There is not a more divisive filmmaker working today than M. Night Shyamalan. Everyone can basically agree that his 1999 breakthrough "The Sixth Sense" is a supernatural classic, but after that? Slip on the brass knuckles and get ready to rumble. Shyamalan's early 2000s hits "Unbreakable" and "Signs," along with his 2017 comeback "Split," generate the least amount of friction, but aside from those three, it's so very on. You'll hear reasonable defenses for just about all of his films (save for the singularly atrocious "The Last Airbender"). While it's hard to sway folks on a movie as wackadoodle as "The Happening," it is only a good thing to have a major filmmaker knocking out provocative original movies for major studios.
Shyamalan's latest provocation, "Trap," will be his first project under his first-look deal with Warner Bros., and as is typically the case with a new Shyamalan movie, we know next to nothing about it.

Though the actress is known for her beloved character Chessy in 1998’s The Parent Trap, she said in an interview with People magazine, “Just because you’re in a movie doesn’t mean you’re rich.
“I wasn’t a star. I was the woman that made you cry in The Parent Trap, and you’re still looking for a job the next week,” Walter explained. “So honestly, feeling safe? The season four pickup of Abbott.”
The actress shared that her role as teacher Melissa Schemmenti in the hit ABC sitcom allowed her to afford to take her four children on their first major family vacation — a trip to Italy last summer.

Always a bridesmaid, never a bride — unless, of course, your best friend gets engaged to the love of your life, you make a spontaneous wish for true love, and then magically wake up as the bride-to-be. That’s the pickle in which Lindsay Lohan finds herself in the upcoming romantic comedy Irish Wish.
Directed by Janeen Damian (Falling for Christmas), produced by Brad Krevoy and Michael Damian, and written by Kirsten Hansen, Irish Wish follows shy book editor Maddie Kelly (Lohan) on a supernatural, romantic journey of self-discovery. “She’s been ghostwriting for the writer she works for and she’s hopelessly in love with him, and she’s expecting him to love her back,” Lohan tells Tudum. But when reciprocation proves elusive, she takes matters into her own hands — only to find that romantic fantasies don’t always hold up to the harsh light of reality.

"I read this script and thought, 'This is the best script I've read in God knows how long.'" That's what director Mark Waters told Entertainment Weekly in 2014 about his reaction to reading Tina Fey's script for "Mean Girls." At the time, it was called "Homeschooled" but the title didn't matter. What mattered was what was on the page. That's what director Mark Waters told Entertainment Weekly in 2014 about his reaction to reading Tina Fey's script for "Mean Girls." At the time, it was called "Homeschooled" but the title didn't matter. What mattered was what was on the page. Those words on those pages would inspire one of the most successful movies about the high school experience ever made.

2023 may have been a complicated year for the film industry, but it was a great year for movies. So, hey: No pressure, 2024.
As we sit here in the January doldrums, we can only look at the months and ahead and hope. Will those massively anticipated sequels live up to the hype? Will the latest releases from bona fide masters be worth the wait? Will everything that is supposed to come out this year actually come out this year? The anticipation is killing us.
This is far from a comprehensive list of every intriguing movie hitting theaters in 2024, but it does represent the titles that have the /Film team's attention already. Naturally, we expect dozens of incredible surprises to emerge from out of nowhere, especially as the film festival season starts to kick off. And since we're not psychics, we had to stick to the movies that we know are coming out this year,...

If there’s one takeaway from the LGBTQ narrative films that came into the world and across our screens this year, it’s the sheer variety of the stories there are to tell.
From real-world historical biopics and inspirational sports dramas, to tender love stories and raunchy comedies, there really was something for everyone this year. Captivating characters, fearless performances and narrative tapestries that defy convention and troublesome tropes all reigned supreme. As such, here are some of the best we got.

A new movie from the director of “Weekend” starring the Hot Priest from “Fleabag” and everyone’s favorite internet boyfriend should be enough to catch the interest of anyone listening — and “All of Us Strangers” lives up to that potential and then some. This equal parts sexy and emotionally devastating romance stars Andrew Scott as an isolated writer who,...

