First Look: Nicolas Cage in The Hungry Rabbit Jumps

24 December 2009 6:00 AM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Janice Wong caught a photo of Nicolas Cage filming a scene for his new film The Hungry Rabbit Jumps. The dramatic thriller tells the story of "a man whose wife is the victim of a brutal crime" and "subsequently becomes entangled with an underground vigilante organization." Roger Donaldson (Thirteen Days, The Bounty, The Bank Job) is directing, while January Jones and Guy Pearce co-star. Here is a note from Wong: On the day I was finally going to go to Blaine Kern's Mardi Gras World, I hopped on the free ferry to Algiers on a whim. When I found out that the Mardi Gras World there had been shut down and moved to the other side of the water yrs back, I had half an hour to kill til the ferry could take me back. Wandering around, I stumbled onto a movie shoot with Nicholas Cage Bahahahahahaha! I spoke to »

Thirteen Days: on the brink of nuclear war, Hollywood steps in

26 November 2009 12:00 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

This partisan politico-drama focuses on the Cuban missile crisis, with only a cursory glance in the direction of Havana and Moscow. With Kevin Costner in the starring role, we wouldn't expect anything else

Director: Roger Donaldson

Entertainment grade: B+

History grade: A–

The Cuban missile crisis of October 1962 was a nuclear stand-off between the United States and Ussr. The Soviets placed missiles in Cuba, so the Americans blockaded the island. For two weeks, there was a serious danger that the confrontation might result in a third – and potentially devastating – world war.

People

The film focuses on John F Kennedy's appointments secretary, Kenny O'Donnell (Kevin Costner). O'Donnell begins by establishing that he is an all-American hero, breakfasting with his 400 or so apple-cheeked children and flirting manfully with Jackie Kennedy. Though he was a member of Ex-Comm, the committee which advised Kennedy during the crisis, O'Donnell was a minor figure. It's conspicuously »

January Jones Teams Up With Nicolas Cage for Hungry Rabbit Jumps

28 October 2009 12:11 AM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Not surprisingly, it seems that things are going well for January Jones's career after her great work in Mad Men. In a recent page 3, we mentioned that Jones would be joining Diane Kruger and Liam Neeson in Unknown White Male. Now it seems she has another theatrical project lined up. Jones will be starring in Hungry Rabbit Jump, alongside Nicolas Cage as his wife. The film will be helmed by Roger Donaldson (The Bank Job, Thirteen Days), with a script by Robert Tannen (Even Money). We've known about the project since September, when Cage left The Green Hornet. The film concerns a man who is out for revenge after his wife becomes victim to a crime. He seeks out help from a vigilante group, and quickly gets in over his head. I'm not sure if we can rely on Cage not to give us a hilarious performance (somebody remind »

Nicolas Cage to Star in Hungry Rabbit Jumps

8 September 2009 4:29 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

On its blog Heat Vision, The Hollywood Reporter writes that Nicolas Cage has signed on to star in the upcoming thriller Hungry Rabbit Jumps. The news comes just one week after the announcement that Cage would star in another revenge flick, Drive Angry.

Hungry Rabbit Jumps is being directed by Roger Donaldson, who also helmed Thirteen Days, The Recruit, and The World's Fastest Indian. The script by Robert Tannen involves a man who becomes entangled with an underground vigilante organization after his wife falls victim to a brutal crime.

Tobey Maguire is acting as one of the movie's producers (through his company, Maguire Entertainment), and the movie is reportedly scheduled to begin filming in New Orleans this coming January. Also producing is Jim Stern of Endgame, who commented briefly on the project:

As a company, we've been wanting to do a thriller for a long time ... In the best of the Hitchcockian tradition, »

If it's Tuesday, there's a new Nicolas Cage movie to talk about

8 September 2009 12:55 AM, PDT | Corona's Coming Attractions | See recent Corona's Coming Attractions news »

At the tail end of last month news broke of a new action movie called Drive Angry that Nicolas Cage has committed to star in. He still is going to star in that film which starts rolling in April but now Cage has found another paycheck to earn before Drive Angry gets rolling.

The Hollywood Reporter says that the comic book Coppola will topline The Hungry Rabbit Jumps, a thriller that will shoot in January in New Orleans (the same place where Drive Angry will lens.) Get this: the story will have Mr. Ghost Rider playing a man whose wife is a victim of a brutal crime, so he gets caught up somehow in an underground vigilante group that ferrets out justice on criminals. Sounds like Fight Club meets The Star Chamber meets Death Wish. At this rate it's pretty much a given that if you're playing a son, daughter »

It’s “Wolf Man Day!” Check out the new pics and trailer from ‘The Wolf Man’

20 August 2009 11:00 AM, PDT | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

We can officially call this “Wolf Man Day” with the amount of images that were released. On top of that, the trailer for The Wolf Man just popped up online and all I can say is “whoa.”

