Carl Rinsch Hired to Direct Universal's Black Lagoon Remake

We've written quite a bit about the Creature From the Black Lagoon remake in development over the last year or so. However, Hero Complex is now reporting that director Breck Eisner (who is finishing up his Crazies remake) has been replaced by Carl Rinsch, the commercials director who was originally thought to be directing the Alien prequel then got hired to take on 47 Ronin instead. It looks like once Rinsch is done with 47 Ronin sometime late next year, he'll get to work on this Creature From the Black Lagoon remake. The studio is supposedly going "back to the drawing board" this time and throwing out any old screenplays.
Breck Eisner had originally been set to direct a script written by Gary Ross (Big, Pleasantville, Seabiscuit). Ross is still producing, although it looks like they'll be finding a new screenwriter who will whip up a new draft before moving forward.

Raimi in Dark About 'Venom'

For me (and many others), Venom — the black-clad, toothy, evil version of Spider-Man — was one of the weaker elements in Spider-Man 3. But some contingent of the film-watching community must have liked the character, because a Venom movie has been rumored for weeks now.
But according to Sam Raimi, who has directed all the 'Spider-Man' films to-date, and is on-board for the next three installments, the potential spin-off would not necessarily be connected to his movie. That is, Venom going solo doesn‘t mean the character will be re-appearing in any 'Spider-Man' film he helms.
"It hasn't come up to me," Raimi told MTV News about his Spidey sharing universes with Venom. "I think that the studio is just letting me work with the writers and trying to make the best stories possible for this universe. I don't know if Venom is a separate universe or not.

Gary Ross Takes Matt Helm, Venom Can Wait

Last week we reported Gary Ross was in talks with Sony Pictures to write and direct the Spider-Man spin-off Venom. Now it seems the comic book movie will have to wait because Ross is close to directing Matt Helm for Paramount.
The movie would be based on a series of 27 novels by author Donald Hamilton about a counter-agent and similar in tone to the Bourne franchise. Steven Spielberg was once considered for the director’s chair, but may end up getting a producer’s credit on the film. (Spielberg has since moved to remake Harvey.)
According to The Playlist, George Clooney and Jon Hamm were considered for the title character, but eliminated for separate reasons. Bradley Cooper (The Hangover, The A-Team) is the front runner for the lead. That guy must have a phenomenal agent, he’s popping up in contention for everything. He’s not exactly the modern Dean Martin,

Gary Ross Delays Venom for Matt Helm with Bradley Cooper?

I have to admit, the notion of Gary Ross, the guy behind “Pleasantville” and “Seabiscuit” writing “Spider-Man 4″ was kinda a shock already, but the idea of him writing and directing a “Venom” spin-off movie was just … strange, though not unheard of; Marvel has, after all, given “Thor” to Shakespeare guy Kenneth Branagh, and that’s possibly the biggest Wtf moment of 2008. Now, word from The Playlist is that Venom will have to wait, because Gary Ross has just hopped onboard “Matt Helm” with an eye towards writing and directing it.
Originally, Steven Spielberg was anxious to direct “Matt Helm”, a personal favorite of his, but apparently a recent split between Spielberg’s Dreamworks and Paramount may have dampened the uber director’s affections for the Donald Hamilton series of spy novels. As a result, Spielberg has voluntarily left the project, leaving space open for Gary Ross to take over.

Gary Ross May Helm 'Matt Helm' Before 'Venom'

Last week, I made an off-hand comment that I'd like to see writer-director Gary Ross work more often. I mean, Pleasantville and Seabiscuit are the only films he's directed, even though he has a couple other projects down the road a piece. He's been linked to Venom, the Spider-Man spin-off he would tackle after writing the script for Spider-Man 4, and now he might take on another hot property.
The Playlist writes that Ross may take over the director's chair for Matt Helm, which was at the center of the messy Spielberg-DreamWorks-Paramount fallout earlier this year. Spielberg was supposed to direct it for Paramount, but the studio won't let him go near its new Bournesque franchise.
Matt Helm will be based on the Cold War spy novels by Donald Hamilton, updated to gravy train the way James Bond did. And Ross might be directing the suddenly hot Bradley Cooper, an

