We are now less than one month away from the release of Lionsgate’s The Strangers: Chapter 1, the first film in a brand new reboot trilogy from director Renny Harlin (A Nightmare on Elm Street: The Dream Master, Deep Blue Sea). It’s coming to theaters May 17, 2024.
The Strangers: Chapter 1 has officially been rated “R” this week for…
“Horror violence, language and brief drug use.”
For the sake of comparison, Bryan Bertino’s original home invasion film was rated “R” for “violence/terror,” while Prey at Night was rated “R” for “horror violence and terror throughout.”
Madelaine Petsch (“Riverdale”), Froy Gutierrez (Hocus Pocus 2), Rachel Shenton (The Silent Child), Ema Horvath (“Rings of Power”) and Gabe Basso (Hillbilly Elegy) star.
Based on the original 2008 cult horror franchise, the project features Petsch, who drives cross-country with her longtime boyfriend (Gutierrez) to begin a new life in the Pacific Northwest. When...

An upcoming independent horror film with Hereditary and The Conjuring vibes is creeping its way toward screens. Screenwriter Lila McLaughlin is stepping behind the camera for her directorial debut, shooting from a script she wrote that sounds bone-chilling in all the best ways. Joining McLaughlin for Don’t Let Them Out are Emily Rios, Louis Ferreira, and Bonnie Root as primary cast members.
According to Deadline‘s exclusive report, Don’t Let Them Out follows “a struggling woman who journeys to a property she has inherited in hopes of selling it to pay off her debts. But upon arriving to the property, the story takes a terrifying turn when the woman is lured into a desperate scavenger hunt down a perilous rabbit hole.”

Director Renny Harlin's career is fascinating. The Finnish filmmaker grew up loving Hollywood movies and later managed to insert himself into that very industry, making a slew of successful '80s and '90s movies from "The Long Kiss Goodnight" to "A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master." More recently, however, his output has been a little more uneven.
Last year, Harlin's Pierce Brosnan-starring film "The Misfits" made a surprise comeback on Netflix. I say a "surprise" because "The Misfits" did not fare well at the box office when it was first released in 2021, and despite Harlin's efforts to rekindle the magic of his '90s actioners, simply functioned, according to critic Chris Bumbray, as "ad for Abu Dhabi tourism." Thankfully, the man who gave us such classics as "Die Hard 2" and "Cliffhanger" has not simply been reduced to churning out streaming movies that desperately...

This article contains casting spoilers for all eight episodes of Fallout.
The Fallout gaming franchise presents a big storytelling universe to play in. And that’s exactly what drew showrunners Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner to the Prime Video TV adaptation in the first place.
“It’s more creatively interesting to be able to build our own story in the world that they’ve carved out for us,” Wagner told Den of Geek. “That’s historically been the trajectory of Fallout. It’s traded hands many times, with different creative teams taking it over. It’s kept it fresh, kept it relevant. We chose to just vainly look at this as our Fallout.”
Of course, a big storytelling universe also requires a big cast to fill it up. Prime Video’s Fallout isn’t wanting for compelling lead characters thanks to Lucy MacLean (Ella Purnell), Maximus (Aaron Moten), and The Ghoul...

Director Bryan Bertino crafted a classic of the home invasion genre when "The Strangers" hit theaters in 2010. Now, Lionsgate has teamed up with director Renny Harlin ("Deep Blue Sea") to revamp the franchise with not just one movie, but an entire trilogy that will not just remake the first film, but further explore these mysterious killers across three full movies. The studio is deeply committed, as all three movies are already in the can. Hence, they brought some new footage from "The Strangers: Chapter 1" to this year's CinemaCon, and I was on hand to see what they had to show us. Buckle up, horror fans.
Harlin explained in an interview with /Film that he hopes to "answer some of those questions that I think all of us who enjoyed the original were left wondering" such as "Why? Who were the Strangers? Why did they do this? Is this completely really random,...

Stars: Freya Allan, Jeremy Irvine, Ruby Barker, Peter Mullan, Saffron Burrows, Ned Dennehy | Written by Christina Pamies, Bryce McGuire, Lorcan Reilly | Directed by Alberto Corredor
Director Alberto Corredor expands his own award-winning 2017 short for this original British horror. In addition to delivering a steady flow of creepy chills, it also has significant franchise potential, and if that happens, sales of potato sacks are going to go through the roof come Halloween time.
Baghead is set in present-day Berlin, where cash-strapped 20-something Iris (The Witcher’s Freya Allan) inherits a large run-down pub, after the horrific death of her estranged father, Owen (Peter Mullan). The manager of her father’s estate is keen to offload the property, but Iris decides to stay, inviting her best friend Katie (Bridgerton’s Ruby Barker) to join her.
However, they soon discover that the basement of the pub is home to a sinister supernatural presence,...

