Welcome to Part 2 of our 1999 Movie Retrospective. The final year of the last century was one hell of a cinematic ride and it offered some outstanding films for lovers of cinema.
Now be aware that this is not a definitive list of the films released - it’s a brief rundown highlighting interesting films that should be seen (although not always for the right reasons).
You can check out the first part (A-e) here or continue reading to see the other gems that were released in 1999.
Fight Club was a box office disappointment ten years ago, but it has gained a Huge cult following since - and it must have made an absolute mint on DVD. Brad Pitt and Edward Norton star in this David Fincher directed adaptation of Chuck Palahniuk’s now-famous novel. The film is another example of world perspective from a late 90s view point. »

We come to Fantastic Fest for the weird. I've said it a few times before, and it is worth saying again. When you come to a festival such as this one, you see plenty of action movies, plenty of martial arts, sci-fi and of course, some horror. You also see some weird. In the weird column, I would like to enter Kenny Begins. It is quite simply the weirdest, most insane and possibly most deviously enjoyable films that I've seen here at Fantastic Fest. It's Swedish. And that's just the beginning. The film follows the converging stories of two misfits, a "galaxy hero" wannabe from a distant sector of the universe, who is trying to graduate starfighter school before the money runs out and his mom makes him become a hairdresser. On Earth, we meet Pontus, a gimpy, slow outcast who is picked on daily because he lives "on the other side of the tracks." When »

The Fall season always means two things -- it's time to wrap up marathon training and start planning Halloween costumes. Edward Norton and Paris Hilton are on top of those tasks, respectively. Norton's planning on running with some Kenyans in New York on November 1st, while Paris is hard a work costume hunting, but you'll have click on down to see where she's shopping.
Also today, Alyssa Milano emphatically denied that she is pregnant, so rumor-mongers back off. Read on to check out what she said, as well as where John Hodgman has been reading about Juggalos, what the weather is like on the "Eclipse" set and what Paul Reubens would have looked like in your high school yearbook. It's all in the Twitter-Wood report for September 29, 2009.

In the two weeks it has existed, "The Jay Leno Show" has mostly been a study in stale stand-up and retread bits from Jay's run on "The Tonight Show." But so far his lineup of guests has been pretty interesting. He lucked into his conversation with Kanye West last week, and last night he welcomed another former MTV Vma star to his gigantic set: Pee-Wee Herman. Paul Reubens, the man inside Herman's head, has used the Pee-Wee character sparingly since his arrest for indecent exposure back in 1991, but he's bringing the persona back for a stage show in Los Angeles starting in November.
Reubens, who became an icon when the movie "Pee-Wee's Big Adventure" and the Saturday morning show "Pee-Wee's Playhouse" became gigantic hits, sat across from Leno in his desk-free interview set-up to joke about his abstinence ring, his early experiences with the theater and how confused he always »

Paul Reubens, better known as Pee Wee Herman appeared on "The Jay Leno Show" last night. While that might not quite top Letterman's landmark Barack Obama interview from the night before, the first time a sitting president appeared on the nightly talk show, it's still pretty damn cool. The word of the day was apparently "abstinence ring."
Pretty cool to see Pee Wee here as opposed to Reubens. Nothing against the guy; he was hilarious in "Mystery Men" (yes, I said it). Pee Wee was a classic though, one who was prematurely cast from the limelight after a highly public arrest and scandal embraced his real-life alter ego.
I'm pretty impressed at how naturally Reubens falls into the character today, so many years later. You can see the changes wrought by age if you look really carefully, but the expressions, the mannerisms, the high, nasally voice-- pure Pee Wee. Here's »

Ellen Page, Rainn Wilson, and Liv Tyler are set to star in "Super," a superhero comedy. James Gunn, the guy who wrote "Dawn of the Dead" and the two "Scooby-Doo" films, and directed the criminally under-seen "Slither" wrote the script and is set to direct.
Production is set for December.
Wilson will play an average guy who takes on a superhero alter ego known as Crimson Bolt after watching his wife (Tyler) fall for a charming drug dealer. His super powers? Swinging a wrench at anyone who comes in his way.
Sounds charming, and the cast is great, but superhero comedies, especially the pseudo-superhero ones, never work! Remember the movie "Mystery Men" starring Ben Stiller, Hank Azaria, Janeane Garofalo, William H. Macy, Paul Reubens, Geoffrey Rush, Lena Olin, Eddie Izzard, and Greg Kinnear? Great cast right? But the film failed to fly critically and commercially. »

Dane Cook has a proposal today for Ellen DeGeneres' replacement on "Ellen," now that she's going to be busy judging on "American Idol." Check it out, and see what you think. Cook leads the Twitter-Wood playlist today, right ahead of "Sorority Row" star Leah Pipes and Selena Gomez, who misses Freddie Prinze Jr.'s TV show "Freddie."
Eddie Izzard, Ice-t and previously featured photo subject Steve Agee all entered the running for the Twitter Pic of the Day today -- and though only one could come out on top, I've ranked them below, eventually giving Izzard the break because, well, he's run 39 marathons now, and that's worth acknowledgement. After all, how many have you run lately? Congrats to him, and congrats to you for getting to read the Twitter-Wood report for September 10, 2009.

