices, he has also clearly been more interested in the quality of role, and not necessarily the size of the part, or the paycheck. As Mark, the uniquely resourceful slacker best friend of Zach Braff in Garden State, and as Clyde Martin, the protégé in Kinsey, and in his portrayal of real-life New Republic editor Charles Lane in Shattered Glass, and »

Golden Globe picks help sort out Oscar prospects

14 December 2009 1:20 PM, PST | Filmicafe | See recent Filmicafe news »

Having 10 best-picture nominees will be something different for the next Academy Awards, but it's nothing new at the Golden Globes. The Globes, whose nominations come out Tuesday morning, have long featured 10 or more best-picture nominees, divided into two categories: best drama and best musical or comedy.Plenty of Globe nominees for musical or comedy have made the best-picture cut at the Academy Awards, some even going on to win the top prize at the Oscars, such as 2002's "Chicago."But the Globe dramatic picks typically are the films that have scored well at the Oscars, where the best-picture category has been doubled from five nominees to 10 for the first time in 66 years. That could make the Globes even more of a bellwether for how Academy Awards nominations will play out Feb. 2, potentially opening the best-picture race to populist lighter films that often get overlooked amid the gloomy fare favored by Oscar voters. »

Monster Movies

11 December 2009 4:07 AM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Glenn here from Stale Popcorn here to discuss one of my favourite films from 2003, Patty Jenkins' Monster. Earlier this year when Courtney Hunt's Frozen River was released here in Australia I wrote in my review that It's a shame that Courtney Hunt's Frozen River is so good. It's unfortunate because now I will most likely be incredibly disappointed when this debut director falls between the cracks of the lead performance she helped create. I then went on to cite Boys Don't Cry's Kimberley Pierce (9 years between films) and Monster as examples.

Patty Jenkins has yet to make a second film after her Monster debut and there has never even been any word on her wanting to make another film. That is such a shame since she brought such fascinating sense of place to the Aileen Wuornos film and her twists on the idea of "American Gothic »

Senors Gilbert, Hemmings and Infante

1836 W.S. Gilbert of 'Gilbert & Sullivan' legend. If you've never seen Mike Leigh's exceptional biopic of this creative giant, Topsy-Turvy, drop everything right now and do so.

The producers behind great queer-themed films like Boys Don't Cry and Hedwig and the Angry Inch are working with lesbian comic artist Ariel Schrag on the movie adaptation of her book, Potential. Killer Films (which is home to out producer Christine Vachon) are working with Ariel (who also used to write for The L Word) to create the film version of the 2000 comic/graphic novel, which chronicled her life as an out lesbian in the eleventh grade.

Queer writer and Sister Spit creator Michelle Tea posted an interview with Ariel on the Sfmoma blog today, giving us some insight into what's going on with the production of Potential. Ariel told Tea, "It’s moving along! We just got a great new producer, Jamin O’Brien. Rose Troche is directing and she’s amazing. I love working with her. We’re hoping to shoot this spring."

Swank: '90210 firing boosted career'

8 November 2009 3:50 PM, PST | digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news »

Hilary Swank has reportedly said that being fired from Beverly Hills 90210 boosted her career. The Amelia star, who appeared on the eighth season of the Us teen drama, insisted that she would not be where she is today if she had not been axed from the cast, Contactmusic reports. The 35-year-old said: "Being fired from Beverly Hills 90210 was most definitely a milestone because two months later I got Boys Don't Cry. "But at the time I was devastated because I thought, 'Wow, I'm not even a good enough actress to be in 90210, the eighth season, when it wasn't even a hit anymore!'." Swank added: "I'm definitely spiritual. I wasn't (more) »

Hilary Swank: Learning to fly is like reading a book

4 November 2009 1:17 AM, PST | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Hilary Swank says learning to fly is like reading a book.

The actress took piloting lessons to prepare for her role as famous aviator Amelia Earhart in upcoming movie 'Amelia', and says the experience of trying a new skill transported her back to childhood.

Hilary said: "Putting my hands on the wheel for the first time was a rush. After a certain age, there's not many firsts you experience in your life, so learning to fly reminded me of the childlike feeling of exhilaration when you first ride a bike or read a book."

