The Van Beuren Tom and Jerry (as said already not the famous cat and mouse, this is a human duo that lasted for just under 30 cartoons between 1931 and 1933) series was interesting but uneven and not easy to rate as an overall whole. At the series' best, the cartoons were good. At its worst, they were really bad.
After a very good debut cartoon 'Wot a Night', which is one of the best Tom and Jerry cartoons by quite some way, the quality declines significantly with 'Polar Pals'. 'Polar Pals' is not entirely unwatchable and oddly enough there's worse in the series. But there is not much to recommend to recommend here and it is really disappointing that such a promising start is not lived up to so early on. It is a good thing that the very good quality of 'Wot a Night' is not a fluke, but it does take a number of outings before there is a cartoon just as good.
'Polar Pals' gets plus points for its interesting portrayal of the jazz scene, the very lively and infectious music score (often a high point in even the worst cartoons) and an okay ending.
However, after such good animation quality in 'Wot a Night', it is hard to believe that the animation is so drastically inferior. Quite a lot of it to me looked pretty bad, especially the crude character designs with some strange-looking animals and a lack of fluidity in the movement. Everything just looks so static and simplistic.
It's a paper thin cartoon in story and doesn't have any remotely amusing gags or imagination to make up for that, whereas there have been cartoons in existence that have gotten away with this because of having those things. Not even the liveliness of the music can save the timing from being so sluggish, making the interesting setting feel wasted. Tom and Jerry are not likable here and are pretty bland, and the animals are not particularly funny or interesting.
Overall, sad to see a series that started off from very good to very weak so quickly. 3/10 Bethany Cox