Last week it was widely reported that after providing a successful rewrite of the Spider-Man 4 script, Gary Ross had been approached by Columbia Pictures to rewrite the screenplay for the spin-off film, Venom, and to direct it himself. This was noteworthy for a variety of reasons, not least of which was the fact that Ross' writing-and-directing résumé, which includes Pleasantville and Seabiscuit, wouldn't suggest he was the guy for a comic-based summer blockbuster about an alien symbiote that turns people evil.
But now The Playlist says that, according to an unnamed but well-placed source, whatever Ross is doing with Venom will have to wait -- first he's going to direct a Matt Helm movie. The source says it's supposed to go into production next summer, which would push the shooting of Venom into 2011 at the earliest.

As we learned last week, filmmaker Gary Ross (Seabiscuit, Pleasantville) is reportedly working on writing and possibly directing Marvel's sticky villian (turned hero?) Venom in a solo adventure.
But does Ross already have a full dance card? According to the Playlist, before he bonds symbiote to host, he'll make a new machismo-filled mission for swinging spy Matt Helm.
An update of the property has been in the works for years, most recently caught in the Dreamworks/Paramount divorce. While

Last week we reported that writer-director Gary Ross (”Pleasantville”, “Seabiscuit”) was in talks with Columbia to direct their “Spider-Man” spinoff movie, “Venom” about the Spider-Man villain who has Spider-Man’s powers but he’s got claws and is muscular and slobbers a lot. I didn’t see much of a need for a Venom movie so I’m delighted to learn that Ross is pushing “Venom” aside to take on Donald Hamilton’s “Matt Helm” series about a swinging, pulpy super-spy. Hit the jump for more details.
The Playlist is reporting that an adaptation of “Matt Helm”, a project previously associated with Steven Spielberg before the director departed to do whatever else he wanted, is now in the hands of Gary Ross. This is slightly surprising since “Venom” would seem to be the bigger franchise and Ross is already writing the screenplay for “Spider-Man 4″. It’s also surprising because,

According to a report by Variety, Gary Ross (”Pleasantville”) is closing in on a deal to not only direct a “Venom” project, a spinoff of Sony’s “Spider-Man” franchise, but also possibly rewrite the current script.
Topher Grace, who portrayed the character of Eddie Brock/Venom in “Spider-Man 3″, will not be returning to the role of Venom, an enemy of Spider-Man bonded to an alien symbiote that gifts him with powers similar to Spider-Man.
First introduced in 1986 by Marvel Comics, Brock was a photographer similar to Peter Parker who falls out of grace thanks to Spider-Man. He was the first character to be known as Venom after bonding to the [...]

Filmmaker Gary Ross (Seabiscuit, Pleasantville) will write and potentially direct “Venom” spin-off, based on the villain from “Spider-Man 3.”
In the comic series, Venom is a parasite alien that bonds with Peter Parker and later his newsroom rival.
Back in 2006, Venom was introduced to the fans in “Spider-Man 3” as Topher Grace portrayed the evil Spider-Man look-alike, humanly known as Eddie Brock. Considered one of the greatest threats to humanity in the Spider-Man universe, the villain is a sentient alien with a liquid-like form which requires a human host to survive. By bonding itself to the host, it gives its host enhanced power to form a super-villain.
Avi Arad and Marvel are producing the movie. Ross will also take a part in producing. He is also scripting “Spider-Man 4” for Sony.

Well now ain’t this just out of left field. Filmmaker Gary Ross, writer/director on such inspirational dramas as “Pleasantville” and “Seabiscuit”, was recently tapped to take a swing at the “Spider-Man 4″ script, which got a lot of heads turning. And now the heads are gonna keep turning, because according to THR, Ross has been given the job of adapting “Venom”, a spin-off movie based on the Spider-Man franchise. That’s not all, too: Ross is scripting the movie with an eye toward directing it himself, his first movie since 2003’s “Seabiscuit”.
“Venom” will be based on the black alien symbiote from outer space featured in the third “Spider-Man” movie. You know, the gooey black stuff that landed on Earth thanks to a meteorite, then slithered around before finally landing on poor Topher Grace and turning him into a huge black Spider-Man wannabe with giant teeth? That’s Venom.

