12 Action Movies Set During Christmas Season

24 December 2009 11:08 PM, PST | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

Christmas is supposed to be a time a giving, peace and good will towards man. But in Hollywood, its also a time for death, destruction and nearly every form of mayhem.  Throughout the 80's 90's and (soon to be history) 00's more and more action films seem to take place during “the most wonderful time of the year”. Whether it be a heist, monster invasion or assault by pirates, so much onscreen action occurs on this jolly day that it's a miracle ole Saint Nick isn't killed in the crossfire. Here are just a few action films where Christmas is actually the last thing on the minds of characters fighting for their lives.Batman Returns (1992) Set during the Christmas season where a tree lighting ceremony in Gotham City serves as a battleground for the struggle between Batman (Michael Keaton), The Penguin (Danny DeVito) and Catwoman (Michelle Pfeiffer). Geek Deal: Three Blu-Ray Movie Packs for $25

21 November 2009 1:39 PM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Amazon has some awesome deals on some select three Blu-Ray movie packs. Each of the listed packs below is only $24.99 each, and also comes with $5 credit towards select Amazon on-demand TV-Shows. That's basically $8.33 for each Blu-ray disc. Action Collection: Jumper, Transporter, Transports 2 Action Hero Collection: The Day After Tomorrow, I, Robot, The Terminator Hard Action Collection: Hitman, Street Kings, Man on Fire War Hero Collection: Behind Enemy Lines, Patton, Rescue Dawn Funny Guy Collection: Napoleon Dynamite, Office Space, Young Frankenstein Jock Collection: Dodgeball, Hoosiers, Rocky I always find it amusing how these three packs are grouped. They usually contain one or two good movies and a film you'd never ever buy. But at the price, it's probably still worth it for the two movies you do like. The Funny Guy Collection is probably the one exception, unless you're one of those people that hated Napoleon. »

Producer Wyck Godfrey plays an instrumental role in bringing the film phenomenon "Twilight" to theaters. His background producing feature films, which range from "Behind Enemy Lines" to "When a Stranger Calls" prepared him for overseeing production on this blockbuster franchise. Two weeks before the highly anticipated release of "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" Godfrey sat down with MakingOf to share the decision behind bringing different directorial styles to each film, his close collaboration with director Chris Weitz and the team's focus on satisfying the film's rabid fans.

'Queen & Country': All the single action heroines get your hands up

24 August 2009 9:21 AM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Female-driven action movie franchises are not, as they say, growing on trees in Hollywood. You can literally count them on one hand: Alien, Lara Croft, Terminator (at least until they became about Sarah Connor's whelp), Resident Evil. Conventional wisdom states that men won't go see action flicks driven by female characters and women want movies in which either the newest iteration of Meg Ryan pads around in slippers or Robert Pattinson sweeps their proxy off her feet. Which is all patently bollocks, and which makes the recent Queen & Country news -- that Fox has hired writer Ryan Condal to adapt the blistering comics series described somewhat simply as "a female version of The Bourne Identity" -- so encouraging. Queen & Country, if you don't know, is a comic book series written by Greg Rucka (who also wrote the Antarctic potboiler Whiteout, the adaptation of which is hitting theaters on Sept. 11) which »

First look at "Defying Gravity," a "'Grey's Anatomy' in space"

10 July 2009 3:01 PM, PDT | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

I've been a fan of women in space movies ever since I watched Kate Capshaw and Lea Thompson in Space Camp as a kid. Although I've never gotten into the Star Trek or Star Wars franchises too much, because they rarely give women leadership roles — except for Star Trek: Voyager, which I've seen all seven seasons of — and I've only watched some of the Battlestar Galactica episodes, I enjoyed Jodie Foster's Contact (at least the first half), and Lori and I both loved the 2002 Showtime series Odyssey Five.

So I was excited to hear about the new space drama coming to America (and Canada, Germany, and the U.K.).

Last week, ABC purchased 13 episodes of the new Canadian sci-fi drama Defying Gravity, which has this description, "In the near future, eight astronauts from five countries (four women and four men) undertake a mysterious six-year international space mission covering thirteen billion kilometers. »

New: U.S. Blu-ray releases for this week (12/5)

15 May 2009 9:47 AM, PDT | The Cinema Post | See recent The Cinema Post news »

There is a bumper edition of new releases this week on the Blu-ray format, although there isn’t a great deal of discs that we’d consider to be “must have” out of the bunch. It is however a great week again for Trekkies, as the Original Motion Picture Collection is now available featuring all 6 films in the series. Liam Neeson’s action vehicle “Taken” also hits the shelves, as does “Fargo” a Coen Brothers masterpiece. Also notable for release are “Big”, “The Grudge”, the first season of “CSI” and the utterly dreadful “S. Darko: A Donnie Darko Tale”. Check out our “pick of the week” and links to all of the new releases below.

