Reed’s Bargain Bin: Dark Assassin / The Fifth Commandment

11 December 2009 6:36 AM, PST | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Reed’s Bargain Bin [1] is a recurring column where Reed Farrington tells us about a movie he bought for under $5, and whether or not he regrets the purchase. For those who think that the best martial arts films are the ones that star actual martial artists, I present to you two films that defy this categorization: Dark Assassin (2006) and The Fifth Commandment (2008). I wasn’t even going to bother reviewing these two films, but after watching the behind-the-scenes documentaries on each DVD, I found out that much effort and perseverance were involved in getting these films made. So I thought I would at least offer these films some recognition even though I won’t have many good things to say about them. However, discussing these films might be of some interest. And with the recent release of Ninja Assassin, I thought there might be an interest in assassin movies. These »

What Is James Cameron Working On?

9 December 2009 6:11 PM, PST | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Now that his latest labour of love (and shouting at people to do better) is finally over and Avatar is days away from our cinemas, you might think James Cameron would take it easy for a while. But that's not really his style: he's apparently developing another sci-fi script.Okay, so he's probably not jumping straight back into production on another film, but it looks like Cameron will be keeping a few cinematic irons hot while he ponders his next move. Case in point? Production Weekly's report of him overseeing a screenplay from Aliens Vs Predator - Requiem/Shaft/Armageddon writer Shane Salerno. It's described as an "action script of Fox, an 'event' film set in the future." Naturally, speculation will fly, but it doesn't necessarily sound like Battle Angel Alita, which Cameron has been slowly designing alongside Avatar, nor does it point to any of his other announced projects. »

James Cameron Developing another Futuristic Sci-Fi “Event” Movie; Could It Be Doomsday Protocol?

9 December 2009 3:42 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

It will be interesting to see how the Monday following Avatar’s opening weekend will shape director James Cameron’s future plans, but today Production Weekly tweeted that Cameron “is developing a Shane Salerno-scripted sci-fi action script for Fox, described as an ‘event’ film set in the future.”  For those who don’t know, Salerno is credited with writing the remake of Shaft and Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem.

/Film did some digging and found a Hollywood Reporter story from last year reporting that Fox had picked up a sci-fi script from Salerno for a movie called Doomsday Protocol which had the following description:

An epic science fiction adventure in the vein of “The Seven Samurai” involving a group of aliens and humans with various abilities who are brought together to save Earth.

Yeah, that doesn’t sound like something Cameron would be interested in.  Must be a different futuristic sci-fi “event” movie. »

James Cameron is Working on Another Sci-Fi Action Movie?

9 December 2009 1:03 PM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Yes, I know, there are only 9 days left until James Cameron's Avatar finally hits theaters, so this may be part of the big hype machine, but there could be some truth to it. Late last night, Production Weekly posted a rather interesting Twitter stating simply: "James Cameron is developing a Shane Salerno-scripted sci-fi action script for Fox, described as an 'event' film set in the future." Salerno previously wrote Armageddon, Shaft, and Avp: Requiem and has a lot of other scripts floating around. Could this really be Cameron's next project? Or is it just another project that he's setting up following Avatar? What else does he have lined up? We're probably going to be hearing a lot about what Cameron's planning "next" after Avatar over the next few months. Of course there's the inevitable Avatar sequel, which we may or may not see depending on what happens on December 18th. »

James Cameron Prepping His Next Epic at Fox with Salerno?

9 December 2009 9:50 AM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

The Twitter feed for Production Weekly has become a hot bed of mini movie updates over the past year and most often times I ignore it quite simply because taking the time to turn a 140 character or less production note into a full post is a waste of time, but last night an interesting detail was announced that can be expanded upon.

The update said James Cameron is developing a Shane Salerno-scripted sci-fi action script for Fox, described as an "event" film set in the future. This, of course, has people scratching their heads wondering what it could be. Well, the only way to figure that out is to see what Shane Salerno has been up to, which leads us to this year-old story.

