What one would expect from a Manga movie.
The-Sarkologist22 October 2011
Warning: Spoilers
This is a manga movie which means that it is animated. One does not say that it is a cartoon because this insults those who love manga, which I am not among. Some Manga movies I don't mind but generally I don't find them interesting, and some of them are just too surreal for my tastes. Big War (though a half-Japanese friend of mine suggested that this was not the proper translation) is not one of these movies, though there are some interesting ideas that come out of this one.

Big War is set in the Twenty Fifth century and an alien race known only as the gods have invaded the solar system. The action takes place on Mars, the last planet before they reach Earth and is focused around Captain Ako, whose ship was destroyed in a previous battle. The opening seems to depict this battle and we see a destroy ship where two humans come across a body of one of them. The fact that the god is dead shows us that they are not really gods, but just very powerful mortals.

The first part of the movie defines the character of Ako and his relationship with an intelligence agent. She tracks him down on Mars and they have a love affair. We are also shown that the gods can influence people's minds and turn them against each other, and the intelligence agencies track these people down and kill them before they can sabotage the human war effort. Once the gods attack, the plot shifts to the destruction of their carrier known as Hell and an intense war scene begins.

The topic of why this war is fought is raised at the beginning. It seems that the gods came out of nowhere and began to attack the humans. There is discussion about how the gods were our creators and we have become too powerful so they are trying to destroy us before we destroy them. Then there is the idea that we were given Earth, but we took Mars as well and the gods have come to punish us because Mars is not meant to be for us.

This movie seems to be an attack at religion. After the Tokyo gas attacks, organised religion has been treated very harshly. Japan today is a society based of business, and I have been told that foreign religions have been treated with much suspicion. The whole concept of brainwashing and turning against society is something that religion, especially Christianity, has been accused of for centuries. In ancient Rome, Christianity was considered a religion that opposed the state and was thus outlawed. This is not so in Japan, but it is treated with much suspicion. This suspicion seems to have manifested itself in the form of this movie.

The middle of the movie has a scene where the leader of the gods has gathered humans about him, his chosen ones, and has promised them peace in paradise. The others that are not apart of this shall be destroyed. The whole concept of the attack of the carrier known as Hell is to say that God is not all powerful and he cannot hold any such thing over our head. Instead we can fight and defeat him and those who are turned should be treated as having been lost.

This is not the way God works. First of all he is the creator of everything and because of that he can destroy everything. He created and is in control of the laws of physics and thus can change them at his will. He is not bound by them as we are. Also he created us and gave us a choice to follow him and live in paradise eternally, or reject him and die. Well chose the second way, so when the end does come, it is our own fault, and we can not even think about winning a war against him.

good but not great

The movie really needs more battle sequences. The story is slow I don't think it's bad but it could be better. There are some very interesting parts but there are not many. In conclusion the film is not bad but not really good either.

HORRIBLE!

Warning: Spoilers
This movie is BY FAR the worst thing I've ever seen animated (and that is saying A LOT). Let's consider the story for a moment (contains spoilers, if you're going to watch this "film" you may want to skip this part.)

1. Aliens are attacking the people living on mars (okay, pretty standard.) 2. The humans can't seem to do ANYTHING to hurt the aliens (alright...I can SORTA buy that...but it seems odd that they would keep sending thousands of people to die if they can't even scratch them.) 3. The aliens have a stealth land-based carrier named "Hell" (maybe this just translated poorly, but I even let that slide.) 4. The humans have ONE battleship that's better than all the rest (standard for anime). 5. The main character's girlfriend is being mind controlled by aliens (okay...) 6. Alien mind control turns her into a Nymphomaniac (HOLD ON A SECOND!) 7. A government agent is spying on him having wild sex with his girlfriend, tells him "Hey, I saw you having sex the other night", and then proceeds to eat his mayonnaise. (WHAT?!?!?!) 8. She turns into an alien, he kills her, then they have a ridiculous boat chase during which he kills the guy who ate his mayonnaise (HUH?!?!) 9. The whole city gets destroyed, but thankfully the one battleship escapes (EVERYONE'S DEAD?!) 10. The aliens are really girls. (ARGH!) 11. They shoot them and they die. (Nevermind.) 12. The alien motherbrain attacks them with delusions and rainbow colored light. But the good guys win anyway. (Fine, whatever.is it over yet?) 13. YEA!

