Alamo programmers’ Top 10 of ‘09…plus Top 20 of the Decade!

5 January 2010 3:38 PM, PST | OriginalAlamo.com | See recent AlamoDrafthouseCinema news »

The picture to the left has nothing to do with anything released in the last ten years, but it is from a movie.

Here in the Alamo programming office, movies are a big deal. We each watch approximately 215 movies per day, seven days a week, no holidays.

It’s a tough job…especially when it comes time to narrow down our favorites at the end of each year. It’s even more difficult to figure out what the best 20 films were in the past decade. But we do it all for you.

The lists below represent the most powerful and/or entertaining films of 2009, plus the finest we’ve seen since Y2K destroyed civilization. Take a look, disagree, get furious and attack us on the street.

Warning: We’ve got switchblades.

Don’s Top 10 of 2009

The most difficult part of creating Top 10 lists for me is the top and the bottom of the list. For a majority of the calendar year, Sam Rockwell and Moon were alone in solitary seclusion safely at the top of my list and I really didn’t expect anything, not even the latest Wes Anderson vehicle, to dislodge it. But then I saw Fantastic Mr. Fox and I immediately realized that there was no longer any chance for Moon to remain at the top of my list. (Sam Rockwell still deserves to be awarded Best Actor for his transcendental performance in Moon though.) Toward the bottom of the list, it was difficult to not have any space left for other fantastic 2009 films such as Goodbye Solo, The Road and Paper Heart. It is worth nothing that I purposely did not include films that were not released theatrically in Austin, Texas during 2009 (The White Ribbon, »

tMF Top 50: Best Movies of the 2000s (10-1)

2 January 2010 9:32 PM, PST | The Movie Fanatic | See recent The Movie Fanatic news »

We finally made it.  The best of the best.  Before we get to the top ten best films of the decade, take a minute to review the rest of the list:

#50-41 | #40-31 | #30-21 | #20-11

These are the films that mean the most to me. They have kept me up at night causing me to ponder endlessly about them, its characters, its themes and its mood: What was it that made feel (enter whatever emotion)? They successfully have managed to penetrate my body, settling there ever since I first viewed them and will probably be established within me for the rest of my life. I also believe they helped shape the decade in film by bringing new dimensions to historic genres. This decade alone allowed us, encouraged us and eventually forced us to view romance, relationships, corruption, greed, dreams and hope in a fashion that movie goers never perceived prior to it. »
