Halloween Video Vault: Ghostwatch

It is seventeen years since the only terrestrial airing and it still has the power to convince and terrify. It can be set alongside Nigel Kneale’s Stone Tape and Barry HinesThreads as a singular event, a controversial landmark of Television broadcasting that was deemed so effective that it was banned from being shown again.

In the internet age, where iPlayer, iTunes and torrents mean that most tv programmes are readily available and easy to acquire, yet Ghostwatch wasn’t available, via a repeat or video release, for ten long years. The Enigma of Horror Vérité

24 October 2009 10:06 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

The notion of a film using a vérité style and false claims of “it really happened” is nothing new to the horror genre.  In 1974, Tobe Hooper’s masterpiece The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, made use of a now famous John Larroquette narration, a group of amateur actors and a gritty shooting style to make mid-70s drive-in movie-goers question the reality of what they had just seen.  1980 brought horror fans the still controversial Cannibal Holocaust, a film that not only invented the now popular “found footage” horror film, but still even today manages to make some of its viewers question if what they are watching is in actuality, “snuff”.

The trend continued into the 1990s with films like the morbidly comical Man Bites Dog (1992), the widely overlooked and heavily flawed The Last Broadcast (1998) and of course the hugely profitable and arguably overrated The Blair Witch Project (1999); a film whose success, though »

The Coffin Joe Collection (DVD Review)

21 August 2009 9:07 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

That the image of Coffin Joe – with his black beard, hat and cape; single, undulating eyebrow; and curling, claw-like fingernails – does not cause crackles of recognition and revulsion in cinemagoers everywhere in the world is something between a shame and a travesty. His off-screen alter ego, José Mojica Marins, is a trailblazer of Brazilian popular culture and a pitiless master of extreme cinema but, in some countries, his work has gone all but unseen. Now, for the first time, his Coffin Joe classics have been released in Great Britain – and they are a terrifying test for anyone who feels they can withstand whatever a horror film can inflict.

Aside from the expected mutilations, murders, massacres and dismemberments, these films feature: blasphemy, rape, necrophilia and drug abuse; eye surgery, suicide and Satanism; sadomasochistic sex, cannibalism (of the dead and still living) and a scene in which a man is spoon fed molten metal. »

Issues Of Sustainability

I’m returning to Rotterdam after a 10-year absence. The last time I was here we were screening my first feature The Last Broadcast. Last night I enjoyed a dinner with Nekisha Cooper (Pariah) and Ben Howe (Treeless Mountain) two up and coming producers who are attending the Rotterdam Lab. I was struck by the fact that the conversations from a decade ago were still so relevant today. »
