A very nice movie based on the novel by Radu Tudoran
cris_rover22 August 2005
Although the movie follows to a certain point the book by Radu Tudoran it's the approach chosen by the director Mircea Muresan and the exceptional performance by the cast members that makes this movie worth seeing. The action follows the ship "Speranta" (Hope) in it's journey half way around the world, with incredible adventures of her crew-members struggling to get through to their destination... On their journey they have to face the unleashed power of nature, fierce-some pirates, deadly enemies, and many other obstacles you can't even imagine. It's a movie about the struggle that lies in every one of us to succeed were others have failed, to go where no man had gone before, one of the best action movies I've ever seen before...

the best film ever made of a romanian director
iceman18038815 September 2006
TOATE PANZELE SUS is one of my all-time favorites films. IlarioN CIOBANU is fantastic in the lead role. ion besoIU is at his finest as captain of speranta ship. Very memorable, unforgettable performances, shocking action scenes and twists. I cannot write enough good things about this film. After years of looking, I recently found this film on DVD and added it to my collection. This is the kind of movie that you can watch again and again and continue to see things you've never noticed before. This film never gets old and you never grow tired of watching Toate panzele sus!. Also Ilarion cibanu , known for his role in Toate panzele sus! as, plays a young, doomed inmate. There are other character actors included in the cast that you will more than likely recognize throughout the film. I give this film the strongest and highest of recommendations

Very good family show
cristian-butcovan1 April 2020
I've seen it when I was a kid and rewatched it now with my son. It's very good, full of advantures, learning also a bit of geography, history, etc. The only bad thing is that it has only 12 episodes.

mouth of air
Kirpianuscus29 November 2016
for its period, it was an event. and it remains today too special for many reasons. first - the extraordinary cast. the second - the adventures. not the last - exoticism. and the status of alternative to the official propaganda. a ship. and its men and woman. challenges. and the spirit of the team. memorable characters. and the meet between a great young novel and a great director. "Toate pînzele sus" is an oasis.support of memories and axis for feel, again, the air of free spirit. a kind of slice from Jules Verne novels. with a seductive specificity. because it has the great virtue to be out of time. same fresh in 2016 like in 1977. same hopeful, romantic and good occasion to rediscover talented actors and an admirable script.

Not as good as I remembered
tvautd3 February 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I saw this movie when I was a child and I love it. It was one of my favorites movies. Now, after years, I am very disappointed. I saw all the flaws, all the mistakes. The acting is really bad, especially in the first episodes. The movies tries to rely on the book, but its much more compress and much more less enjoyable. The ending, witch is different from the book is not bad, is absolutely awful. One of the worst endings I've seen, no substance, no logic, the ending in the book is much good. If you seen this movie in your childhood, I recommend not to see it again. If you didn't see it, I recommend you to avoid seeing. The book is really good, I recommend you read it instead of watching this.

seed of nostalgic remembers
Vincentiu8 June 2012
adventures, ideals, friendship, loyalty, dream of each teenager and crumbs from Jules Verne work. a movie - adaptation of Radu Tudoran novel, with extraordinary cast in skin of impressive characters. a surrogate of normality in Comunist Romania after the Cultural Revolution influence. fascinating in 1970 years, beautiful today, it is a kind of seed or taste of madlene for nostalgic remember of youth / childhood or just prey for comparison with present blockbusters. behind each definition, it is in same measure nice, thrilling, seductive, funny. once was way for imaginary travels. today - old object of a world for who freedom was emotions watching TV. Anton Lupan, Ismail or Pierre Vaillant are more than characters. and the music is , every time, essence of a delicate emotion and magnificent loisir.

A few words about the second installment ("The Mysteries of the Seas")
Cristi_Ciopron13 July 2006
Warning: Spoilers
An Armenian merchant promises that he'll reward the ship's captain with half of his wealth."-It's about what sort of a half",answers, cautious, "Gherasim"(=Ciobanu).(Later, they'll find out it was a nasty half:all the diamonds, topazes, rubies, sapphires Lupan has received from the Armenian prove to be fake:the merchant has cheated them, and Ciobanu's cautions were, after all,of no avail). "-We've passed into the Tyrrhenian, villainous sea,d... it!"("Gherasim") Or,when an apprentice sailor is amazed by the great number of Greek captains they seem to find in a meridional port,Lupan answers him:"All of the Greek sailors are captains!".

"Toate ..." is an interesting show,at least for its suspenseful and exotic adventure and for its cast (Besoiu,Ciobanu,Constantin,Rautu,Mrs. Szonyi,Florescu, etc.)(although Sollima's "Sandokan" is a much better TV show, with fewer good actors).

On the board of his ship,Lupan finds a letter,so he's able to track Vaillant, and the whole crew heads for Port Said. Then they reach the island Mussarah.A telegram from Saint Malo notifies Lupan that Pierre Vaillant has left for the South America.

The scene of the fight with the pirates, once "Speranta" has arrived in the Atlantic,is rather awkwardly done.

Ciobanu is mettlesome,gruff,punchy and plain.

Besoiu is charming,elegant,good-natured.

A special remark for J. Constantin, who does, here, his best role as an gossipy, pushing and joyful Turk. Later,Constantin's career as a showman and the junk he was forced to make got him into vulgar overacting and kitsch. But in "Toate ..." he is at his best and does an excellent "Ismail".

Mrs. Szonyi is ravishing,fresh,luminous,sweet-tempered.

Florescu,a largely underrated Romanian actor,is freakish and pert and groggy and quarrelsome.

G P Avram is rakish.

Radu Serban's score is OK.

Mrs. Vintila did the opening credits' design.

"Toate ..." is fun for a Scott/Dumas/RL Stevenson/Benoit-minded person.