Back in September 2008, The Hollywood Reporter said Fox has picked up Doomsday Protocol in a seven figure deal, an original spec by Shane Salerno. Plot »

James Cameron Developing Futuristic Sci-Fi Action Film

9 December 2009 8:30 AM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Production Weekly is reporting that "James Cameron is developing a Shane Salerno-scripted sci-fi action script for Fox, described as an 'event' film set in the future." No other details are available, but most people think the project might be Doomsday Protocol, a film which was announced last year. James Cameron wasn't mentioned in the initial The Hollywood Reporter announcement, which included the following plot details: "Plot details are being kept under wraps, but it is known to be an epic science fiction adventure in the vein of The Seven Samurai involving a group of aliens and humans with various abilities who are brought together to save Earth." In June 2009, it was mentioned in Variety that Salerno was developing a project for Cameron, but no one connected the dots. Shane Salerno, whose credits include Avpr: Aliens vs Predator - Requiem, Ghost Rider, Shaft and Armageddon, crafted the screenplay on spec, »

Black Dynamite Original Motion Picture Score

8 December 2009 6:33 PM, PST | Latemag.com/film | See recent LateFilmFull news »

In 1971 African American film director Melvin Van Peebles had a Richard Pryor moment. Fed up with presenting an acceptable version of blackness for The Man he figured it was time for something more confrontational. Something that would have the early 70's audience leaving the theatre thinking 'fuck yeah'. Essentially, a film that would stick it to The Man. Studios however where unlikely to want to fund such an outing. Having convinced a then relativity unknown group called Earth, Wind and Fire to record a soundtrack, Melvin took the innovative move of releasing the soundtrack in advance of the movie. Not only did this raise capital it also promoted the movie in a way his non existent marketing budget would not have allowed. The film was Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song. While arguably not Blaxsploitation as such itself, it paved the way for the birth of the genre. There was a market for confrontational, »

Clifton Collins Jr. Talks Boondock Saints II, The Experiment, Brothers and More

1 October 2009 9:05 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

The chameleonic character actor talks about the upcoming films on his growing film slate

If you couldn't tell from the first part of my interview with Clifton Collins Jr., (or the interview before that), I'm a pretty damn big fan of the guy, and his work. The guy is a workaholic, a terrific actor and one of the honest-to-God nicest dudes I've met during my tenure in Hollywood. I know it sounds like I'm on his payroll or something, but it's quite rare out here to meet such a genuine guy in the biz and it's great to see him have the kind of amazing year he's had so far... a year that isn't even close to being over. After talking about his new small-screen gig on Southland, we started to talk about all the new films he has coming out before year's end, and the new music video that »

Listen up, you turkeys! A new trailer for blaxploitation spoof 'Black Dynamite' just hit town

10 September 2009 9:15 AM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Who's the private dick that's a sex machine to all the chicks? Well, as all blaxploitation fans know, that would be Shaft (damn right!), the cool-as-they-come detective Richard Roundtree originally portrayed in the 1971 movie of the same name. But the description pretty much also applies to the titular character in the new blaxploitation spoof Black Dynamite, a lady-attracting, drug gang-battling, ex-cia agent played by, at least according to the trailer below, "all-star running back Ferrante Jones." In fact, the role of Mr Dynamite is actually essayed by actor and martial arts expert Michael Jai White, and the clip's Grindhouse-style attention to period detail (it claims that the film is also being presented in something called "cinemaphonic quadrovision") is just one of its many charms. (Others include an encouraging number of funny lines and the fact that at times it actually looks like a more competently put-together piece of work than »

What's the most fashionably influential movie of all time?