There are sharks all up in the Seine in Netflix’s upcoming aquatic horror, Under Paris. Here’s the first trailer.
At some point, sharks will club together and get a PR manager; until then, we’ll keep getting films like Jaws, Sharknado, and upcoming efforts like Beast Of War, Something In The Water and Renny Harlin’s Deep Water.
To the ever-growing list we can now add Under Paris, coming to a small screen near you this summer courtesy of Netflix. If you haven’t gathered already: yes, the film really is about sharks swimming up the Seine to terrorise all the hundreds of people that (presumably) swim in Paris’ waters on any given day.
Yes, it’s all incredibly silly, but if the trailer’s anything to go by, everyone involved knows it’s all incredibly silly. Under Paris is directed by Xavier Gens, who broke through with the extremely gory 2007 indie horror,...

Mama said knock you out! Well, LL Cool J did at least. Look, we all know egos and testosterone can be a dangerous combination in the locker room, but when you put that locker room on the set of a major motion picture, things can really blow up. And that’s just what happened during the making of Any Given Sunday, when Jamie Foxx – then trying to make a name as a dramatic actor – and LL Cool J – the hero of Deep Blue Sea – got into it, with the rapper trying to get ahead of an entirely different kind of shark.
In the Any Given Sunday scene in question, Foxx’s Willie Beaman and LL Cool J’s Julian Washington were to get into it over mishandling the ball. With tensions building apparently just from being on the same field as one other, LL Cool J reached over star Al Pacino...

Countless shark attack horror movies have flooded the market since Steven Spielberg changed the game with Jaws back in the 1970s, but the reality is that most of them aren’t very good. For every quality shark attack movie like Deep Blue Sea or The Shallows, there are about 100 imitators that have only really served to devalue the entire subgenre in their wake.
But every so often, we get a good one. And Netflix may have one of those on their hands with Under Paris, a shark attack horror movie from French filmmaker Xavier Gens.
Fresh off the just-released action movie Mayhem!, Xavier Gens (Frontiers, Cold Skin) is back this June with Under Paris, and Netflix has unleashed the official trailer this week.
Following in the grand tradition of Jaws, a celebration turns into a PR nightmare when a hungry shark comes to Paris. One shark. A whole lot of tasty humans.

Everyone loves a good shark movie. Ever since Jaws hit theaters and broke box office records in 1975, it’s been a reliable horror movie genre. While everyone knows Jaws is by far the best shark movie ever, there are loads of other movies out there that should make you just as afraid to get in the water. We’re gonna need a bigger boat as we travel these dangerous waters of shark films.
Zombie (1979)
Ok. Already I’m cheating, but I mean . . . come on. This has one of the best shark scenes in cinematic history. During an early scene of the movie, a woman decides to go for a swim in the lovely Caribbean waters when a tiger shark appears. As she hides among some of the terrain on the ocean floor, she quickly finds she is not alone. A zombie has found his way into the depths.

Freya Allan clearly hasn’t gotten her fill of working on material that involves magic and monsters with her role on the Netflix series The Witcher, as she also has the lead role in the new horror film Baghead, which was given a theatrical release in the UK back in January. Now Shudder has announced that Baghead will be available to stream on their service (and on AMC+) as of Friday, April 5th. So if you’re a Shudder or AMC+ subscriber, you’ll have the chance to watch this movie in just a couple weeks. You can watch the trailer for Baghead, along with a clip from the film, at This Link.

I find it ironic how despite existing on a planet where pretty much every living thing originated in the ocean, one of humanity’s most widespread fears is thalassophobia – the fear of the deep ocean. Whether it’s some form of genetic memory that continues to haunt our species or a natural reaction to witnessing one of the deadliest ecosystems in the world, it’s no surprise storytellers have been taking advantage of this fear for millennia.
And while Jaws obviously dominates the conversation when it comes to underwater horror in film, there are still some intrepid filmmakers that dare to explore other kinds of sea-borne thrills. For example, Deep Blue Sea director Renny Harlin’s upcoming Deep Water looks like it’s going to take us on another roller-coaster ride directly into shark-infested waters. Directed by Shane Black, Play Dirty is the first project based on Donald E. Yes, I’m talking about The Strangers, and if the snippets from the trailer are anything to go by, we’re in for a terrifying treat.