I have been intrigued by Defendor since it went into development. It's not every day you see an indie "superhero" movie, and even rarer to see anyone using the comic craze to spin an original story. Watchmen may have deconstructed an awful lot of myth, but I feel like there's still things to say about the need for costumed vigilantes, especially as each generation discovers them all over again.
Defendor is one of the selections at the 2009 Toronto Film Festival, and the early buzz on it is pretty positive so far. Directed by Peter Stebbings, it stars Woody Harrelson, Elias Koteas, Kat Dennings, and Sandra Oh. It's the story of an unassuming man named Arthur Poppington, who lives in his own comic-book based world, and patrols the streets as the superhero Defendor. He's on the hunt for his arch-nemesis, Captain Industry, who he believes killed his mother and who deals in weapons and drugs. »

This is looking like a good year for Woody Harrelson comedies. We've got Zombieland on the way, and here's a trailer for the Canadian superhero spoof Defendor. The $4m debut of director Peter Stebbings, it sees Harrelson as Arthur Poppington, who masquerades by night as the titular, tin-hatted lone avenger, on the trail of his arch enemy Captain Industry, with marbles and lime juice his weapons of choice. We love that the D on his costume is duct tape, and his Green Hornet-style eyemask is drawn on like Groucho Marx's moustache. The trailer hits all the right funny notes and plays up the Batman parody, but also hints that there might be more to this. Short clips of a frustrated and confused out-of-costume Poppington suggest some deeper moments, so this may well turn out to be as much Unbreakable as Mystery Men.Also in the cast are Kat Dennings, »

There are times when Ben Stiller seems to own comedy. It.s an odd notion considering the guy.s made some pretty mediocre films (Envy, The Heartbreak Kid). But often enough, he releases something that hits all of the right notes and makes you realize just how talented he truly his (Tropic Thunder, Mystery Men). The dude.s got a grasp on absurdist satire. That.s why it.s not a surprise to see the video that Movieline has gotten hold of. It.s an exclusive and likely never supposed to be seen video that has Stiller tearing 20th Century Fox a new one, as well as himself. In the video, Stiller takes shots at Fox.s executives, their rich and artistic library of movies (Explosion! Explosion! Wave!), but gives Slumdog Millionaire a pass. The video was likely made for employees at his production company Red Hour as well as »

Hugh Jackman'S portrayal of Wolverine has become popular with many fans for the character's distinctive leather jackets.
Jackman plays the metal-clawed mutant in the previous X-Men trilogy and in current release X-Men Origins: Wolverine, where he wears another variation on the character's classic biker jacket.
Replicas of the jackets have become a must-have for many viewers. Last year, I reported how one enthusiast had created an online store selling the jackets when he finally found a quality duplicate of the version worn by Jackman on screen.
The website, Logan's Closet, is now offering a replica of the jacket seen in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, at a price of $600 to $760 depending on size. The site also sells the jackets worn by Wolverine in the first X-Men film and in X-Men: The Last Stand, as well as the jackets worn in Terminator, House, Bangkok Dangerous, I Am Legend, Biker Boyz and Mystery Men. »

With Watchmen arriving in theaters this weekend, it's once again time to start talking superheroes. But instead of listing the coolest weapons or names or fight scenes, Moviefone wants to know which superhero costumes are the best ... and worst. How does Michael Keaton's Batman suit compare to, say, Jennifer Gardner's Elektra look? Which costume turns you on more: Silk Spectre II or Catwoman? Or what about Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man suit up against ... um, Ben Affleck's Daredevil? (I'm sorry, but I still can't believe Affleck played a superhero at one point - worst casting choice ever.) So check out the costume gallery below, and let us know your favorites (and least favorites [cough] Clooney's Batman [cough]) in the comments.
Superhero Costumes - Vote for Your Favorites Superpowers are nice and all, but just as vital to the superhero mystique is the costume. Can you imagine someone trying to »

Ben Stiller has been playing the same character for at least ten years and in that time it's really only worked twice. The first time he pulled it off, it was as Mr. Furious in the highly underrated superhero comedy Mystery Men. Since then he's just regurgitated that character over and over again, minus the leather jacket and penchant for ineffectually fighting crime. And though it was only a retread of that same character, it's hard to argue against his portrayal of Gaylord Focker in Meet the Parents. Pitting that character against Robert DeNiro was comedic gold... once. Unfortunately we're now headed for a third round of Gaylord. The long gestating third Meet the Parents installment has been given the go-ahead, according to Riskey Business Blog. Jay Roach won't return as director, but Ben Stiller, Robert DeNiro, and Owen Wilson (who may have a bigger part this time around) are »

If you put a gun to Empire’s head (please don’t; hypothetical only) and asked us to name the three funniest people working in comedy right now, it’s entirely possible that we’d come up with Robert Downey Jr. (he is Kirk Lazarus; ‘nuff said…), Tina Fey (30 Rock is the funniest Us sitcom at the moment) and Ben Stiller (ok, we’re reaching a little with that one; just a little, mind…).Which is why we’re delighted to hear that the trio have signed on to lend their voices to DreamWorks Animation’s latest behemoth, a superhero spoof provisionally titled Master Mind.Given how, well, incredible The Incredibles was, it’s a brave animated movie that treads on similar territory – but Master Mind may well skew a little darker, given that it’s about a supervillain who finds himself without a purpose in life after he finally »
