Mike Dougherty Explains How He Would've Written X-Men 3

5 hours ago | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

You're probably wondering why I'm writing about X-Men 3 some three years or so after it first came out. Well, despite making some $234 million a the box office, most comic book fans hated the movie, claiming it was a huge let down and that they butchered the Dark Phoenix storyline. Well, you may have also heard the name Mike Dougherty recently, and that's because he directed the cult horror hit Trick 'r Treat (buy the DVD). But before he directed that, he worked closely with Bryan Singer and is credited as one of the writers on X2. He even helped brainstorm an entire story for X-Men 3 with Singer that never got used. But what if? This was never supposed to be heard by anyone besides Bryan Singer, but Dougherty recently appeared on the /Filmcast After Dark and started talking about it after he was asked what he thought of ... »

Comic book writer/artist Al Davison on what was wrong with The Dark Knight, Superman Returns and Watchmen

13 November 2009 3:31 PM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

We're seeing more and more comic books and graphic novels being adapted for the big screen and, even with varied results at the box office, the trend shows no sign of stopping.

This is largely because established titles come with a devoted fanbase while newer publications are akin to film storyboards that give studios a clear visual idea of the project.

Only recently I have twice reported on a number of comics that are being picked up by film bosses, and you can see those round-ups here and here.

I talked about the craze to comic book writer and artist Al Davison, who runs The Astral Gypsy graphic novels shop and art studio in the Canal Basin here in Coventry.

Al's been writing and drawing comics for 25 years. He is working on the Doctor Who comic (as seen in the image pictured right), which was launched in July, and recently »

Thor Updates: Production Schedule

13 November 2009 4:51 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

After the major announcement two weeks ago of Sir Anthony Hopkins signing on to Thor as the title character’s father, Odin, we now have most of the principal characters cast, albeit with a few secrets yet to be revealed.

According to Production Weekly’s Twitter postings, the next Marvel Studios solo character film is nearing the start of principal photography and they’ve hammered down the shooting locations. Check out the details below.

Filming on Marvel’s “Thor” is scheduled to begin in La mid-January, then move to Santa Fe, New Mexico from March till late-April.

Not only is it great news that my most anticipated Marvel character film is well on its way, but this means that next summer we’ll likely get a Marvel panel presentation (and footage!) for Thor at San Diego Comic-Con. That’s something that I cannot miss, similar to this year’s awesome »

McKellan: 'I'm Too Old For X-men'

12 November 2009 8:06 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Sir Ian McKellan has disappointed X-men fans by insisting he won't appear in a spin-off sequel based on his character Magneto.

The veteran actor starred in three X-Men films as the magnetic villain and movie bosses are said to be planning a new movie to reveal the character's beginnings.

The project will follow in the footsteps of X-Men Origins: Wolverine which featured Hugh Jackman's X-Men alter-ego.

But McKellan, 70, is adamant a spin-off featuring Magneto will not involve him - he's too old to play such a demanding part.

He tells EmpireOnline, "There's meant to be a Magneto script floating around, but I've not read it, so I suspect it wouldn't involve me. I think it would be about the younger Magneto, and the most I could hope for would be to top and tail that. They can't have someone whose face is as lined as mine any longer!" »

Exclusive Interview: Ian McKellen (The Prisoner)

11 November 2009 11:56 PM, PST | TVStar | See recent TVStar news »

Everything is fair game for a remake these days, even something as iconic as The Prisoner (TV). At least with their re-imagining, AMC is going all out, delivering a lush six-episode series starring Jim Caviezel as Six -- the prisoner role played by Patrick McGoohan in the classic old show he created -- and Ian McKellen as Two, the enigmatic leader of The Village, from which newcomer Six seeks to escape. AMC will air the six episodes over three nights starting on Nov. 15. McKellen -- during a recent exclusive interview with PopStar -- told us that this new version of The Prisoner is most definitely not your grandpa's Prisoner. "The old one was about the preoccupations of the time and the idea of socialism, and it was Orwellian in a way," McKellen said. "I don't think there were any black faces in it. If you're going to tell that story »

Mad Men? Meet the X-Men

11 November 2009 6:30 PM, PST | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

Are you a fan of Mad Men? Are you a fan of X-Men? Have you been hoping that Matt Weiner and Stan Lee would somehow meet up at an exclusive Hollywood party and eventually create a series that combines your two favorite television franchises?

If so, please get out of your house more.

And that hasn't exactly happened but the funny folks at Madatoms have done that for you with their new line of Mad Men/X-Men mash-ups. The shows are actually eerily similar when you think about it. Both of them feature ruthless characters who will stop at nothing for ultimate power. Both deal with the changing intolerance of their respective ages. The only thing missing are the tight fitting spandex outfits, but hey, a man can dream, right?