Gary Ross ("Seabiscuit," "Pleasantville") who is already rewritting "Spider-Man 4" for Columbia Pictures, is now making a deal to write and direct "Venom," a spinoff of series.
Marvel Entertainment's Avi Arad will produce with Ross. The story tells of Venom, an archenemy of Spider-Man who will be transformed into an antihero who defends the innocent.
In "Spider-Man 3," Venom was played by Topher Grace who started out as Eddie Brock, a competitive photographer and Peter Parker's rival. After he's infected with the black, alien organism which grafts itself to his sckin, Brock develops superpowers and strength far greater than Spider-Man's.

An accomplished screenwriter and director, Gary Ross had been already hired by Columbia Pictures to do a rewrite on Spider-Man 4. Now comes the scoop that the Seabiscuit and Pleasantville helmer is writing a new script for Venom, the studio's proposed spinoff movie about the symbiote villain seen in the third Spider-Man movie.
Ross may also direct the movie, too.
There's been earlier drafts done for this Venom movie, and at one time New Line Cinema had the rights and were fooling around with it. Of course, the big problem with a spinoff movie for a supervillain is that who gets to be the bad guy in the bad guy movie? And there's also the question as to how interesting a character Venom is without his adversary, Spider-Man, to be seen. Would you pay to see a movie that featured The Joker and no Batman? Ok, bad example but Mr.

Seeing as Spider-Man 4 is perpetually in development and/or just! about! to shoot!, now seems as good a time as any to give the film's resident script doctor Gary Ross something else to do. Sony has reportedly tossed the franchise's long-rumored Venom spin-off Ross's way, entrusting the Pleasantville and Seabiscuit director with his own mega-budget tentpole while the studio likely regroups without Raimi. And one minor change: Don't look for Topher Grace to reprise his role.

Columbia Pictures is in talks with Gary Ross to direct and rewrite the script for Venom, a spin-off of Spider-Man 3 focused on the dark, webslinging doppelganger.
Ross is the third and most recent screenwriter working on the Spider-Man 4 script for Columbia, director Sam Raimi, and stars Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst. Things must be going well with that relationship if they’re considering him for their slow-moving spin-off.
If the BFDealMemo report is true, Ross would also be the third writing deal for Venom, after going through drafts by Jacob Estes (Mean Creek), followed by Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese (Zombieland). The studio has been considering it since at least February 2008 when word of a Venom-based movie leaked online.
As for his director credentials, Ross helmed the pleasant Pleasantville and Oscar-nominated Seabiscuit, so he’s not just some writer making his way behind the camera.

Looks like Columbia Pictures is still interested in moving forward with a Venom spin-off movie, as Variety reports that Gary Ross (Seabiscuit, Pleasantville) is in talks to rewrite and direct the movie. Ross, for those not aware, was the one the studio hired to re-write the latest draft of Spider-Man 4, due to begin production early next year with Sam Raimi, Tobey Maguire and Kristen Dunst all back for another (their last?) go-round.
Apparently the studio was so happy with the work Ross did on Spidey that they're now interested in having the guy rewrite and direct Venom, which we assume will follow the trials and tribulations of that black gooey alien entity that, when applied to a human's skin, turns them into either a vicious and violent monster or a fan of all things emo (or both!). The fact that Ross will be working on both Spidey 4 and Venom

Hmm...now this is interesting. As a fan of Gary Ross, I'd like to see the writer-director of Dave, Pleasantville, and Seabiscuit work a little more frequently. He's currently working on Tokyo Suckerpunch and the script for Spider-Man 4, and Variety says he might be the latest big name director to helm a Marvel Comics movie.
The rumor is that he's going to direct Venom, as well as polish the script turned in by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the guys riding highest on the success of Zombieland. As great as that screenplay was, Gary Ross brings a little more experience with character development, although you could obviously claim that his style is between 90 and 180 degrees away from where Venom should optimally be.
We don't know much else other than Topher Grace shouldn't be waiting for a call - no surprise - and that Sony wants to start over from scratch with the character.