Fans of Judy Blume’s “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret.” had to wait more than 50 years to see the classic children’s novel transferred to the big screen, but their patience was finally rewarded this spring. Written and directed by Kelly Fremon Craig (“The Edge of Seventeen”) and featuring such A-listers as Rachel McAdams and Kathy Bates, the faithful film adaptation boasts an awe-inspiring Rotten Tomatoes critics score of 99% and was even described by its source’s author in a “Today” interview as “better than the book.” As the 2024 movie awards season begins, its best shot at a Golden Globe nomination lies with its 15-year-old star, Abby Ryder Fortson, who would be the fifth youngest contender in the history of her category.
At this point, Fortson is hovering directly outside of Gold Derby’s predicted six-person Best Comedy/Musical Actress lineup with the support of just over a quarter of our oddsmakers.

"The goal for me, always, is try to make a movie that feels timeless, that people will watch years from now," said "Mrs. Doubtfire" director Chris Columbus in a recent interview with Ktvu.
The character of Mrs. Doubtfire actually has her roots in a real person -- not a recently-divorced father pulling a desperate gambit to see more of his kids, but the owner of a second hand clothing shop in Edinburgh. The shop was called Madame Doubtfire and, colloquially, so was its owner, though her name after remarrying was Annabella Coutts. She was something of a local legend, with one Edinburgh resident recalling that she had "about half a dozen cats" and that while her shop was an excellent resource for high-quality second hand goods,...

Miles Morales, Gwen Stacy, and Peter B. Parker returned in this summer's "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse." The movie is a stunning thrill ride, but when it reaches its conclusion, viewers realize that it doesn't wrap up everything in a nice bow. Instead, it leaves you with a bunch of cliffhangers.
If you keep watching through the end credits, you'll learn that the story will continue in "Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse," but you might be left with some big questions - particularly, how long you'll have to wait for the next chapter! Here's what we know so far.

Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp were permitted to conduct this interview amid the actors' strike through A24's interim agreement with SAG-AFTRA.
"Dicks: The Musical" is kind of like "The Parent Trap" - in that it follows two identical twins who are separated at birth and reunite later - and it's unlike "The Parent Trap" in that it has lots of jokes about sex and being gay and incest and the sewer boys (we'll come back to them). It stars Josh Sharp and Aaron Jackson, who first wrote the story as a two-person comedy show titled "F*cking Identical Twins."
"It's a classic story at this point," Sharp jokes to Popsugar, referring to why they decided to do a "Parent Trap" twist. "There's 'The Iliad,' there's 'The Parent Trap,' 'Macbeth.'"

A wacky film based on a stage show by comedians Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp, Dicks: The Musical – a riff on The Parent Trap with two adult men as the starring twins — opens in seven theaters in NY, LA and San Francisco on a crowded specialty weekend as theatrical releases of fall film festival titles accelerates.
Dicks, from A24, developed by Chernin Entertainment, is, according to press notes, a first “adult musical comedy” for both. (It’s Chernin’s second musical after hit The Greatest Showman.) Directed by Larry Charles, it stars the two creators Jackson and Sharp as self-obsessed businessmen who discover they’re long-lost identical twins and come together to plot the reunion of their eccentric divorced parents. They’re joined by an A-list roster of Nathan Lane, Megan Mullally, Bowen Yang and Megan Thee Stallion.

There’s been a shocking amount of horror movies released in August and September. Now that it’s October, it’s going to seem far more appropriate, with the month starting off with a doozie. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
Way back in 1973, William Peter Blatty‘s 1971 novel, “The Exorcist,” was adapted into a movie by the late William Friedkin, becoming a huge theatrical phenomenon that is still thought of as one of the scariest horror movies ever made. It introduced many Americans to the idea of possession and exorcism, making household names of Linda Blair and Ellen Burstyn, both who received Oscar nominations. The movie received 10 bids total, winning for Blatty’s screenplay and the sound.
Fifty years later and filmmaker David Gordon Green has followed his mostly successful “Halloween” sequel trilogy with “The Exorcist: Believer,” the first of three movies in the works. The...