Goyer Wants Magneto On The Back Burner

10 November 2009 3:56 PM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

I could write an essay on everything that was wrong with X-Men Origins: Wolverine. As a comic book film, it ranks somewhere between the never-meant-to-be-released Fantastic Four movie from 1994 and the straight-to-video Captain America movie from 1990. There was simply nothing there to enjoy. That opinion solidified, the entire time the Wolverine origin was being punted around, a Magneto back story was also in the works, but it now seems that it will be a few more years before we can facepalm while attending another X-Men related disaster. In an interview with MTV, writer David Goyer (who ranges from Batman Begins to Jumper) has backed recent statements by producer Lauren Shuler Donner, saying that Fox is a bit confused where to go with the franchise, and that the project should be placed on the back burner. Goyer also seemed to give the impression that he no longer cares much about the »

Who needs critics? Who needs experts? Since the dawn of the internet and the democratization of entertainment, who really needs someone to tell them what is good and what is not good? Clearly, the people who made up the list of nominees below -- the 18 million voters of the People's Choice Awards -- need some assistance. It is sad -- void of great drama such as Mad Men and full of teenie-bopper schlock like Twilight -- but also triumphant, as it makes me feel great about my own job security. Thank you America, for once again proving that you need me. The 2009 People's Choice Awards will air on January 6, 2010 on CBS. X-Men: The Last Stand: What Could Have Been

10 November 2009 1:45 PM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Brett Ratner is tired of defending his directorial work in X-Men: The Last Stand, but fans continue to wonder what might have been if Bryan Singer had finished his X-Men trilogy, instead of defecting to Superman Returns. Michael Dougherty, the screenwriter for X2: X-Men United who joined Singer's defection, explained his ideas for X3 to Slashfilm in a recent podcast (transcribed by TheGeekFiles).

You found out was that Phoenix [(Famke Janssen)] was going round the world taking things into her own hands and that she had basically returned as a god, which they did in X3. She had viewed herself as above the conflict, that she was here to end things on her terms, she was sick of the fighting and she was going to take things into her own hands and she did not give a s**t what the X-Men or the Brotherhood had to say about it.

X-Men Origins: Magneto Screenwriter Agrees with Producer: Not Anytime Soon

10 November 2009 1:16 PM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Last month, X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner proclaimed that X-Men Origins: Magneto is the furthest X-Men movie from production, possibly getting made in "five years." Today Magento screenwriter David Goyer told MTV that he agrees with Shuler Donner.

I tend to agree with her. [Fox is] still trying to figure out what they want to do, whether or not they'll do a different X-Men movie next or another Wolverine movie next. If they want to make Magneto, that's awesome. In the meantime, I'm just going to move on with my other projects. Even taking FlashForward aside, I'm booked up for another year and a half. I have no complaints.

Despite the movie's production woes, that hasn't stopped fans from creating a concept trailer that uses footage from all three X-Men movies. Check out what they've dreamed up.

Exclusive: David Goyer's 'Magneto' Origins Story Is A Ways Off

10 November 2009 12:30 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

From Splash Page: Recent comments from "X-Men" producer Lauren Shuler Donner have cast some doubt on the future prospects of "X-Men Origins: Magneto," the David Goyer-penned origin story focusing on the mutant menace's early years.

Donner said that while Goyer's script is "brilliant," the chances of the movie actually making it to theaters are dwindling. Certainly, it's on the lowest rung of an "X-Men" ladder that already consists of a "Wolverine" sequel, a "Deadpool" solo movie and "X-Men: First Class."

Speaking with MTV News, Goyer's thoughts regarding the "Magneto" adaptation surprisingly mirrored Donner's own—in other words, the "Batman Begins" scribe believes that "Magneto" should be on the back-burner.

Brett Ratner takes on The Wolfman, Avatar, Prince of Persia and more

10 November 2009 11:23 AM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Director Brett Ratner has had no involvement with Quentin Tarantino's recent war thriller Inglourious Basterds or with the upcoming films Avatar, The Wolfman or Prince of Persia, but somehow he has managed to get a cameo appearance in all of them, courtesy of some spoof posters on a new website.

Ratnerfilms depicts the filmmaker digitally added to publicity images of Joe Johnston's The Wolfman, James Cameron's Avatar, Mike Newell's Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time and Grant Heslov's comedy The Men Who Stare at Goats (or stare at Ratner in this case), as well as several other releases.

It's not the first time Ratner has popped up imitating other roles. X-Men fans will remember him donning mutton chops, fake metal claws and a leather suit to portray Wolverstein, his version of Jackman's Wolverine, in a spoof publicity shot for X-Men: The Last Stand.