This week’s pick of the week is a tie. We featured “Fargo” as a pick last week in the UK release list, so we have to stay consistent, but we also feel that “The Good, »

This Week on DVD: Taken, Underworld: Rise of the Lycans, S. Darko

12 May 2009 9:18 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Looks like it's another slow week for DVD releases, but fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it) studios are increasing their Blu-ray output to make up for it. Major discs hitting stores today include Taken (The Extended Edition!) and Underworld: Rise of the Lycans... not so major discs include direct to DVD flicks The Grudge 3 and Donnie Darko sequel S. Darko. On Blu-ray we have Star Trek: Motion Picture Trilogy and Star Trek: Original Motion Picture Collection, a couple of James Bond flicks, Fargo, and The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. See anything worth picking up? Taken [1] (DVD, Blu-ray [2]) Underworld: Rise of the Lycans [3] (DVD, Blu-ray [4]) S. Darko: A Donnie Darko Tale [5] (DVD, Blu-ray [6]) The Grudge 3 [7] Passengers [8] (DVD, Blu-ray [9]) Personal Effects [10] (DVD, Blu-ray [11]) Plague Town [12] (DVD, Blu-ray [13]) Possession (2009) [14] High Hopes [15] Lying [16] Taking Chance [17] Galaxy Quest: Deluxe Edition [18] Wise Blood: Criterion Collection [19] Seth MacFarlane's Cavalcade of Cartoon Comedy [20] (DVD, »

DVD Links: DVD News | Release Dates | New Dvds | Reviews | RSS Feed Two titles you won't see in the release date section below are the Watchmen Director's Cut and the 300 (The Complete Experience) Blu-ray, but both have just been confirmed with July 28 and July 21 release dates respectively. Both updates came too late for this report and will be included on the next one, but a complete write up can be found right here, which includes artwork and special features. Now, for today's releases... Star Trek: Original Motion Picture Collections I am anxiously awaiting my very own copy of the full original crew Star Trek movie series as I only own Wrath of Khan and The Voyage Home on DVD and haven't seen the others in a long, long time. As a matter of fact, I can hardly remember what the other four films are about. Search for Spock is pretty much »

God Dethroned - Passiondale (Musick Review)

27 April 2009 11:13 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

The Netherlands' own God Dethroned have just released their latest full-length album entitled “Passiondale”. The new CD is an amalgamation of melodic death metal and balls-out thrash that marks God Dethroned’s return to the more extreme and furious songwriting style they had a decade ago .

God Dethroned features originator Henri Sattler on Guitars & Vocals, and veteran bassist Henk Zinger. Returning on the drums is Roel Sanders who had played on the “Grand Grimoire” “Bloody Blasphemy” albums, (two of Gd’s finest). Sanders contributes a lot to the faster and more aggressive sound of the new CD, as can be heard in tracks like “Under A Darkening Sky”, “Drowning In Mud”, and “Fallen Empires” where blast-beats and fast double-bass drumming are prominently featured. Also returning to work on the new CD is keyboardist Danny Servaes, who also played on “Grand Grimoire” and “Bloody Blasphemy”. Servaes adds a dark aura to »

Aw Yeah! MGM and WWE to Remake 'Missing in Action'! That Rocks!

8 March 2009 1:33 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Please forgive the feigned enthusiasm of the slug, but really: A remake of Missing in Action? More like a remake of "Generic War Hero Movie Rambo Copycat." But I digress. All things cinematically '80s are making a comeback these days, and with Rambo getting some fresh sequels, it only makes sense that the other guys will start popping their heads out of the foxholes. Yep, according to this rather entertaining blog entry at THR, MGM and World Wrestling Entertainment (that's a guess) are concocting an all-new version of Missing in Action. And no, we're not going back to Vietnam.

Of course this is not WWE's first foray into films: They also gave you See No Evil, The Marine, The Condemned and the upcoming 12 Rounds. Oh, and Behind Enemy Lines 3: Colombia. (Any movie with a wrestler in it, basically.) Our source also indicates that the Mia remake will be »
