12 year-old Nonni and his 8 year-old brother Manni live with their mother Sigrid and their grandmother in a small community in Iceland in 1847. Their father Sven has been away at sea for the last eight years in South America, presumed dead. During her years alone, Sigrid has entertained the greedy town broker Magnus as her companion, but she hesitates on his offer of marriage as he is domineering and disliked by her sons, but mainly because the death of her husband was never confirmed. A handsome stranger named Harald arrives by boat to the village with Sven's personal belongings and brings bad news of Sven's death to the family. Sven's final wishes were for Harald to look after his family. Immediately, Sigrid and her sons take a liking to Harald for his good-natured personality and his good husbandry on the homestead. The boys find a father-figure in Harald that they never found in Magnus, leaving Magnus feeling jealous. Fearing he will lose Sigrid to him, he frames Harald for murder in order to remove him from their lives. The series is an adventure from start to finish as Harald, a natural survivalist, is on the run for a murder he didn't commit, but does what he can to save his own life from Magnus and his henchmen. The young brothers believe in Harald's innocence and do what they can to aid him, and convince their mother and the townspeople that it is actually Magnus responsible for the crime. Based on the children's book Nonni and Manni by Icelandic author Jon Sveinsson, it is loosely based on his own upbringing in Iceland in the mid 19th century.
