Reed’s Bargain Bin: Dark Assassin / The Fifth Commandment

11 December 2009 6:36 AM, PST | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Reed’s Bargain Bin [1] is a recurring column where Reed Farrington tells us about a movie he bought for under $5, and whether or not he regrets the purchase. For those who think that the best martial arts films are the ones that star actual martial artists, I present to you two films that defy this categorization: Dark Assassin (2006) and The Fifth Commandment (2008). I wasn’t even going to bother reviewing these two films, but after watching the behind-the-scenes documentaries on each DVD, I found out that much effort and perseverance were involved in getting these films made. So I thought I would at least offer these films some recognition even though I won’t have many good things to say about them. However, discussing these films might be of some interest. And with the recent release of Ninja Assassin, I thought there might be an interest in assassin movies. These »

December’s edition of Alliance Magazine includes interviews with two of the rising stars of the world of emerging philanthropy – actors Jet Li, star of Romeo Must Die and Hero, and Olga Kurylenko, best known for her role as Camille in James Bond film Quantum of Solace.

In an interview with Alliance, Jet Li outlines the unique philanthropic model of his One Foundation, and gives his thoughts on how grassroots efforts can complement government aid; also discussing how his near-death experience during the 2004 tsunami inspired his mission. “The experience of surviving the chaos and witnessing the devastation caused by this natural disaster has changed me forever”, Li tells Alliance.

Li Finished With Hollywood, for Now

25 August 2009 9:30 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Apparently, Jet Li has kicked enough butt stateside, and is going back to Hong Kong to try his hand at drama.

Li is due to begin shooting the non-kung fu movie, which will arrive in theatres next year. According to Zhang Hongyan, publicist for the Hong Kong-based Edko Film, the project has tentatively been titled "Ocean Paradise".

"It's a movie that's very different from his previous movies," Zhang told The Chengdu Shangbao, a Chinese newspaper, and confirmed Li would not fight in the film. More details about Ocean Paradise will be made available at an official news conference in Beijing on Wednesday.

Li’s recent three movies have been big-budget Hollywood productions: The Forbidden Kingdom, in which the martial artist/actor worked on-screen with Jackie Chan; The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, which featured state-of-the-art special effects; and the upcoming Sylvester Stallone-helmed The Expendables.

Martial artist-turned-actor Jet Li is set to thrill audiences in his native China - he is returning to his roots following a series of Hollywood productions.

Li first made his name in the Hong Kong film industry before moving on to Hollywood, where he landed starring roles in Lethal Weapon 4, Romeo Must Die, and Kiss of the Dragon.

His success overseas snowballed and his last three films - The Forbidden Kingdom, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, and upcoming action thriller The Expendables - have all been U.S. productions.

But according to The Chengdu Shangbao newspaper, the 46 year old's next movie will be Chinese-language film Ocean Paradise, shot by an up-and-coming director.

And Li will move even further away from his traditional roles - the film, due to be released next year, will reportedly not feature him in any fight scenes. »

Aaliyah: Remembering Her Legacy Eight Years On

On the eighth anniversary of her untimely death, we look back on her accomplishments and wonder what might have been.

One of the last hits from Aaliyah's all-too-brief career was the track "More Than a Woman," released posthumously from her self-titled third LP.

The song and the video both showcased Aaliyah Dana Haughton, then 22, at her finest: flirty, reserved, sultry and, most importantly, it left listeners and viewers with a palpable sense that there was indeed more to come from this talented artist. Unfortunately, her life was tragically cut short when a plane carrying her and her entourage crashed shortly after takeoff. Her death — which occurred exactly eight years ago — still feels like it happened entirely too soon.

A Proper Trailer For Thanapon Maliwan’s The Sanctuary

9 May 2009 3:42 PM, PDT | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

[Updated with new poster and much higher quality trailer.]

Thanapon Maliwan’s The Sanctuary is a film that we’ve been tracking here for a good while now.  Maliwan rose to attention as one of the directors in the Pechpanna Productions stable, the Thai action outfit where both Panna Rittikrai and Tony Jaa got their starts, Maliwan directing both Jaa and his mentor is at least one early pre-Ong Bak film together.  And then there’s star Mike B, a Thai stunt man who was one of the key stunt performers in Ong Bak who Maliwan has been grooming for stardom for a little while.

This particular project began life as Dead End before finance troubles forced it to be suspended for a while and Maliwan and Mike B went off and made inconsistent action-comedy Brave instead.  That project out of the way the materials from Dead End were reworked and redeveloped and the project re-launched as The Sanctuary »

The One - Blu-ray Review

1 April 2009 7:43 AM, PDT | Monsters and Critics | See recent Monsters and Critics news »

A film I'm annoyed to announce that I've seen three times, 'The One', once positioned as a star vehicle for Jet Li riding on his initial success of 'Romeo Must Die' is a science-fiction action film devoid of both effective sci-fi ideas and effective action. With half-baked ideas (conjured up by co-screenwriters James Wong and Glen Morgan with Wong directing) The One is obviously trying to ride on the coattails of 'The Matrix' with a little 'Highlander' thrown in. Trying to establish a sci-fi universe so complex that no one will notice it doesn't make a damn bit of sense, clunky opening exposition lets us know that there are many parallel universes, each housing separate but parallel human »

Movie Review - 'Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li'

27 February 2009 1:42 AM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun- Li

Starring Kristin Kreuk, Neal McDonough, and Chris Klein

Directed by Andrzej Bartkowiak

Rated PG-13

Back in the early 1990s, there was a video game called Street Fighter. It was one of the first arcade games that let you choose the character you wanted to play, and each fighter in the game had different strengths and weaknesses.