"Why are you doing this to us?!" "Because you're here." Lionsgate has revealed the first official trailer for a horror sequel titled The Strangers: Chapter 1, arriving in theaters starting this May. It's the next sequel in The Strangers horror series, but it's also the start of a brand new trilogy, sort of a re-imagining but using the same premise of creepy, masked people showing up at a home. Madelaine Petsch & Froy Gutierrez star as a couple who come into contact with the three psychopathic masked strangers while on a roadtrip through Oregon. Serving as the third film in The Strangers series created by Bryan Bertino, it's also the first installment of a new trilogy of standalone sequel films, where Chapter 1 will follow a similar premise to the the first film and takes place in the same continuity as the first two installments. This is directed by action master Renny Harlin,...

‘The Strangers: Chapter 1’ Trailer Looks Like a Direct Remake of the 2008 Home Invasion Horror Movie
The first installment in a brand new reboot trilogy from Lionsgate and director Renny Harlin, The Strangers: Chapter 1 will be available in theaters nationwide on May 17, 2024.
The Strangers: Chapter 1 is said to be something of a remake of the original 2008 movie, while its sequels – Chapter 2 and Chapter 3 – will blaze a new path from there.
Our hope is that the two subsequent movies will allow Renny Harlin to get crazy and inject a little more of his personal filmmaking style into the proceedings, because The Strangers: Chapter 1 indeed does look to be a pretty straight up remake of Bryan Bertino’s 2008 home invasion classic. This first trailer essentially goes through all the familiar beats, ending with a new/lesser version of the most iconic line from Bertino’s movie. “Because you were home” has been replaced with “Because you’re here,” which doesn’t quite have the same punch to it.

Remember "The Strangers"? They're back — in trilogy form. Released in 2008, "The Strangers" is a wildly effective horror pic in which a couple finds themselves targeted at random by a trio of masked killers. Written and directed by Bryan Bertino, the film made great use of sound design and slowly building dread to create a memorable scary movie that went on to become a sleeper hit at the box office. In 2018, we got "The Strangers: Prey At Night," a sequel that followed a similar formula but changed up the atmosphere a bit (it felt like more of a traditional slasher movie than the first film).
Now, we're getting a whole new trilogy, helmed by none other than Renny Harlin, the filmmaker behind "Cliffhanger" and "Deep Blue Sea." The plan is to release all three films in one year, and things are kicking off with "The Strangers: Chapter 1." Don't call it a remake,...

It’s, once again, not safe to go in the water as we quickly find out in the first trailer for Something In The Water.
We’ve barely recovered from the whiplash of watching Jason Statham battle a ginormous shark in The Meg 2, but here we go again!
No, it’s not another The Meg movie. This time, five ordinary women are pitted against a very hungry shark while stranded in the Caribbean.
Take a look at the trailer for Something In The Water.
Hold on, let me just cancel my upcoming holiday to the Caribbean. Now then, that looks rather good!
A tranquil holiday and wedding celebration that turns into a bloody fight for survival? Sign us up.

Last year, we heard that Gene Simmons of the rock band Kiss would be launching a new production company with Gary Hamilton (so the company is appropriately called Simmons/Hamilton Productions), and the first project they had given the greenlight was a shark thriller called Deep Water – with Deep Blue Sea director Renny Harlin attached to take the helm of the film! That film has since made its way through production, and a couple days ago we learned that the cast includes Aaron Eckhart of Harlin’s The Bricklayer, Sir Ben Kingsley (Gandhi), Molly Wright (Netflix’s True Spirit), Angus Sampson (Mad Max: Fury Road), Kelly Gale (Plane), singer and actor Li Wenhan, who is a member of the Chinese-Korean K-Pop group Uniq, and Nashi (Creation of the Gods I: Kingdom of Storms). Now a first look image has made its way online, and it shows the characters played by Eckhart and Wright.

Directed by Deep Blue Sea and Cliffhanger’s Renny Harlin, Deep Water will see Aaron Eckhart and Ben Kingsley fend off killer sharks.
Exactly a quarter of a century on from his last toothsome opus, Deep Blue Sea, director Renny Harlin is returning to shark-infested waters with the upcoming Deep Water.
Filming has already wrapped on the survival thriller, with shooting having taken place on locations in New Zealand and Spain, but it’s only now that Screen Daily reports that the movie stars Aaron Eckhart and Ben Kingsley.
The stars are among the luckless passengers whose flight from Los Angeles to Shanghai crashes into the ocean, where they’re forced to survive as hungry sharks begin to circle.
Quoted in Screen Daily’s report, Harlin – also famous for the likes of Die Hard 2: Die Harder and Cliffhanger – doesn’t mention his earlier shark film. Instead, he draws parallels...

