Geek Gossip: Hawkman, Green Lantern's Carol Ferris, Spider-Man 4, James Bond

45 minutes ago | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Today's round-up has a distinct superhero (and action hero) motif.

Where there are upcoming films, there is gossip and speculation and the hero genre is no exception.

Sadly, so much turns out to be fiction and fabrication so I am warning readers now to switch on their bulls**t detector and set it to maximum as we head deep into Rumourville.

Only the other day, I brought you the 'story' about Taylor Swift (the singer whose awards acceptance speech was disrupted by Kanye West storming on stage) being a top choice to star in a new Supergirl movie.

The project was allegedly called Supergirl! The Love Story. This rumour originated on Hollyscoop, the site that previously scooped poop when it told us Miley Cyrus was going to be cast as Batgirl. Is the needle on your bulls**t detector twitching yet? It should be.

Okay, so on to today's gossip. …

21 December 2009 10:01 AM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

"Sin City" actress Brittany Murphy's death at age of 32 yesterday stirred up reactions in the Twitter Report feed. Shock about her age pervaded many posts, but Kevin Smith probably stated his condolences the most eloquently.

Rob Liefeld came out of his "Avatar" screening marathon over the weekend with a new pick to play Cable on the big screen, and any X-Men movie producer sitting down with him in the near future can expect to hear the name Stephen Lang. Check out those tweets after the jump along with Jon Favreau's visit with "Iron Man 2" actor Mickey Rourke, Edgar Wright's time-travel plot and much more.

It's all in the Twitter Report for December 21, 2009.

Brittany Murphy pt 1: @ThatKevinSmith Never met her, but sad to hear about Brittany Murhpy. G'night, Ms. Murphy; hope you're rollin' with the homies someplace nice.

The latest Spider-Man movie is "in turmoil", a new report claims. Production on Sam Raimi's blockbuster has been put on hiatus over Christmas while filmmakers attempt to complete a shooting script, according to Indiewire's Thompson on Hollywood. Regular franchise producer Laura Ziskin has allegedly taken a backseat for the latest film, titled Spider-M4n, leaving Todd Black (The Taking Of Pelham 123) to deal with demands from Sony, Marvel and (more) …

10 Secrets to Spot in 'New Moon'

21 December 2009 7:33 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

There's always something to spot in the movies beyond the basic plot -- one little thing or a horde slipped in covertly to please the die-hard fans and watchful eyes. Sometimes it's so obvious it can't be missed, like Bruce Campbell's cameos in Spider-Man and Raimi's car, and sometimes it's so subtle there is no chance in hell to ever know -- like the period-authentic papers littering the jail in Watchmen. Now there's New Moon. The film has been out for a while (still holding the #5 spot), and now director Chris Weitz has shared with EW some of the little things he slipped into the second installment of The Twilight Saga.

Some are little basic things, like the hints of wolves showing up on everything from shirts to bowls, or the appropriateness of playing Strauss' "Die Fledermaus" in the Volturi's elevator. Others are a little funkier. Weitz threw in …

Things I Learned on the Weekend Party Circuit

21 December 2009 6:00 AM, PST | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

1. There’s girl-on-girl snogging between Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning as bisexual rock stars in The Runaways. That’s why it’s R-rated. 2. Spider-Man 4 is in turmoil. Laura Ziskin is not actively producing the fourth Spider-Man installment (tentatively titled Spider-M4n), and Todd Black (The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3, Knowing) has his hands full as the many cooks at Sony and Marvel try to finalize the shooting script. This time, director Sam Raimi wants to get his way on story and villains; last time around he thought he gave in too much to studio demands on action figures and the like, to the film’s detriment. … …

No Venom in Topher Grace's Future

21 December 2009 3:00 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

It was revealed in October that plans for a Venom movie spinning off of the Marvel Comics villain featured in Spider-Man 3 were moving forward, with Spider-Man 4 screenwriter Gary Ross doing rewrites and possibly directing the picture. Apparently, the spin-off will not involve the only actor to ever portray the popular comic book villain on the big screen, Topher Grace.

In a recent interview with MovieWeb, Grace seemed unsure of how to answer questions about the Venom movie. When asked if he was interested in returning to the role (even though his character apparently died at the end of Spider-Man 3), Grace said, "You know, I guess." He went on to say that he hadn't "heard anything" from Sony about the project. When asked to clarify whether or not he had any current plans to appear in a Venom spin-off, Grace conceded, "No, I don't think so."

A manga movie? A superhero flick? Cameron discusses what he's got in the pipeline.

The $73 million, blizzard-affected box office haul of "Avatar" has confirmed what we've long expected: James Cameron will get a chance to make a sequel to his alien-love-story-meets-kick-ass action flick. But it won't be the next film he takes on. What will? In numerous conversations, the director walked us through the projects he's contemplating with an eye toward what might be his next big-screen effort.

"Battle Angel Alita"

Cameron almost moved forward on this adaptation of Yukito Kishiro's popular manga instead of "Avatar," but ultimately chose to go with his big blue aliens — turns out that the "Avatar" practice could pay big "Battle Angel" dividends.

