*Cht is nearing 100 posts, so we decided to induct Radha Mitchell who starred in Silent Hill and Rogue, one of the best killer animal movies ever! You can also catch Micthell in Breck Eisner's upcoming Crazies remake on February 26, 2010. Mitchell has appeared nude in High Art (1998) and Feast of Love. She was also recently in Surrogates with Bruce Willis and starred in Pitch Black with Vin Diesel. A very impressive resume and the reason we are welcoming her to our Cht section. »

It's funny but Surrogates deserves the title I, Robot more than the Will Smith movie that came out in 2004. First and foremost, was Will ever a robot in his movie? Hell no but in Surrogates Bruce Willis can claim full metal jacket status. Secondly, James Cromwell, the actor that played the guy that made the robots in I, Robot, well, he’s the maker of the robots in Surrogates. It's like the people that made Surrogates saw I, Robot and said to themselves, "Hey, that’s a neat idea. Why don’t we do something like that too?"
At the heart of its story Surrogates has a better hook than I, Robot: what if you could live your life in a robot body? You could jump off a building and be guaranteed to survive, you could speed date all weekend long and never have to worry about getting a social disease, »

A return trip is in the cards to Silent Hill with news a sequel is moving forward. Per The Hollywood Reporter, screenwrtier Roger Avary and producer Samuel Hadida, both of whom worked on the 2006 Silent Hill movie, are already on board for the sequel. Their company, Davis Films, aims to begin shooting the sequel next year after Resident Evil 4 wraps. The original Silent Hill starred Radha Mitchell from Pitch Black and the upcoming Surrogates film. There is no word on whether her character will make a return appearance to the supernaturally possessed town. Avary is also working on a script for Return to Castle Wolfenstein though no updates on that project are available at this time. »

Reed’s Bargain Bin [1] is a recurring column where Reed Farrington tells us about a movie he bought for under $5, and whether or not he regrets the purchase. Even though Film Junk followers would probably prefer to read current Tiff film reviews than a review of an older science fiction film, I have decided to submit this review of “Babylon A.D.” And at the risk of further enforcing the view that I have a poor taste in films, my review is generally a favorable one in contrast to popular opinion. I was aware that this film did poorly at the box office, but I didn’t realize how many bad reviews this film received until after I had watched the film and checked out the reviews on the Internet. The reason why I watched this film is that I try to watch all the high profile science fiction movies regardless of audience reception. »

This post contains some vague spoilers for A Perfect Getaway.
David Twohy's A Perfect Getaway was not destined for commercial glory. Pitched as a generic tropical-set actioner, with no big-name stars and little marketing muscle behind it, its middling box office performance was a foregone conclusion. Last weekend's $5.7 million result seemed pretty much right.
Depending on your point of view, this is either fitting or tragic. Because David Twohy is one of the most fascinating writers and directors working in genre film today. Hollywood has plenty of talented technical craftsmen -- filmmakers who can make an action movie crackle. But it has precious few people who are consistently doing interesting things with action films, thrillers, science-fiction and horror. Twohy is not content to deliver generically competent entertainment. There's always a twist.

Despite the critical drubbing of Chronicles of Riddick, neither star Vin Diesel nor writer/director David Twohy have given up on making another Riddick movie. Diesel used his Facebook page to announce some news about the next installment of Riddick:
The Riddick discussion is about rating now .... Though Hollywood likes their PG Ratings, the next chapter in the Cor series was always envisioned as an R rating, like Pitch Black ....
One Studio exec suggested doing both The Underverse and The Furyan, (working titles) at the same time, allowing us an R rating for the first and a PG rating for the second.
The good news- David Twohy's script comes in next month.
Diesel has said that he and Twohy planned for Chronicles to be the start of a trilogy, one that would take place sequentially before Pitch Black, and that he and Twohy could make the next two Riddick movie simultaneously, »

Earlier this month, director David Twohy (Pitch Black, The Chronicles of Riddick) talked about a new Riddick movie, saying that if he wants to make the new installment his way, he will have to do it independently and then sell it territory by territory. Now, Vin Diesel has updated his Facebook page, stating that talks are currently going on with a studio. "The Riddick discussion is about rating now," he said. "Though Hollywood likes their PG Ratings, the next chapter in the Cor series was always envisioned as an R rating, like Pitch Black." He continued: "One Studio exec suggested doing both "The Underverse" and "The Furyan," (working titles) at the same time, allowing us an R rating for the first and a PG rating for the second. Science Fiction movies that you can remember for more then a couple of years are rare. A movie will attract your attention as it is hyped, entertain you moderately at the theatre and then pass into the general cloud of Sci-Fi history. Maybe you pick up the DVD in 8 months or if it was a bomb, a couple. For me, “Pitch Black”, starring Vin Diesel, was different. “Pitch Black” has stayed with me. My memory of that movie even survived a less than stellar sequel called “The Chronicles of Riddick”. Pitch Black tells the story of a very laid back and confident hard core criminal( Riddick) being transported along with other travelers to someplace far, far away. On the way they crash on a world not well designed for visitors. The character of Riddick as portrayed by Vin Diesel is special. He deserves another chance. Luckily, movies starring Vin have »