Hilary, 35, was disappointed to be banned by film bosses from completing her full pilot training and plans to continue working towards her license in future - even though she struggled to get to grips with some elements of the course.

She explained to The Scotsman newspaper: "I'd like to get my licence and continue »

'Amelia,' Hilary Swank: Finding a movie role to fit the face

30 October 2009 3:38 PM, PDT | EW.com - The Movie Critics | See recent EW.com - The Movie Critics news »

Hilary Swank plays the legendary aviator Amelia Earhart in Amelia. And although, as I said in my review, the movie is earthbound, the choice of Swank in the title role demonstrates sky-clear thinking. (Okay, that's enough of the windblown aeronautical metaphors.) Physically, the two are twins, and not just because Swank has been coiffed in Earhart's striking, trademark, short-haired tousle, a variation on Winnie the Pooh's Christopher Robin. Rather, both women project a seductive androgyny-a boyishness that nevertheless leaves no doubt about the sexuality of the woman wearing the trousers. True, Swank first found fame as a girl living as »

Swank Saved Pet's Life In South Africa

26 October 2009 6:36 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Oscar winner Hilary Swank's adopted dog Karoo was literally rotting from the inside out when the actress found her on the streets of South Africa - and saved her life.

The Boys Don't Cry star was shooting in The Karoo, South Africa when she took a shine to a local stray who followed her around the set - and she decided to make sure she was Ok before she left the country.

Convinced someone was looking after the dog - because she looked well fed, Swank was stunned when she learned the mutt was actually close to death.

She says, "I took her to the vet and the vet said..., 'She's actually fat because she's full of worms'.

"She had so many fleas on her they said that they should have sucked all her blood out; they couldn't believe it... She had seven ticks in one ear and six in the other.

"They said, 'If you don't take this dog, she will certainly not make it.'"

Swank took the dog home with her and added another rescued pet, Roomie, last year.

She adds, "They bring a lot of joy to my life."

The actress' love of strays will come into full effect this holiday season - she has signed on as a celebrity spokesperson for Iams Home For The Holidays campaign, and is urging potential pet owners to adopt animals this Christmas.

She explains, "There are eight million animals that need homes and about six million of them get put to sleep every year." »

Interview: Hilary Swank And Mira Nair On Female Power And Amelia

26 October 2009 9:58 AM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Historical figures like Amelia Earhart are hard to come by-- a woman who bucked the trends of her time by wearing pants and refusing to marry until her 30s, who wasn't just a pioneer in the field of aviation, but was committed to helping other women follow in her footsteps. Then again, directors like Mira Nair and actresses like Hilary Swank are hard to come by too. Nair is one of few female directors working consistently with big budgets and stars, while Swank has made her career playing tough women like Million Dollar Baby's Maggie Fitzgerald, or tackling tricky roles like Brandon Teena in Boys Don't Cry. Suffice it to say that the pair were as excited as can be to tackle the iconoclastic Earhart, delving deep into her history and her psyche to present a portrait of the woman from the inside, not as a cultural figure but »

Never say never. "A lot of people say, 'You haven't really done a superhero type movie... why don't you do that kind of movie? It's not that I don't want to, I just haven't had that opportunity." Movie Review - 'Amelia'

22 October 2009 11:26 PM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

Amelia

Starring Hilary Swank, Richard Gere, and Ewan McGregor

Directed by Mira Nair

Rated PG

Memorable only for the opportunity it has missed, Amelia manages to tell us everything about Amelia Earhart except what we might want to know. A great film can take the unvarnished details of an ordinary life and make them fascinating, so how can a movie about a woman so intersting and influential be so damn boring?

The film never goes deeper than the things you understand before you buy your ticket: It's the story of Amelia Earhart, who died trying to become the first person to fly around the world. Hilary Swank looks a lot like the character she's portraying.

