Cate Blanchett Proves That Santa Is Real

25 December 2009 6:50 PM, PST | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

Australian actress Cate Blanchett is determined to make sure her kids keep believing in Santa Claus - and she makes a mammoth effort every year to prove he's real. The "Elizabeth" star has three sons with her screenwriter husband Andrew Upton - Dashiell, eight, Roman, five, and Ignatius, 18 months.

Blanchett admits she loves making Christmas special for her kids, and she goes all out to reinforce their belief in Santa. She says, "We get up to all kinds of fun at Christmas. We always feed Santa Claus - that's a big tradition. I put my reindeer socks on and sprinkle flour so it looks like the reindeer have come down. But you do have that sense that you only have a few years before the kids say, 'You're lying to me!'" »

The Notable Films of 2010: Part Five

23 December 2009 10:10 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Hippie Hippie Shake

Opens: 2010

Cast: Cillian Murphy, Sienna Miller, Max Minghella, Emma Booth, Lee Ingleby

Director: Beeban Kidron

Summary: Follows the love story of Oz editor Richard Neville and Louise Ferrier. Neville and his cohorts launch the London edition of Oz amidst the 1960s counterculture and are subsequently put on trial for distributing a sexually explicit issue.

Analysis: One of the most troubled productions in Working Title's history, 'Hippie' began development back in 1998 but failed to get beyond script stage both in 1999 and in 2002 when "Elizabeth" helmer Shekhar Kapur was attached to direct. Filming finally got underway late 2007 with director Beeban Kidron in charge and shooting seemed to proceed without issue aside from feminist author Germaine Greer being vehemently unhappy about being depicted on film.

Actually the film scored quite a bit of free press for a skinny dipping scene where full-frontal shots of actress Sienna Miller shooting the sequence »

New International Trailer For Robin Hood. Now With More Arrows.

21 December 2009 1:08 PM, PST | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

Another trailer for Robin Hood has appeared, this time it's the international version. Why is it the internation versions of posters and trailers are almost always better than the domestic ones? Why do we get screwed? After all, we're the ones who made the movie, so why do they get such cool stuff overseas? Our domestic marketing people suck. Anyways, this trailer shows more of Russell Crowe channeling Gladiator, Braveheart, and now Robin Hood, while Cate Blanchett reaches back into her bag of Elizabeth and makes her dopey looking scream face when she swings a sword.Oscar winner Russell Crowe stars as the legendary figure known by generations as "Robin Hood," whose exploits have endured in popular mythology and ignited the imagination of those who share his spirit of adventure and righteousness. In 13th century England, Robin and his band of marauders confront corruption in a local village and lead »

Movie Review - 'The Young Victoria'

18 December 2009 12:52 AM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

The Young Victoria

Starring Emily Blunt, Rupert Friend, and Paul Bettany

Directed by Jean-Marc Vallée

Rated PG

It's not exactly true that every year about this time, a British costume drama arrives in theaters pushing for Oscar glory. It's not exactly untrue, either. Last year it was Keira Knightley's The Duchess, and the year before that it was Knightley's Atonement and Cate Blanchett's sequel to Elizabeth.

So, at the very least, we're getting our fair share of this sort of thing, which brings us to The Young Victoria, a bio-pic of the longest tenured British royal. Victoria reigned for almost 65 years and is certainly worth a movie, probably a better one, even.

It isn't that The Young Victoria is a bad film, just indifferent. It is easy to look at, of course, following the blueprint established over recent years. It features a nice, mostly convincing performance by Emily Blunt. »

Check Out 'Crazy Heart,' 'Young Victoria' And 'A Town Called Panic' In This Week's unLimited

With "Avatar" receiving great reviews and topping critics' awards, the 3-D sci-fi blockbuster will be a huge hit with all kinds of moviegoers this weekend, not just the mainstream audiences that typically go for lots of action and special effects. But if you're looking for an alternative, at least until the crowds die down, there are a few smaller movies opening this week that might be of interest. Actually, two of these spotlighted limited release offerings open tomorrow, so you might have time to see them before you have a chance to see James Cameron's latest. And if you're not in one of the cities playing these films this weekend, hopefully they'll garner enough Oscar buzz to warrant a wider release soon enough.

DC Flies Clooney Skies

7 December 2009 4:24 PM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Last year the DC Film Critics Association gave Slumdog millions (of prizes). This year they express their desire to fly George Clooney's friendly skies. I'm not here to judge (well not in this particular sentence) as I'm totally in love with Up in the Air, too. But then I just saw it and am still fanning myself from the heat coming off of Clooney & Farmiga. I need a little distance and a cold shower before I commit to any "best!" notions. Thankfully I allow myself that. Most organizations do not. Hence the hasty decision making.