In January of 1999, two teen movies opened back to back and kicked off what would be one of the most extraordinary years for youth-oriented movies in the history of Hollywood. Both were No. 1 at the box office their first weekend. Both boasted remarkable casts of rising stars — they even shared a star in Paul Walker. And both whipped ancient genre conventions into new combinations that made them fresh and new. Yet for all their similarities, “Varsity Blues” and “She’s All That” couldn’t have been more different: one an R-rated sports drama that tempered its inspirational coming-of-age drama with surprisingly harsh depictions of misogyny and physical and mental abuse, the other a sweet, good-natured romantic comedy nearly as innocent as a Mickey Rooney-Judy Garland vehicle from the 1940s. In their similarities and differences lies the key to why 1999 was such a great year for movies of their type — the 1939 of teen movies.

Yesterday, we shared a new interview with director Renny Harlin that mostly focuses on his latest film, the action movie The Bricklayer, which was given a theatrical, On Demand, and Digital release earlier this month. But the interview also branches out with mentions of other Harlin projects, including the 1999 shark thriller Deep Blue Sea (watch it Here), which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. During his conversation with JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray, Harlin revealed that Samuel L. Jackson’s character – and therefore the famous scene involving that character – was added into the script at the last minute.
Harlin said, “The whole scene has its roots in the fact that I had done Long Kiss Goodnight with Sam, and we sort of made a pact that we would always work together as often as we can. So then Deep Blue Sea came up and Sam called me and he’s like,...

Actress-comedian Aubrey Plaza got a new roommate to make sure her onstage debut was a success. The ‘Parks and Recreation’ alum, 39, revealed in an interview with Vulture that she’s currently living with three-time Tony Award winner Patti LuPone, reports ‘People’ magazine.
Plaza told the outlet that her ‘Agatha: Darkhold Diaries’ co-star, 74, has been helping her adjust to her role in the Off-Broadway revival of Danny and the Deep Blue Sea by making her soup and doing her laundry.
“She insisted. She’s trying to whip me into shape,” Plaza told the outlet, quoted by ‘People’. The Broadway veteran has also been teaching Plaza some valuable life lessons. The White Lotus actress recalled a conversation she had with LuPone after getting strep throat shortly before rehearsals started.

Every actor brings specific expectations to their projects. If you're starring in a superhero film, you might hope to wear a nifty costume or perhaps do some scenery-chewing as a diabolical villain. If you're in a monster movie, you might hope to be one of the final survivors or, if not that, then someone who gets taken out in a gloriously shocking manner on par with Samuel L. Jackson's infamous demise in "Deep Blue Sea." And if you're in a Western, you're undoubtedly going to hope that you get to wear a ten-gallon hat and do some horseback riding.
Tragically, Wes Bentley hasn't exactly gotten to put his horsemanship skills to the test as Jamie Dutton on Taylor Sheridan's immensely popular neo-Western series, "Yellowstone." The Harvard Law School graduate and adopted son of the Dutton patriarch John Dutton III (played by Kevin Costner) is more likely to be...

Streaming services are now trying to ration their upcoming original content due to the ongoing actors strike and the only recently-resolved writers’ strike, so we’re going to see a thinning-down of new releases across the board over the next six months at least. Hulu will be adding a lot of library TV shows and movies in November, but there are only a few new major original projects hitting the streamer this month.
Hulu’s spotlight streaming series in November is Black Cake, which is based on the bestselling book by Charmaine Wilkerson. Part family drama, part murder mystery, the show features a globetrotting story that will cover decades of events after a bereaved family find a flash drive that contains some shocking secrets about the hidden history of their late matriarch.
Also dropping on Hulu this month is the original film Quiz Lady, starring Sandra Oh, Awkwafina, Jason Schwartzman,...

Though Huluween is almost officially over, Hulu is not slowing down at all as the new month approaches! The streamer will head into November with plenty of new additions to un-spook yourself and keep warm, including the new Awkwafina and Sandra Oh-led “Quiz Lady”; Christmas classics like “National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation” and “The Polar Express,” and much more.
On the TV side, Hulu will have the exclusive two-episode premiere of FX’s limited murder mystery series “A Murder at the End of the World” starring Emma Corrin. “Fargo” fans can also catch the next-day streaming premiere of Season/Year 5, which will star Jon Hamm, Juno Temple, and Jennifer Jason Leigh. Plus, in comes more of the debut season of “Spellbound,” a serialized re-cut of Baz Luhrmann’s “Australia,” and several original series premieres, including “Black Cake” on Nov. 1.
