If there is one thing Hollywood likes, it's a comeback story, and no one seems more poised for that right now than writer-director Troy Duffy. Politics may have sunk his The Boondock Saints initially, but word of mouth and DVD sales proved co-star Billy Connolly right when he said, "The kids will find it! It's rock 'n' roll!"
Now the saints have been resurrected in a sequel, The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day. In honor of this achievement, we look at six movies that surprisingly failed in theaters in Back from the Dead: Movie Classics that Began as Box-Office Bombs.

With all the random casting news that runs in the trades day after day and the sometimes uncertain nature of talent being attached to various projects, here at FirstShowing we've decided that rather than clogging the newswire with individual stories for every single casting announcement, we're rolling them up into succinct posts called Casting Tidbits. First up, Variety reports that Ron Livingston (Office Space, The Time Traveler's Wife) has joined Steve Carell and Paul Rudd in Jay Roach's comedy Dinner for Schmucks about a group of bourgeois friends who regularly invite the biggest schmucks to dinner and ridicule them. Second, Variety also reports that two gorgeous leading ladies, January Jones (of AMC's "Mad Men") and Diane Kruger (Inglourious Basterds), have joined Liam Neeson in the action-thriller Unknown White Male. Story centers on a man (Neeson) who awakens from a coma to find that someone else has assumed his identity, »

Yeah… If you could just… go ahead and act in… Dinner For Schmucks… That’d be great.. Office Space’s Ron Livingston is set to join Paul Rudd and Steve Carrell in comedian heavy ‘Dinner For Schmucks’, the new film from the director Jay Roach, of ‘Austin Powers’ and ‘Meet The Parents’ fame. ‘Dinner For Schmucks’ is actually a remake of French film ‘Le dîner de cons’, which should be comforting to anyone panicking at the idea of an original concept coming out of Hollywood. The film’s protagonist, Tim Conrad, hosts a regular dinner party for his friends, encouraging them to bring along the most idiotic person they can find. These idiots are then asked about their lives, passions, anything to make them talk. Then, after they leave, the group of friends proceeds to mercilessly mock them, the aim being to find the world’s worst dinner guest. Steve »

Ron Livingston is the beating heart of Mike Judge’s Office Space, a movie that has transcended cult status and is pretty much one of the finest comedies to be released in the 1990s. He’s also pretty notable for the role of Captain Lewis Nixon in Band of Brothers on HBO.
Now, he’ll be joining director Jay Roach (Austin Powers, Meet the Parents) for his new film Dinner for Schmucks.
According to Variety, the film “is an adaptation of the Francis Veber-helmed French film Le dinner de cons, in which a group of bourgeois friends regularly invite the biggest schmucks to dinner to ridicule them.”
The cast that’s shaping up for this film is phenomenal. It’ll be headed up by I Love You, Man’s Paul Rudd and The Office’s Steve Carell, who of course acted together in The 40-Year-Old-Virgin. They’ll be joined »

Remember Ron Livingston? He’s the actor who you may know from Band of Brothers, Swingers and one of my favourite films of all time, Office Space. He’s completely underrated as an actor which can be seen in the diversity of characters in Office Space and Band of Brothers.
Variety have given us information today stating that Livingston has joined the new Jay Roach comedy also set to star Paul Rudd and Steve Carell, “Dinner for Schmuck”.
Pic is an adaptation of the Francis Veber-helmed French film “Le dinner de cons,” in which a group of bourgeois friends regularly invite the biggest schmucks to dinner to ridicule them. Livingston’s recent credits include New Line’s “The Time Traveler’s Wife” and the indie “Holly.”