Wow, it's been a while since I last did one of these bad boys, but today we have a good healthy dose of rumors, speculation and a few side notes worth getting into... Let's get started. A prequel to last year's Death Race is now rumored to be in the offing with director Paul W.S. Anderson at the center of it and Tony Giglio aboard to write a script, based on a story by Anderson. Giglio may also direct. Word is the script will delve into the past of the driver known as Frankenstein who died at the opening of the 2008 remake. Sounds like a direct-to-dvd prospect to me considering the first one only generated $74 million worldwide on a $45 million budget. [Styd] Rumors of Megan Fox nude scenes in Jonah Hex have now started circulating as 13-year-old boys and 65-year-old men now look forward to August 6, 2010. Vin Diesel recently updated his Facebook profile with some new thoughts on future installments of the proposed The Chronicles of Riddick franchise. Though the last film arrived in 2004 with little fanfare and not much cult enthusiasm, that hasn't stopped the action maven from contemplating future adventures for his sci-fi hero. Here's what Vin had to say: The Riddick discussion is about rating now. Though Hollywood likes their PG Ratings, the next chapter in the Cor series was always envisioned as an R rating, like Pitch Black. One Studio exec suggested doing both "The Underverse" and "The Furyan", (working titles) at the same time, allowing us an R rating for the first and a PG rating for the second. No sequel has been greenlit just yet. We will keep you informed as more information comes in.

The players: Director: David Twohy, Writer: David Twohy, Cast: Steve Zahn, Timothy Olyphant, Milla Jovovich, Kiele Sanchez, Marley Shelton, Chris Hemsworth
Facts of interest: Twohy also directed "Pitch Black" and "The Chronicles of Riddick."
The plot: Two newlyweds travel to Hawaii for a hiking trip only to discover two dangerous killers are on the loose not far away from them.
Our thoughts: David Twohy’s “A Perfect Getaway” is one of those thrillers trying to mislead audiences so it can pull off a huge twist in the end, but as far as I’m concerned, it clearly failed to surprise me. The film is by no means a total waste of time, but its lack of suspense and inability to engage my interest makes it something I would not want to revisit. »

“A Perfect Getaway” is a thriller that never thrills. That is a recipe for disaster in that genre. It doesn’t help matters that the director goes so over the top with the action in the last twenty minutes that it is laughable. Cliff (Steve Zahn) and Cydney (Milla Jovovich) are two newlyweds ready for an adventure in Hawaii. On their way to the trails, they meet two hitchhikers Cleo (Marley Shelton) and Kale (Chris Hemsworth). The encounter is brief and turbulent. It puts Cliff and Cydney on edge. The newlyweds get to the dangerous trails. A local warns of many twists and turns ahead. Director David Twohy (The Chronicles of Riddick, Pitch Black) peppers his screenplay throughout with this foreshadowing. I gather that his tongue is firmly in his cheek with this ploy. I found it a bit annoying after a while. »

Hiking through the wild, secluded trails, Cliff and Cydney think they are in complete paradise, until the couple come across a group of frightened female hikers discussing the gruesome murders of another couple of newlyweds just hours before their arrival. They now begin to question if they should just keep moving forward with their plans, or whether they should turn back. The summer's almost over, and so far it's been an incredibly mixed bag movie-wise. Star Trek, The Hangover, and Harry Potter are some of the few deserving wins on the box-office side while most of the supposed summer blockbusters including X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Terminator: Salvation, Bruno, and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen all failed to make a financial mark (yeah, that last one was just wishful thinking because the movie sucked so much ass). Quality-wise, many of the summer's best films have actually been of the decidedly smaller variety including 500 Days of Summer, The Hurt Locker, Moon, and Away We Go. Which brings us to the final month of summer 2009... August 7th GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra What is it? Hasbro's most popular toy line for boys comes to life with an advance military team of real American heroes fighting against an evil organization with cool gadgets, deadly weapons, and »
