Agents of Shield, Season 2, Episode 22: “Sos Part 2”
Written by Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen
Directed by Billy Gierhart
Airs Tuesdays at 9pm (Et) on ABC
Audiences should consider themselves warned that “Sos”, the two-part season 2 finale of Agents of Shield, does not mess around. Five named characters (plus two very unlucky Shield redshirts) die, Coulson loses his forearm like Ash from Evil Dead, and Simmons is dragged off, Drag Me to Hell-style, by that mysterious Kree stone. (Did the writers have a Sam Raimi marathon just before writing this episode?) A few storylines get resolved, like the May-Dr. Garner relationship and Cal protecting Skye, but there is also a lot of set-up for season 3 in the midst of this epic showdown between Shield and Jiaying. For everything it is setting up, however,...

Agents of Shield, Season 2, Episode 20: “Scars”
Written by Rafe Judkins and Lauren LeFranc
Directed by Bobby Roth
Airs Tuesdays at 9pm (Et) on ABC
In Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America talks about how Shield is about saving people and that’s “how Shield should work.” While the Avengers are waxing nostalgic about their days at Nick Fury’s Shield, remembering the super-cool heli-carrier while forgetting Fury’s secret alien weaponry, present-day Shield is not really all that pretty and shiny. If anything, they are dealing with the exact same problems that Tony Stark is struggling with in Age of Ultron, and Nick Fury struggled with before him in Winter Soldier. Plot-wise, “Scars” only ties in loosely with Age of Ultron, but thematically, both should really be seen to fully appreciate each one.
In “Scars”, the story picks up after Shield shows up with the heli-carrier in Sokovia and saves the day.

Agents of Shield, Season 2, Episode 19: “The Dirty Half Dozen”
Written by Brent Fletcher and Drew Z. Greenberg
Directed by Kevin Tancharoen
Airs Tuesdays at 9pm (Et) on ABC
After an overloaded plot in “The Frenemy of My Enemy”, nitpicky writing inconsistencies in “Melinda”, and Lincoln’s exposition dump in “Afterlife”, Agents of Shield delivers one of the best episodes of the show so far with “The Dirty Half Dozen”. Picking up right where “The Frenemy of My Enemy” leaves off, Gordon rescues Skye and Calvin and brings them back to Afterlife. When he returns for Lincoln, however, he is injured and narrowly escapes being captured by Hydra. Skye is determined to rescue Lincoln, despite Jiaying’s objections, and she returns to Shield to save Deathlok and Lincoln. As always, other characters, including Coulson and Gonzales, have hidden agendas and their own reasons for agreeing to the mission.

Well, that was everything I was afraid it would be. With Avengers: Age of Ultron just a few days from its U.S. release, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. spent this week's "The Dirty Half Dozen" reverting to one of its least appealing permutations: a shameless promotional tool for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The episode even used its final minutes to air a special extended preview for Age of Ultron, as if to say, "Hey, who cares about this show, anyway? Go see the new Avengers movie — in theaters this weekend!"Marvel is clearly happy to use Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. as an agent of Ultron, despite the not-inconsiderable consequences to the show's narrative, tone, and general sense of forward momentum. Yes, we lose the Bus (a bland, unappealing set) and Bakshi (a bland, unappealing villain), but the status quo is more or less restored by the end of the mission. More important,...

This week’s Avengers-referencing Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. had a lot of air-punching fan-pleasing moments, but also raised a few questions…
This review contains spoilers.
2.19 The Dirty Half Dozen
Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s tie-in episodes are often a little difficult. Sometimes they come across a little ‘no, no, really – Thor was just here! Like, minutes ago!’ Thankfully, though, on occasion they’re much better, with the episodes surrounding The Winter Soldier remaining arguably the best content the show has ever produced.
How did this week’s Avengers: Age Of Ultron episode fare, then? Well, to be honest, somewhere in between the two, but leaning in the positive direction. Winter Soldier-era S.H.I.E.L.D. aside, this is probably the next best allusion to the movies we’ve ever had.
Both iterations of S.H.I.E.L.D. teaming up to attack a Hydra base, with Dr. List inside,...

A review of tonight's "Agents of Shield" — as well as thoughts on the current state of the franchise as we near the release of another Marvel movie — coming up just as soon as my gift is spinning really fast to collect gold rings... "The Dirty Half Dozen" conspires to bring Coulson's original team together for the first time this season. For one reason or another, newbies like Hunter and Bobbi and Agent 33 are sidelined, while Ward and Skye both wind up back on the Bus one last time(*) with the old gang. The point seems to be to illustrate how different these people have become since they last traveled together: everyone wants Ward dead, Skye has superpowers, May doesn't trust Coulson, etc. (*) And even if this configuration of characters comes together again, they'll need a new vehicle to travel in, since Coulson sacrifices the Bus, "Star Trek III"-style, as...

Agents of Shield is racing into the release of Avengers: Age of Ultron with guns blazing (literally) to deliver one of the most entertaining episodes of the season. Sure, it's a bit cookie-cutter. But "The Dirty Half Dozen" not only brings together the original six, it also delivers on all the main points that make the Marvel Universe the juggernaut it has become over the past decade or so.
The story in and of itself is nothing special, but this one is all about reunions, making nice (even if only pretend) and coming together toward the endpoint that we've been working backwards from ever since the Avengers sequel was written and shot before anyone picked up an Agents of Shield season 2 script.

As such, last week's Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. episode teased elements of Joss Whedon's superhero crossover spectacular, while tomorrow's episode The Dirty Half Dozen is set to make the connections very overt indeed.
There are no spoilers for the film here, we'd argue, so have a look at these clips if you fancy a tease of how things are going to connect...

Agents of Shield, Season 2, Episode 18: “The Frenemy of My Enemy”
Written by Monica Owusu-Breen and Paul Zbyszewski
Directed by Karen Gaviola
Airs Tuesdays at 9pm (Et) on ABC
“The Frenemy of My Enemy” is an episode with a whole lot going on, probably a little too much going on. The return of Ward, Hydra seeking out super-humans, and Cal’s day out with Skye all come to a head in a big showdown in Milwaukee. Plus, Simmons and May are clashing over Gonzalez’s Shield, and one of Jiaying’s super-humans goes missing on a camping trip. As a result, everything except for Skye and Cal’s father-daughter date feels rushed, but thanks mostly in part to Kyle MacLachlan’s performance, the episode is still very entertaining, despite its minor flaws.
One of the biggest problems with the return of Ward and Coulson getting into Hydra is that their...