"Now we see it's good to have done 'Avatar' first before 'Battle Angel,' because the tricky scenes are where you're blending live-action photography, …

James Franco Channels a Kid and Adam Lambert on 'SNL'

20 December 2009 7:31 PM, PST | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

James Franco ended "Saturday Night Live" 2009 run on a high note when he appeared as the host on Saturday, December 19. The "Spider-Man" actor brought out the laughter with sketches and digital shorts in which he participated in a Mexican talk show, kissed a man in lips, and wore pajamas while dancing.

In his opening monologue, Franco said to the audience that it was his second time hosting the show. He also talked about his latest stint, "General Hospital", which many thought is a set back. Revealing that he makes career choice based on random suggestions, he brought out the rolling machine and started taking out the papers. Among the suggestions was "playing dead body in 'Law & Order'."

The sketches he did involve him donning a mustache to appear as a cheating boyfriend to a Latina actress played by Jenny Slate on "The Manuel Ortiz Show". Every time a guest is …

Topher Grace Is No Longer Venom

20 December 2009 3:41 PM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Topher Grace is no longer Venom Fans of the popular Spider-Man comics' villain, Venom, were excited when they heard that he would be one of the antagonists in Spider-Man 3 but the luke-warm reaction from fans after the movie was released left much doubt that the character would ever be seen on celluloid again. However, much to everyone's surprise, Marvel Studios founder Avi Arad announced in summer of 2007 that a spin-off featuring the character was in the works. Writer Jacob Aaron Estes was first commissioned to draft a script but after the studio rejected it, Zombieland writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese were brought on to write the screenplay. Wernick and Reese turned in two drafts of their script and the studio decided to push forward by bringing in Seabiscuit writer/director Gary Ross to do a rewrite and possibly direct the film. But the obvious question still remains, will Topher Grace, …

James Franco takes tongue-in-cheek comedy bit too literally

20 December 2009 11:20 AM, PST | Monsters and Critics | See recent Monsters and Critics news »

James Franco took tongue-in-cheek comedy a bit too literally as he hosted Saturday Night Live. The Spiderman star locked lips with three male comics on the show - and then a tree – as he presented the last SNL show of the decade. Franco snogged comedians Will Forte, Fred Armisen and Bill Hader in a skit about bringing his girlfriend home to his overly affectionate family – with Forte playing his loving granddad. In a later sketch, Franco showed his love for shrubbery - playing a Christmas tree dealer who bonds a little too much with his spruce. Boxing legend Mike Tyson made a surprise cameo in the episode – appearing with Keenan Thompson as the …

We'd like to take this moment to thank goodness for James Franco and Taylor Swift, without whom the 2009 season of Saturday Night Live would have been completely devoid of all laughter. Franco, in all his grinning glory, took the stage Saturday night for the final SNL of the decade, and while most of the writing was expectedly lackluster, the Spider-Man star has charm and charisma to spare which led to an overall funny show. As per usual, the monologue delivered the best moment of the night when the Golden Globe winner addressed his much-talked about decision to join ABC's daytime sudser General Hospital, and it actually all makes sense now. James Franco Hosts Last 'SNL' of Decade

20 December 2009 1:02 AM, PST | Reel Empire | See recent Reel Empire news »

"Spider-Man" star James Franco put his costume aside to host NBC's late night comedy show "Saturday Night Live". Last night's episode was not only the last of the year, but it was the last of the decade. The actor opened the show with a monologue poking fun at his turn on "General Hospital". He also had the audience roaring in a sketch that saw him as a young James Dean. Franco later joined "SNL" regular Andy Samberg in a sketch in which he played a dumb frat boy hazing a new pledge, haranguing the fraternity's new addition with hard-hitting questions. "Where do babies come from?!" Franco's frat boy yells at the new pledge. "Answer that!" I was actually very pleased with Franco's performances and hope to see him return to the show sometime soon.

'Saturday Night Live': James Franco kills it on last new 'SNL' of 2009

19 December 2009 8:56 PM, PST | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

James Franco delivered on "Saturday Night Live" this week.

The Columbia student poked fun at his TMZ photo, showcased his singing/dancing abilities and wasn't afraid to put on footie pajamas for a "Twizzle Wizzle Show" kids show spoof  that ended in Franco killing the child-like ensemble members.

But perhaps the best part of the evening -- Franco's sexuality. In one skit, Franco was all about locking lips with "SNL" cast members as a member of an overly affectionate family.

In Vincent Price's Christmas Special, Franco impersonates the late great James Dean (the actor he's often been compared to and played in a TV movie) next to Fred Armisen's Liberace, who talks Dean into a particular sexual act that could be performed at the piano.

Franco even extends his love to Christmas trees named Beth. The love never stops with this guy. He gives, and gives ... anywho, that …

The movie will be sponsored by director Sam Raimi, whose credits include the Spiderman and Evil Dead films. Fede Alvarez's short film "Ataque de Panico!"
