Movie Review - 'Law Abiding Citizen'

16 October 2009 1:34 AM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

Law Abiding Citizen

Starring Gerard Butler, Jamie Foxx, and Leslie Bibb

Directed by F. Gary Gray

Rated R

About a dozen years ago, the British evolutionist Richard Dawkins wrote a book called Climbing Mount Improbable. It has nothing to do with movies, but if Mount Improbable were real, I have no doubt that the new film Law Abiding Citizen would have its flag planted firmly at the summit.

I don't remember the last film I saw that took itself so seriously and presented itself so gravely and at the same time is so monumentally unlikely. Somehow, though, you could make the case that Law Abiding Citizen works, perhaps in spite of itself.

Movies like Pacific Heights and Arlington Road are a lot like this one, films dependent on a ridiculous chain of circumstances for absolutely anything to move forward. Roger Ebert's dissection of Arlington Road is a favorite of »

1999: A Year In Review (Part One)

7 October 2009 9:07 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Many films come out every year with critics and fans alike, compiling lists of their bests and worsts. There are also many films that fall between the cracks, only to be discovered years later. Many critics believe that one of the best years in cinema was 1939, when Gone with the Wind and The Wizard of Oz were released alongside many other classic gems.

Personally, I’ve always felt that 1999 was an epic year for movies, providing us with so many interesting films. In fact, 1999 was such a good year for movies that even some of the bad ones are still worth watching!

So, please sit back and put your memory caps on as Screen Rant takes on a retrospective of 1999 in the world of film.

In 1999, the world was a very different place. We were on the cusp of a new millennium and 9/11 was something that nobody - not even »

Ehren Kruger is Sole Writer For "Transformers 3"

7 October 2009 8:13 AM, PDT | Reel Empire | See recent Reel Empire news »

Robert Orci and Alex Kurtzman, the dynamic duo who wrote the original "Transfomers", had a little help penning the sequel from a writer who loves the twist endings.  This is of course referring to Ehren Kruger who's resume consists of films like "Scream 3", "Arlington Road" and "The Skeleton Key".  If you remember, Michael Bay confirmed on his official website that Kruger would be returning to write the third film, but he failed to mention Orci and Kurtzman in his announcement.  Turns out, Orici is a frequent contributor on the message board of producer Don Murphy and he announced today that neither he nor Kurtzman would be involved in the script for "Transformers 3".  I'm not sure if this is good news or bad news.  It's not like the script for the second installment was gold.  Anyway, we'll keep you posted. »

Transformers 3 Coming in 2011

1 October 2009 9:38 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Wow, Michael Bay is a serious glutton for punishment. Barely a breath-catching minute after the slavish effort that “Boom-Boom” Bay and the f/x wizards over at Industrial Light and Magic put in to get Transformers: Revenge of The Fallen in theaters this past summer, they’re proposing to run that marathon all over again in order to get Transformers 3 in theaters for Summer 2011.

Bay made the official announcement today - and he even threw in a funny little stab at Megan Fox in response to all the you-know-what she’s been talking about him recently. Oh, and Transformers 2 haters listen up: apparently they have a “great story” this time around (do you believe it?).

Here’s the the official message Bay posted on his official forum:

Well its official: We have a great Transformers 3 story. The release date is now July 1st 2011. Not 2012.

Today is Day One. »

Summer 2009 TV Preview

25 May 2009 7:28 PM, PDT | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

Lesbian/bi visibility on primetime American television this summer is not much better than it is the rest of the year — which is to say, it's pretty slim pickings.

Among the shows premiering or returning in the next few weeks, there are a few with supporting lesbian/bi characters (Mental, The Closer); one with an out actress in a supporting role (Hawthorne); and a reality show featuring two out female contestants (Top Chef Master).

Here's a review of the pilot or first new episode(s) of all four series, and a short list of the premiere/air dates of other shows that may interest you.

Warning: some mild spoilers, but no major plot points revealed

Mental (Drama, Fox)

Dates: Tuesdays at 9pm Pst/Est, premiering May 26

Cast: Chris Vance (Prison Break), Annabella Sciorra (Queens Supreme, The L Word), Derek Webster (Stargate), Jacqueline McKenzie (4400), Marisa Ramirez (General Hospital), Nicholas Gonzalez (CSI: Miami »

'Garbage Dreams' is the Reel Thing

7 May 2009 9:37 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

This year's Reel Current Award, which is presented by former U.S. Vice President Al Gore at the Nashville Film Festival, has been given to the documentary Garbage Dreams. Gore, a Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and the writer of An Inconvenient Truth, presents the award annually to a film that gives outstanding insight into a contemporary global issue.