Each combatant had different moves, too, which meant that as a player, you'd have invest probably hundreds of dollars mastering the specific configuration of buttons, joystick directions and timing crucial to making those moves work.

Street Fighter was therefore an enormous success. Some players wanted to play the beasts with superhuman strength, and others wanted to go the more traditional, charismatic martial arts hero route. You could play villains, too. The game was so popular that it spawned a movie starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, which was nowhere near as popular. »

In an interview asking about whether or not they will come back for a second movie, stars from Kristin Kreuk to Black Eyed Peas' Taboo were quick to give thumbs up for the sequel.

"I totally would love to go in there and work on some more skills," Kreuk, the actress who plays Chun-Li said of possible sequel. "I loved training; it was so much fun." Showing similar interest, Balrog's depicter Michael Clarke Duncan went straight saying, "Absolutely," adding that people want to see the same actor for a sequel. "Because once you see a movie with these characters, you don' t want to see any other actors but them playing those characters. It's kinda hard to »

Four More Action-Packed Clips From 'Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li'

19 February 2009 8:31 PM, PST | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

"Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li" has teased out more action footage with the outing of four fresh clips. These four clips give more on the film's storyline than the previous ones. Three of the clips focus on the grown-up Chun-Li, played by Kristin Kreuk, as she battles the baddies, whereas the other clip, "House Warming Gift", presents young Chun-Li as she watches her father being beaten down by Michael Clarke Duncan's Balrog.

In "Learn Some Manners", Chun-Li pins a man on his desk after he tries to avoid answering her question. After getting the information she needed, she tells him that he needs to learn some manners and never puts his hand on a lady. Counting down to the theatrical release of "Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li", four new clips from the live-action adaptation have been unveiled. With the running time varying from 46 seconds to one minute, the clips expose both the action sequences as well as bits of the storyline.

Call me crazy, but I'm actually looking forward to this - even more than Dragonball! Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li hits theaters in two more weeks, in case you forgot, and promises to be at least entertaining, right? We'll find out in a couple of weeks if that's the case. Right now I'm just crossing my fingers and hoping for the best. Although I'm very curious why we haven't seen another trailer or any new footage from this yet. And now Fox releases their final batch of photos? Now I'm officially nervous, which I have been all along, but this could just suck completely and I don't want it to! Check out the photos. Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li is directed by ex-cinematographer Andrzej Bartkowiak, who directed Romeo Must Die, Exit Wounds, Cradle 2 the Grave, and Doom previously. Check This Out: Another, Better Street Fighter Movie Poster

21 January 2009 8:22 PM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

We were just sent a brand new poster for Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li - and considering the last two posters they've revealed have been pretty bad, I think most people will be quite happy to see this one. Maybe? Besides the face of Kristin Kreuk, this also features some sort of Phantom of the Opera looking guy combined with Wolverine. I know it's the character of Vega, but still, it seems like they're trying to steal some of the X-Men Origins: Wolverine hype. I doubt this poster will have any impact on the buzz, but it's still cool to see something a bit better. Speaking of which, is anyone even going to see this? Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li is directed by ex-cinematographer Andrzej Bartkowiak, who directed Romeo Must Die, Exit Wounds, Cradle 2 the Grave, and Doom previously. Fight Like A ‘Ninja Assassin’

6 January 2009 10:30 PM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

This is a must watch if you have any interest at all in action films, martial arts, sword combat or parkour. /Film got a hold of a behind-the-scenes video of the fight choreography training for the upcoming Ninja Assassin movie.

The video features the infamous 87 Eleven stunt performing/coordination and martial arts training group who also worked on hit action movies 300, the Bourne films and this year’s Watchmen (hopefully this year). They do amazing work and are becoming more and more involved in some of the biggest action films around.

Ninja Assassin is the story of one of the world’s best assassins, Raizo (played by Korean pop star, Rain) who was trained to kill by a secret organization that later executes his best friend. Naturally, Raizo must avenge his friend’s death and the blood bath ensues.

Official Us Trailer for Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li!

Fox has officially unveiled the Us trailer for Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li on IGN. You've seen it in Japanese, now watch it in English! I don't know why everyone thinks this looks so bad? It's probably the best looking Street Fighter movie we'll ever get, it looks exponentially better than Dragonball, and it stars the extremely gorgeous Kristin Kreuk. What more could you ask for?! To top it all off, Neal McDonough is one of my favorite actors and as the villain M. Bison I have a feeling he's going to be one of the best parts. So give it another chance, watch this trailer in English, and try not to be too harsh.