The underrated Ron Livingston – who will always have a place in Empire’s heart for his work on Office Space, Swingers and, whisper it, his run as Berger in Sex And The City – has joined the cast of Jay Roach’s all-star comedy, Dinner For Schmucks. In case your memory needs jogging, Schmucks stars Paul Rudd as a man who hosts a regular dinner party for his friends, the raison d’etre of which is to find the world’s most pathetic guest. When Carell’s apparent simpleton turns up, the quest appears over. Or is it? Etc. etc.Livingston joins a table that will be brimming with top-tier comedic talent, from Zach Galifianakis to our very own Lucy Punch and David Walliams. No word on who he’s playing just yet, though. The DreamWorks/Spyglass/Paramount movie is currently filming, with a July 23 release date set for next year. »

For those of you in the La area, the 13th annual Hollywood Film Festival kicks off Oct. 23 and continues through the weekend with some promising horror programs at 9pm each evening.
First up on Friday is the Interplanetary (accompanied by short Attackazoids), a B-movie romp across the surface of Mars from Birmingham film-maker Chance Shirley, who shot on old-school 16mm “like it was still 1983”. Originally pitched as “Alien meets Office Space”, this is Shirley’s follow-up to 2004’s zombie comedy, Hide and Creep. Saturday’s line up is all about the walking dead and includes Spanish chaos-in-a-mall short, Zombies and Cigarettes, followed by zombie/serial-killer hybrid Die-ner.
Tightly constructed around strong performances, Die-ner ponders the existential dilemma of a sociopath stuck in – obviously – a diner, facing an onslaught from his recently deceased victims. If you prefer bloodsuckers on a Saturday night, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Undead is a dark comedy »

The summer of 2009 may have come to an end but the films that helped define it are just now making their way to Blu-ray Disc in 1080p high definition.
A couple such as Fox's X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Universal's Land of the Lost snuck out the gate early and are already available in stores. But there are many more on the way between now and year's end including District 9, Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds, J.J. Abrams' Star Trek and The Hangover, just to name a few.
I've been asked the same question on a few occasions now, "hey Dan, what's new and good on Blu-ray for this holiday season?" Rather than spew out a lengthy outline full of catalog, music, documentary and other tertiary titles, I have put together the following chronological shopping list, or holiday buying guide if you will, of the more notable and recognizable films »

Let’s bow our heads for a moment of silence. As we learned last night, NBC snuffed out one of our favorite procedurals, the gritty, fantastically acted Southland. You’d think shoving Jay Leno down our throats for five hours of primetime would be injury enough, but no—they had to add insult. This, NBC. This is why TV viewers are dropping network for cable in ever-greater numbers. Viewers know cable offers the kind of risky, investment-heavy programming that’s rare on network television these days, and what’s better, cable will actually stick with it. Take a show like Mad Men. »

I can understand exactly where i09's Annalee Newitz is coming from when she writes "Did Stupid Marketing Kill Jennifer's Body?" even if I think she is beating a dead horse. We all have movies we either like or love that we wish more people would have seen and supported. The thought behind this is that if they prove to be successful hopefully the studios will begin making more just like them. Instead, people flock to endless sequels to Saw and superhero movies.
Annalee's argument relating to Jennifer's Body revolves around the idea Fox simply marketed the movie to the wrong demo -- boys. Instead, what they should have done was recognize the film's strong female driven premise and market it toward the gender that makes up over 60% of horror movie audiences -- women.
I didn't connect to the film in any way, but apparently that has to do with »

Welcome to the first installment in a new Screen Rant Halloween lead-up series called “Horror Plus” - a feature which sets out to showcase one film that combines horror with another genre. It will basically serve as a review of the film at hand, explaining why it’s such a good example of genre merging.
Be sure to keep and eye out for other installments such as “Horror Plus Sci-Fi” and “Horror Plus Action” in the coming weeks leading up to Halloween on October 31st.
The first installment of our “Horror Plus” lineup is Edgar Wright’s Shaun of the Dead, a film that represents a successful mix of the horror and comedy genres. There’s also a romance angle thrown in there, leading to the playful tagline of “Rom-Com-Zom” - a romantic comedy with zombies. The film is simultaneously a wonderful parody of the zombie horror sub-genre and a »

Abrams is producing a comedy for Fox? ...and finally, the Fall season is here and here are TV Squad's reviews of Cougar Town, Modern Family, and Eastwick.