Garbage Dreams follows three teenage boys born into the trash trade and growing up in the world's largest garbage village, on the outskirts of Cairo in Egypt. It is the home to 60,000 Zaballeen, Arabic for "garbage people." The Zaballeen survive by recycling 80 percent of the garbage they collect.

'Garbage Dreams' portrays our desire to live with dignity and to continue to recover, recycle and protect the environment," representatives of the Zaballen said in a joint statement. "Our heartfelt thanks to the Nashville Film Festival and Vice President Al Gore for this wonderful honor, »

David Cronenberg's Videodrome Being Remade

27 April 2009 9:00 AM, PDT | WorstPreviews.com | See recent Worst Previews news »

Universal Pictures will remake the 1983 David Cronenberg-directed thriller "Videodrome," with Ehren Kruger (Arlington Road, The Ring) set to write the script and produce with partner Daniel Bobker. The original "Videodrome" starred James Woods as the head of Civic TV Channel 83, who makes his station relevant by programming "Videodrome," a series that depicts torture and murder that transfixes viewers. The new picture will modernize the concept, infuse it with the possibilities of nano-technology and blow it up into a large-scale sci-fi action thriller. Cronenberg has no role in the film as yet. He is currently working on "The Matarese Circle" as a starring vehicle for Tom Cruise and Denzel Washington. »

Cronenberg's Videodrome Set For Remake

26 April 2009 11:50 PM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

David Cronenberg’s Videodrome has become the latest 80s cult classic to take a spin on the remake merry-go-round, with Universal today announcing plans for a new version to be written and produced by Ehren Kruger.Cronenberg’s 1983 original, featured a tour de force from James Woods (does he do any other kind of performance?) as a sleazy cable TV boss who gets mixed up with an insidious TV programme called Videodrome which begins to infuse his mind with shocking hallucinations, before apparently infecting his body with a series of gruesome mutations (one of Cronenberg’s favourite themes), including the now-infamous ‘videotape/vaginal’ slit in Woods’ stomach. It’s one of Cronenberg’s most effective, creepy and bizarre films – so naturally the remake is set to take the story into the big-budget sci-fi thriller realm, where there’s a good chance the offbeat vibe and intriguing themes will be swamped by special effects. »

Cronenberg's 'Videodrome' Getting Remake

26 April 2009 9:10 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Ironically, just days after David Cronenberg stated unequivocally that he has no interest in remaking any of his old horror films, comes word today from the trades that Universal Pictures plans to remake his 1983 thriller Videodrome. Ehren Kruger (Arlington Road, The Ring) has been tapped to write the script and will produce with partner Daniel Bobker.

The original Videodrome starred James Woods as the head of Civic TV Channel 83, who makes his station relevant by programming 'Videodrome' a series that depicts torture and murder that transfixes viewers.

The new film will modernize the concept, infuse it with the possibilities of nano-technology and blow it up into a large-scale sci-fi action thriller.

Cronenberg has no role in the film as of this writing, and based upon previous comments from the Canadian director, we'd be surprised if he ever does.

Cronenberg is currently working on The Matarese Circle—a starring »

Skeet Ulrich Returns to CBS with Back

12 March 2009 10:00 AM, PDT | WorstPreviews.com | See recent Worst Previews news »

"Jericho" star Skeet Ulrich has been tapped as the lead of CBS' drama pilot "Back," which centers on a man (Ulrich) who returns home to discover he was reported missing eight years earlier, after September 11th. He must reconnect with his family and a world that has moved on without him. Dean Widenmann ("CSI: Miami") penned the script and is executive producing with "Hairspray" producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron. Mark Pellington (The Mothman Prophecies, Arlington Road) is directing. Ulrich was involved in the successful grass-roots campaign to save the cult drama "Jericho" when CBS canceled it after one season. In a rare reversal, the network brought the show back for a second season. In addition to his starring role on "Jericho," which is airing on the CW, Ulrich also appeared in the TNT mini-series "Into the West" and has wrapped the Sony Screen Gems feature "Armored." »