The shame is that Swank is twice an Oscar winner, and was fantastic on both occasions (Boys Don't Cry, Million Dollar Baby). Almost without exception, though, Swank has been only passable or worse in her other films. »

Amelia

What can you say about a woman who vanishes in proverbial thin air? The mysteries about the remarkable Amelia Earhart and her disappearance in 1937 with her navigator Fred Noonan (Christopher Eggleston) over the Pacific Ocean persist and make ideal fodder for biographies and biopics. In Amelia, the new movie directed by Mira Nair, Hilary Swank stars sporting a boyish haircut that reminds us of her Oscar winning role in Boys Don't Cry. Earhart was the ideal and most idealized woman of her time, a role model for young aviatrixes, and women everywhere. When asked for advice, she says, Don't let anyone turn you around, a great message for anyone gifted with her passion. Aside from flying, she also has a knack for finding wonderful, enabling men: her husband George Putnam (Richard Gere, still a heartthrob with silver hair) and »

Hilary Swank and Mira Nair Get Airborne with Amelia

21 October 2009 10:11 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Hilary Swank has won two Best Actress Oscars over the past decade and now she could be gunning for a third with her performance in Amelia, which opens in theaters nationwide on October 23. Swank and her director, Mira Nair, recently held a press conference discussing this biopic of famed aviatrix Amelia Earhart and here's what Swank and Nair had to say.

When you're making the film where we, in effect, known the end-- or sort of know the end. So, that you have to build-- create a sense of dramatic tension. What did you two talk about how that dramatic tension should be built? And-- and that-- in what ways you developed the-- the arc or the rhythm of it.

Hilary Swank: Well, you think you know how it ended. You have to go see it (Laughter) to see if really ends the way you think it ended. 'Cause there's a lot of theories, »

Discuss:[p]The Mystery of Swank

21 October 2009 3:00 AM, PDT | TribecaFilm.com | See recent Tribeca Film news »

If you were not a fan of Beverly Hills 90210 or the later Karate Kid installments, then it's likely you were first introduced to Hilary Swank in 1999 via her breakthrough role in Kimberly Peirce's Boys Don't Cry. For her efforts as Brandon Teena, the transgendered teen tragically misunderstood by a small Nebraska town, Swank won her first Best Actress Oscar, at the ripe old age of 24. Five years later, Swank again gave a knockout (sorry!) performance in Million Dollar Baby, Clint Eastwood's tearjerker about a female boxer with heart and determination. Defying all odds, Swank took home her second Oscar (at 29) for her brave and physical portrayal of Maggie Fitzgerald. Unfortunately for Swank, this double win before the age of 30 seems to have engendered a love-her-or-hate-her dichotomy that lingers today. Ask anyone, 'What do you think of Hilary Swank?' Chances are, they will not be lukewarm. For »

Swank Upsets Psychologist With Nudity Remarks

19 October 2009 3:01 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Hilary Swank has sparked a storm of controversy in the U.S. by confessing she's often nude in front of her boyfriend's six-year-old son in a new magazine article.

The actress tells the new Marie Claire that she never wears anything to bed and that means her lover's kid often sees her naked, prompting top psychologists to urge the Oscar winner to cover up.

In the article, Swank says, "My boyfriend's son is six years old, and you wonder at what age you should stop walking around nude. Every morning he comes into the bedroom, and you're just nude. But he doesn't look twice; he doesn't think about it yet."

Qualifying her Marie Claire remarks during a TV interview on Monday morning, the Boys Don't Cry star added, "I think every family's different and you have to know what's right for you and your family."

But top psychologists don't agree - Dr. Jeff Cardere says, "Hilary, you're not this child's mum. What if things don't work out with your present boyfriend...? Who knows what might happen in the future; what his psycho-sexual adjustment may be. It's not a good thing." »

Sarsgaard Heartbroken By Valentine's Day Snub

Actor Peter Sarsgaard once had his heart broken after driving from New York to North Carolina to surprise a girlfriend on Valentine's Day.

Now happily married to actress Maggie Gyllenhaal, the Boys Don't Cry star recalls presenting a former love with a short story he had written for her only to discover she'd met someone else.

The actor tells WENN, "I was at Bard College. It was around eight o'clock at night and Valentine's Day was the next day. I drove all the way down to the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill through the night and arrived in the morning.

"I showed up on this girl's front step and I had written a short story to read to her, which was slightly ripped off from another writer.

"A guy who played for Unc Chapel Hill was there with her; he was a very large gentleman and that was her new boyfriend.

"I took off and went to a Tears For Fears concert and wept all the way through it." »
