Happy birthday to 'Twilight' and 'New Moon' star Michael Welch

25 July 2009 9:14 AM, PDT | Twilight Examiner | See recent Twilight Examiner news »

Michael Welch, who plays Mike Newton in Twilight and The Twilight Saga: New Moon, has just turned twenty-two today. Welch, a rather impressive career actor, has definitely made a name for himself among the Twilight fan community. One of the biggest reasons for that, aside from his spot-on performance as Newton in the first film, is his geniality and openness with the fans. Welch has been a source of great new information, updates, and interviews for many months. Welch began his acting career in 1998, starting with television series such as Frasier, Veronica's Closet, Two Guys, A Girl And A Pizza Place, before tackling the role of Artim in Star Trek: Insurrection. Over the past decade, you might have seen him on shows such as Walker, Texas Ranger, 7th Heaven, Norm, The Pretender, The Drew Carey Show, Malcolm In The Middle, The X-Files, Touched By An Angel, Judging Amy, The District, »

Trekking With Tim, Day Nine: Star Trek: Insurrection

5 May 2009 10:04 AM, PDT | Rotten Tomatoes | See recent Rotten Tomatoes news »

One of my criteria for judging the Star Trek movies has been whether they feel cinematic or are essentially feature-length television episodes. Star Trek: Insurrection falls into the latter category: its special effects are so-so, its allegorical political agenda is obvious, and several of its action scenes are indifferently staged. And yet, I found myself giving in to Insurrection's modest charms. Perhaps it's my increased familiarity with the Next Generation crew, but they seem much more comfortable this time out. This is hardly classic Trek, but in its own unassuming way it works, and even manages to surprise in spots. »

SciFriday: The Separation Of Church And Space

3 April 2009 5:08 AM, PDT | AirlockAlpha.com | See recent Airlock Alpha news »

I know that there are only a handful of people on this planet who watched "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier," but I was one of them. I mean, what can I say? I was like 13 years old, and I was the kind of person who could be entertained by C-span. Hmmm, come to think of it, I haven't really changed a lot. Anyway, for those of you who avoided William Shatner's monstrosity of a film (which actually looks kinda good nowadays compared to "Star Trek: Insurrection" and "Spider-Man 2"), Spock's emotional brother hijacks the Enterprise and takes it to the center of the galaxy to find God. Well, he finds God, but it's not the God he was expecting. In fact, it's not really God at all, just some omnipotent snippy being who was trapped at the center of the galaxy, and needs a starship to get out. »