The Wolf Man’s release date was recently moved to February 12, 2010 which gave credence to all this talk of behind-the-scenes trouble and re-shoots. The film stars Benicio Del Toro, Anthony Hopkins and Emily Blunt.

The film is written by David Self (Road to Perdition, Thirteen Days ) and Andrew Kevin Walker (Se7en, Sleepy Hollow) and directed by Joe Johnston (The Rocketeer, Jumanji, Hidalgo).

“Inspired by the classic Universal film that launched a legacy of horror, The Wolfman brings the myth of a cursed man back to its iconic origins. Oscar winner Benicio Del Toro stars as Lawrence Talbot, a haunted nobleman lured back to his family estate after his brother vanishes. Reunited with his »

Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: August 2, 2009

2 August 2009 8:19 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

In the Universal Pictures-centric Wrap Up this week:

There are some Funny People at the top of the box office; Ron Howard puts together the pieces of Robert Ludlum’s Parsifal Mosaic; Judd Apatow’s films are now Universal; Charlize Theron is Florence of Arabia; Jesus Christ Superstar has been 2000 years in the making and there’ll be some action on The Lords Day (not a religious film!).

Box Office

It looks like the Judd Apatow brand may be losing some power. The Adam Sandler-headlined dramedy, Funny People, grossed just over $22 million this weekend.

With a reported $70 million budget, the film will need strong legs and good international sales to see any sort of profitability. The films serious subject matter (cancer) and long running time (2 ½ hours) are some of the main reasons cited for the lack-lustre opening.

Showing that no concept is too crazy to be popular, G-Force »

Ron Howard to Direct Robert Ludlum’s The Parsifal Mosaic

30 July 2009 10:47 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

It seems like everyone's getting bit by the Bourne bug as of late, with numerous spy novels getting locked down and plenty of big names stepping to the plate. The latest A-list director to turn his attention to an espionage thriller this week is none other than Opie himself, Ron Howard. According to Variety [1], Howard has signed on to direct an adaptation of Robert Ludlum's 1982 Cold War novel The Parsifal Mosaic. The story centers on a CIA agent who finds out that his lover is actually a double agent for the Kgb, and believes he has seen her being executed. David Self (Road to Perdition, Thirteen Days, The Wolf Man) will write the script, with usual Ron Howard partner Brian Grazer taking on the role of producer. While I love spy movies and I love the Bourne trilogy, something tells me that with Ron Howard at the helm, this »

Ron Howard to Direct Robert Ludlum's Parsifal Mosaic

30 July 2009 3:08 AM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

In February we wrote about how Universal was fast-tracking their adaptation of "The Parsifal Mosaic," another spy novel from Bourne author Robert Ludlum. Variety announces that Ron Howard will direct the movie, with a script being written by David Self (The Haunting, Thirteen Days, Road to Perdition, The Wolf Man). Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer, who has produced almost every single Ron Howard movie to date, will produce The Parsifal Mosaic. Coming off of Angels & Demons, Howard is also attached to direct The Strange Adventures of H.P. Lovecraft, The Originals, The Emperor's Children, and other projects. "The Parsifal Mosaic", published in 1982, is an espionage thriller about CIA agent Michael Havelock. At the beginning of the novel he believes he has just witnessed the execution of his partner and the love of his life, Jenna Karas, who had been marked for execution because she had been proved to be a »

Ron Howard to Direct The Parsifal Mosaic

29 July 2009 10:02 PM, PDT | TheMovingPicture.net | See recent TheMovingPicture news »

Ron Howard has signed on to direct Universal’s adaptation of the Robert Ludlum thriller The Parsifal Mosaic. David Self (Road to Perdition, Thirteen Days) is on board to write the screenplay. The 1982 book focuses on jockeying between U.S. and Soviet intelligence agents, with American spies Michael Havelock and Jenna Karas, who are partners as well as lovers, at the center of a series of crosses and double crosses. A flashback to a Nazi attack during World War II serves as a linchpin of the story. The action in Mosaic jumps between countries such as Italy, Greece and the former Czechoslovakia. The novel is regarded as perhaps the most Cold War-centric of Ludlum’s work. The studio, which is separately developing a fourth Bourne installment with director Paul Greengrass, and The Sigma Protocol (an adaptation of another Ludlum thriller), began negotiating the rights for Parsifal Mosaic, for which it »

Roger Donaldson Takes Umbra(ge)