Let's forget for a second that the plot is c**p, the characters are both two dimensional AND unbelievable, the background story is ridiculous, and a major plot device was NYMPHOMANIA...other than that this was a good movie.

Don't make the mistake I made. NEVER SEE THIS MOVIE (unless you're drunk, then it's the funniest thing in the world)!

Did we watch the same movie?
doublethink0314 July 2015
This movie is very good, especially compared to other similar-themed anime made during the same era. It has much more 'realism,' in spite of the sci-fi scenario, and less goofiness like stare-downs and people flying through the air and remaining motionless at the same time.

In a way, it's more like a regular war / action / spy movie all wrapped into one and published in anime format. You get terrorism, mind-control, secret agents, an alien race that refer to themselves as 'gods' and claims to be mankind's clreators, quite convincing alien technology ship and aircraft action, close combat including power-armor, a traumatized hero and more. The story, however, is pretty straight-forward and not confusing in a bad way, as in many other anime.

What I like most about it is how the movie's creators very effectively gave it an epic feel, as if it were part of something bigger. The references to the past are well-done, well-tied into the story and makes the viewer long for more. It could well have been made into a Daisenki universe anime trilogy plus an ova series. Actually, after watching it, I googled if there were something like that, sadly it turns out there is only the movie.

One could argue that the movie does not have the production standards to warrant a score of 9, but I think that this actually adds to its charm. If you like serious sci-fi military-themed anime and don't mind or actually appreciate the 80's / early 90's feel, then give this one a view.

Japanese BEAUTY
dazhaun-1102116 December 2022
The artwork here is absolutely stunning. Even if this movie had a terrible storyline, which it doesn't, it would still be worth watching for the artwork! This is one of those classics that showed what humanity was capable of regarding animation. The Japanese were so meticulous, and spent so much time animating these movies... You should show your kids, and tell them how much work it took to animate scenes like this! It's truly a marvel of human effort!

Nowadays, in the days of "My hero academia" and "Boruto", you see a lot of slapdash animation... These old animes show you what it's all about! You could first show your kids random episodes of Boruto, and then show them this movie, and they'll immediately see the difference! New animation sucks. The standard has been lowered. Kinda understandable, but still, it helps to show the young generation what animators used to do in the 80's and early 90's.

Not "Big" Enough
jar16422 April 2000
I rented "Big Wars" because I like dark, mecha-stuffed Anime. I got my share of shadowy skylines and dreary airports, but the movie does not fit the title. One would expect to encounter many many battles, but there is only one small battle. Slow-moving, and with its fair share of subplot, I wouldn't suggest this movie unless you want to study the animation and mood.

Anime fluff.
Blueghost23 November 2007
Okay, I admit it. I saw this thing when it was first release on video umpteen years ago. My reaction then wasn't a whole lot different than now; "Huh." I've seen bad anime before. And I've seen good anime. This thing falls into a poor shade of gray, with leanings towards the poor side.

The animation itself is on par with a lot of anime. That is to say the action scenes are well done, but the character driven scenes are fairly sparse in terms of story movement. But standard anime production values can't help a thin story line. Here the main theme seems to orbit some kind of quasi-religious-sexual oriented schism between the humans and "aliens".

Truth be told I think someone (some Japanese producer) saw some conceptual art of proposed mobile land bases for the United States Air Force (see Popular Mechanics or Science for this), and thought it'd be a "cool idea" to create movie around one of these things. Well, films have been conjured from less material, and with mixed results. Only here the story is loosely held together by a single plot device. One which doesn't even see the film all the way through.

Huh.

It's not the worst film I've ever seen. As I stated in my opening I bought this thing on a whim when it first appeared on VHS. I wasn't too happy with it, but I'd seen worse. I picked it up the other day because I saw the DVD in the bargain bin for a couple of dollars. And wen I popped it into the drive all the "huh" feelings I had before when I first watched it came flooding back.

"Big Wars" falls into the realm of glamorized single-episode TV specials, only animated. In the late 80s and early 90s Japan was cranking out small anime mini-series and single titles that were barely over an hour in length. "Big Wars" falls into that category, and, unless you're a real die-hard military-sci-fi anime fan, I'd pass it up. There's just not much here to offer sci-fi aficionados and anime fans alike.
