David Duchovny found his second great role in this sly, funny and startlingly frank adventures of a cultish writer in creative block

It took David Duchovny a while to find the perfect role after The X Files, but a decade on he has struck gold again, as tormented writer Hank Moody. The suspicion that he was perfectly cast as the laconic, irresistibly attractive lead in comedy-drama Californication was only reinforced when, after winning a Golden Globe last year for his performance in the first season, the actor promptly announced he was seeking clinical treatment for sex addiction.

Now midway through its third season in the Us, Californication is the tale of a cultish author struggling with a mid-career creative block, a disorienting move from New York to La, and the collapse of his relationship with his soulmate Karen (the luminous Natascha McElhone, in a nicely pitched study of amused but exasperated indulgence). The original reality show broke ground with Pedro.

On November 11, 1994, the day after the final episode of The Real World: San Francisco aired, Pedro Zamora succumbed to complications from AIDS. Most of the world had only known him since June of that year, but the 22-year-old had made the most of the short time he’d spent on earth.

Born in Cuba, raised in Miami, Pedro was diagnosed as HIV+ while still in high school, and had dedicated his life to being an educator on the disease.  Prior to appearing on the groundbreaking MTV reality show, he had already spoken about the disease with Oprah Winfrey, Phil Donahue, and before a session of Congress.

But it was by appearing on The Real World: San Francisco that he managed to have a global impact. For many young people, Pedro was the first real, out gay man they ever saw »

Precious is an extraordinary film about race

11 November 2009 2:35 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Who'd have thought a film about a sexually abused black teenager would make whole cinemas stand and cheer?

This week, as you have no doubt been kept well informed, marked the first anniversary of Barack Obama's election victory. Yet the most telling and inadvertently damning verdict about what – if anything – has happened to Us race relations since then has come, not from HBO, but from the cinema.

As chance would have it, two movies out this month in America have as their protagonist a poor, overweight black teenager, a coincidence that would once have been unthinkable. Yet this is not quite the modern triumph of post-racial America that it might seem.

Precious: Based On The Novel Push by Sapphire came out on Friday and, fortunately, it is a lot better than that clunking subtitle would suggest. In two weeks' time, The Blind Side will be inflicted on the American public, »

Movies and TV, they go together like a horse and carriage (or something like that). Yup, the small and the silver screens haven’t always gotten on, but these days they’re practically inseparable. They share everything from talent to concepts, and the transference goes both ways, with TV shows being made into movies (Sex and the City, The X-Files) and movies into TV shows (The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Stargate Sg-1). And with a number of 2009’s cinematic offerings going televisual (2012, The Time Traveler’s Wife) we’re wondering what others we’d like to see, with this week’s Team Boxwish question asking: What movie would you like to see made into a TV show? »

You review: Jennifer's Body

9 November 2009 5:18 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Neither a Diablo Cody script or a vampiric Megan Fox have sold critics on Jennifer's Body. Did the feminist subtext convince you, or did the high-school horror outing just drain your patience?

It ought to have been a snappy subversion of the horror genre with a feminist subtext and dialogue to die for. But the critics are not convinced that Jennifer's Body, Diablo Cody's first screenplay since the Oscar-winning Juno, is quite as hot as it thinks it is.

All the ingredients are there: a decent enough body count, an on-form Megan Fox as the sublimely beautiful, enjoyably vapid Jennifer, and an oh-so-super-ridiculous plotline in which she is transformed into a flesh-eating succubus by eyeliner-sporting indie rockers who feel they need a helping hand from the Devil. Yet not everyone reckons the whole thing hangs together – there's a sense that Jennifer's Body might be lacking a soul.