26 May 2009 7:39 PM, PDT | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

They should have called the movie “Umbrage” instead of the bleh sounding “Umbra”. Why? Cause that would make it so much easier to come up with bad puns for headlines of our coverage of Roger Donaldson’s latest paranoid thriller. And who doesn’t want to make our lives easier? But I digress. So what’s “Umbra” about? Weren’t you listening? It’s a “paranoid thriller”. Apparently that’s all anyone knows about the movie, which Donaldson (”The Recruit”, “Thirteen Days”) is set to direct for Relativity Media. Variety says “Umbra” will be based on an original screenplay by newcomer Steven Karczynski, and plot details for the movie are under wraps. I guess it’s either really cool or high-concept, and they’re afraid people might steal it and have the whole thing end up one of those “it-never-ends-well” dueling projects. In any case, Websters say umbra means: 1: »

'Star Trek'

9 May 2009 9:00 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Every once in a while there comes along a movie that just sort of makes you smile. Unable to stop smiling, you walk out of the theater looking like an idiot. You’re not sure why, you can’t really place it except to say that everything worked together to create a kind of filmic synergy that just inspired euphoria.

Star Trek is just that movie.

I’ve never seen an episode of 'Star Trek' or any of its subsequent films. I think that should be admitted before I go on, to ward off those who would like to disregard a non-Trekkie and to those who, like me, who just want to know if it’s worth seeing.

It is.

The only way I can explain my new, almost obsessive adoration is in a laundry list, which I feel is appropriate because paragraphs of individual praise for every »

Captain Pike Beams Into Vulcan's 'Star Trek'

6 May 2009 11:46 AM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Canadian actor Bruce Greenwood, who plays Captain Christopher Pike in J.J. Abrams Star Trek, is to be a guest at a special screening of the film arranged for the residents of the Alberta town of Vulcan. The advance screening of the film was arranged for 300 residents of Vulcan after the town's tourist board failed in its bid to persuade Paramount let them host the film's world premiere. That has since taken place in Sydney, Australia.

Captain Pike is seen in trailers for Star Trek urging Chris Pine's Kirk to enlist in Starfleet. The character appeared twice in the original series of Star Trek on which the new film is based. Jeffrey Hunter played Pike in the originally unaired first pilot for the series, 'The Cage'. When footage from that pilot was incorporated into the two-part episode 'The Menagerie', a badly disfigured Pike was played by Sean Kenney.

Mid-Week Movie News Wrap Up - April 30, 2009

30 April 2009 12:07 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Another week means another wrap up.

This week:

We Tell No One about a new remake; Hollywood decides to tell us about The Day They Stole The Mona Lisa; Wolverine’s Danny Huston is beyond the Poseidon adventure; Maria Bello and Craig T. Nelson are Company Men and Amanda Peet Travels with Jack Black.

1. Miramax will produce a remake of hit French thriller Tell No One.

The original film saw a French doctor discover that his dead wife may be alive - don’t get funny -  I know that would mean she’s not really dead but get over it.

The film sounds like a 1990’s Hollywood thriller starring Michael Douglas or Harrison Ford (that’s not a bad thing). Jurassic Park producer and Spielberg protégé Kathleen Kennedy will produce the film.

The original film was based on a novel by Haralan Coben.

Roger Donaldson Will Steal the Mona Lisa

28 April 2009 9:59 PM, PDT | TheMovingPicture.net | See recent TheMovingPicture news »

Roger Donaldson, who most recently directed the Jason Statham film The Bank Job, is set to helm another fact-based heist flick. The filmmaker, Phoenix Pictures and Robert Chartoff are teaming for a screen adaptation of Seymour Reit’s book The Day They Stole the Mona Lisa. The book centers on the theft of the world's most famous painting from the Louvre in 1911. It was missing for more than two years before an Italian carpenter named Vincent Perugia showed up with the painting in Florence. The film will center on the conman who masterminded the theft. Mike Medavoy and Chartoff will produce with Lynn Hendee and Phoenix's Arnie Messer, Brad Fischer and David Thwaites. Phoenix is in post-production on the Martin Scorsese-directed Leonardo DiCaprio thriller Shutter Island. Donaldson’s previous credits include The World's Fastest Indian, The Recruit, Thirteen Days, Dante's Peak, Species and the 80s Tom Cruise comedy Cocktail. »

Director Roger Donaldson's filmography is all over the place -- No Way Out, Cocktail, Species, Dante's Peak, Thirteen Days -- but his next project seems to line up with his most recent one, the surprisingly fun Statham flick The Bank Job. Donaldson is adapting Seymour Reit's book "The Day They Stole The Mona Lisa," which rather bluntly describes the plot. The Phoenix Pictures film revolves around a conman and the theft of the famous Leonardo Da Vinci painting, which was »