I didn't share their nominees with you yesterday because I found them vaguely embarrassing, like the assembled journos all just came in late and frazzled having left their notes on the Metrorail. Instead of thinking it through they scribbled the names of Oscar buzz du jour types and called it a day. My point »

We are indeed talking about Shekar Kapoor, the man with the 'Midas Touch'. Shekar is also the man who is our 'Birthday Baby' for the day! Having started his career working with a multi-national oil company, Shekar moved to Great Britain in 1970, and worked as an Accountant and Management Consultant. After that, was what one would call as 'Bollywood Calling'. After having acted in many serials and films, he gave Bollywood its first ever taste of 'Innocence' through his first film Masoom, a film that, till today, stands as one of the highlights of the magical tinsel town. Sundance Reveals 2010 Non-Competition Slate

4 December 2009 5:24 PM, PST | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

On Wednesday the Sundance Film Festival unveiled the films competing in late January 2010.  Yesterday they announced the rest of the line-up of independent films vying for attention for industry types and the curious public.

The entire list of 53 films is below, but here are a few that stood out to me from the premieres alone:

Mumblecore directors the Duplass Brothers, have a new, untitled movie starring an unusually high-profile cast compared to their usual improvisational crew.  John C. Reilly, Marisa Tomei, Jonah Hill, and Catherine Keener.  Reilly and Keener are actually in two films at the 2010 festival.

The Company Men, starring Ben Affleck, Kevin Costner, Maria Bello, Tommy Lee Jones, Chris Cooper, Rosemarie DeWitt about corporate downsizing.

Rodrigo Cortes’ Buried, starring Ryan Reynolds as a man buried alive in a coffin.  I’ve read the script and its great.  More on that as soon as I can.

Full Sundance line-up announced...and it's a doozy!

3 December 2009 2:08 PM, PST | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

In addition to the competition titles which were announced yesterday, Sundance has announced the remainder of their line-up and it includes some titles we’re already familiar with along with a huge number of premieres.

Also on the docket are two new series: Next which showcases low/no budget films and Spotlight which highlights films which festival programmers deem worthy of extra love including Enter the Void (review) and Lourdes (the trailer for which I really liked).

I’m particularly excited to see some of the titles in the New Frontier program but overall, the line-up is an impressive one but the Kristen Stewart fan in me is excited to see her turn as Joan Jett in The Runaways and I think it’s fair to say we’re all dying to see Vincenzo Natali’s hotly anticipated Splice (trailer).

I hope I don't go out therer and freeze my tail off just to see...I don't know, a documentary about a former Pakistani prime minister or something silly like that. Here's the lineup so far: Premieres To showcase the diversity to contemporary independent cinema, the Sundance Film Festival Premieres section offers the latest work from American and international directors as well as world premieres of highly anticipated films. Queen Elizabeth branded ''vermin''

A Labour candidate who called Britain's Queen Elizabeth "vermin" has been sacked. Peter White, a would-be local councillor for Havering Borough Council has been axed, after he was forced to apologise for an online rant about Britain's Queen Elizabeth. Peter had described the queen as a "parasite" in a post on the social networking site, Facebook. The comments were posted on the Facebook page of Tory MP Andrew Rosindell, who is campaigning for the royal milestone to be marked with a public holiday. Peter wrote: "What is the point of celebrating the diamond jubilee of someone who is born into a position of privilege; she is a parasite and milks this country for everything she can. Noble actors crowned for The King's Speech

16 November 2009 7:43 AM, PST | Corona's Coming Attractions | See recent Corona's Coming Attractions news »

It's kind of a slow news day for movies when the big story (so far) is about a new movie concerning Queen Elizabeth II's father. The King's Speech is the title of the project which has just begun filming in England and it stars Colin Firth as King George VI, the monarch who ruled Brittania directly before present day Elizabeth's reign. George inherited the crown after his brother Edward abdicated to marry the American divorcée Wallis Simpson in 1937.

George was unprepared for the public role that was thrust upon him. He had a speech impediment and to overcome this social liability he undertook lessons from speech therapist Lionel Logue (played by Geoffrey Rush.) When the Second World War broke out between England and Germany, King George VI's speeches delivered to the British people via radio served as inspiration and morale boosters.

Colin Firth joined by Helena Bonham Carter, Michael Gambon, Timothy Spall and Derek Jacobi in biopic about reluctant wartime monarch George VI

A roll call of British acting talent has been added to the cast list of The King's Speech, a drama about George VI's struggles to overcome his stammer. Already on board were Colin Firth as the reluctant monarch, who was pushed on to the throne after the 1936 abdication crisis, and Geoffrey Rush as Lionel Logue, the unorthodox Australian speech therapist who helped him.

As the second son of George V, the shy prince universally known as Bertie was the spare to the heir and seemed destined to lead a quiet life. But when his brother David, who was crowned as Edward VIII, chose to abdicate to marry Wallis Simpson, Bertie was thrust into the spotlight. However, with the help of Logue, he not only overcame his speech impediment, »