9 September 2009 4:00 AM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Turner Classic Movies is honoring New York's Fashion Week with a list of the films it has deemed the most sartorially influential of all time. First, a look at their Top 15 (in chronological order): Pandora's Box (1929) Letty Lynton (1932) It Happened One Night (1934) Pat and Mike (1952) Rear Window (1954) Rebel Without a Cause (1955) And God Created Woman (1956) Auntie Mame (1958) Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961) Bonnie and Clyde (1967) The Thomas Crown Affair (1968) Shaft (1971) Annie Hall (1977) Saturday Night Fever (1977) Flashdance (1983) Most notable is the '50s- and '60s-heavy lineup -- which perhaps makes some sense, as films were likely the dominant way style was passed from Hollywood to the masses (as opposed to the TV, Us Weekly and internet of today). And there's no arguing with the likes of Breakfast at Tiffany's (which I would deem the most fashionable movie of all time), Bonnie and Clyde, Shaft, Annie Hall, Saturday Night Fever, and Flashdance. »

9 Ways To Survive a Michael Myers Attack

27 August 2009 6:58 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

If there is one roving menace that still haunts the world in which we live, it is the threat of possible attack from Michael Myers. There came a time when we at least knew what and when to expect such an event, bracing ourselves each All Hallow's Eve for what seemed like an indestructible killing machine. Oftentimes we'd watch helpless as our babysitter, our teenaged sons, our fornicating friends were all shuffled off this mortal coil by the Shatner-faced villain and yet sometimes we felt the bravery to fight back. Now, we can't even be sure when he'll attack since he's sneaking up on us at the end of August instead of waiting until the end of October. He's getting sneakier, and that means we have to become even smarter. So, if you want to avoid being stabbed to death, electrocuted violently or thrown out of a window, take heed and follow these 9 Ways to Survive a »

Toronto After Dark 2009: Black Dynamite

17 August 2009 7:05 AM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Black Dynamite Directed by Scott Sanders Although director Scott Sanders' Black Dynamite is being touted as a brazen spoof of 70's blaxploitation films, its tone is less 'spoof ' than it is simply tongue-in-cheek.  Yes, there are pimps, pushers, ho's, nunchucks, polyester suits and 8-track tapes, but Sanders does not rely on these conventions to be the butt of the joke.  What makes Black Dynamite unabashedly funny are the super-machismo one-liners and wildly absurd action sequences. After The Man murders his brother, pumps heroin into the local orphanage and pours tainted malt liquor in the neighborhood, ex-cia agent Black Dynamite (Michael Jai White) takes his fight from the ghetto to the White House.  If it sounds like there's a lot going on in Black Dynamite, that's because co-writers White and Byron Minns have amusingly amalgamated every conspiracy or plot twist you might find in the sub-genre., and like any Bond film, »

Back Catalogue #3: Blue Underground

17 July 2009 12:50 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Horror movies really are like monsters. Just when you think they’re dead they reappear out of nowhere despite the passage of time and the vagaries of the marketplace and critics pens. Great ones have the power to lift you up out of the ordinary world and leave you shaking in disgust, fear, or overwhelmed by dread or a sense of displacement. That’s the reason I creep through the vaults of any studio that will let me in.  I hadn’t seen any of these Blue Underground titles before and when they told me that five out of six of the titles I had asked to write about were available I was excited to have the chance to check them out.

First up was Anguish by acclaimed art house director Bigas Luna. Besides the Luna pedigree this film also boasted the talents of a young but still instantly recognizable »

Christian Bale's Rollercoaster Career

4 July 2009 7:02 AM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

From Pacman to Public Enemies, he's had more ups and downs than most other actors of his generation. Christian Bale has careened between extreme highs and deep lows, in the view of the folks at MovieFill, and they decided that a rollercoaster was the most apt visual metaphor for his career. A reduced-size version can be seen above.

They squeeze most of his films into the chart, though they left out a few. Before his sensational role in Mary Harron's American Psycho, he was very appealing in Metroland and got good notices in Todd Haynes' Velvet Goldmine; pre-Batman Begins / The Dark Knight, he was fun to watch as a frisky villain in John Singleton's Shaft and an uptight, would-be psychiatrist in Laurel Canyon. I don't agree with every notation in the chart. Harsh Times, for example, is cited as one of his "lows," but Bale was riveting. »