This article contains The Wheel of Time spoilers.
Actress Hayley Mills may have upended her parents’ lives in Disney’s The Parent Trap back in 1961, but her cameo in The Wheel of Time similarly showed how one Aes Sedai appearing in a flashback could influence the course of history for several of the show’s major characters. What at first glance appears to be a Dragon Reborn prophecy of which viewers were already aware becomes, upon closer inspection, a turning point not only for Rand as the subject of the vision, but also for Siuan, Moiraine, and the entire Damodred family.
Mills portrays an Aes Sedai of the Blue Ajah named Gitara Moroso, who was Keeper twenty years ago when Siuan and Moiraine were still among the Accepted in the White Tower. In The Wheel of Time, they are shown as a happy, carefree couple, who are particularly glad to...

The first time director Larry Charles was invited to the Toronto International Film Festival, he brought along a little something called Borat, which, despite enduring an extended projector breakdown 20 minutes into its premiere screening, emerged as a word-of-mouth sensation. Now, some 17 years later, Charles has returned to the festival’s Midnight Madness section with Dicks: The Musical, which not only screened without a technical hitch, but emerges as a certified wave-maker in its own right.

Editor’s note: This review was originally published at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival. A24 releases the film in theaters on Friday, October 6.
There are two kinds of people in this world: Those who might want to see a ridiculously irreverent musical riff on “The Parent Trap” in which the estranged identical twins aren’t cute tweenage children but rather grown-ass men who sing about sacks of cum and clearly want to have sex with each other… and those who might not. “As far as I was concerned, it was like, ‘I’m just doing this dumb show with my friends,’” remembers composer Karl Saintt Lucy of Fucking Identical Twins, the one-act off-Broadway musical that ran in 2015. Over a half decade later that, that “dumb show” is now one of the more anticipated openings at TIFF. Retitled Dicks: The Musical, the A24 movie is an R-rated dirtbag version of The Parent Trap where two megalomaniacs (Josh Sharp and Aaron Jackson) discover they are twins and try to get their parents — played by Nathan Lane and Megan Mullally — back together.

What are the odds that two openly gay cut-ups doing a raunchy half-hour musical comedy routine in a Gristedes grocery store would somehow convince “Borat” director Larry Charles to turn their show, “Fucking Identical Twins,” into a feature-length A24 movie? You’d stand a better chance playing the lottery than predicting the path “Dicks: The Musical” took to reach the big screen — which is exactly why this twisted cross between “The Parent Trap” and “Kids in the Hall: Brain Candy” seems destined for cult status.
The absurdist brainchild of Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp, “Dicks” is an unapologetically puerile, hard-r novelty that’s just lo-fi enough to maintain its underground cred. If any other distributor were backing it, “Dicks” might shrivel into home-video obscurity. A raucous, deliriously madcap midnight premiere of “Dicks: The Musical” closed out the first day of the Toronto Film Festival. A24’s first-ever song-and-dance movie, which leans hard into its R-rating and puts an irreverent, queer spin on “The Parent Trap,” played to laughs, cheers, audible gasps and shrieks and, yes, a few groans from the Royal Alexandra Theatre. Jamie Lee Curtis "saved" 'Freaky Friday' because of her "chemistry" with Lindsay Lohan. The 64-year-old actress was drafted into the 2003 Disney comedy to play a mother who switches bodies with her teenage daughter just days before filming began and now director Mark Waters has recalled how the two stars were "not scared" to approach the movie with an "aggressive energy."He told The Hollywood Reporter: "[Curtis’ casting] ended up, I think, saving the movie because her energy and also her chemistry with Lindsay … the two of them have a lot of like aggressive energy, and aggression is funny. If you’re kind of playing comedy in a way that’s shy and non-confrontational, it’s never that good. But the two of them were not scared to get into it with each other, and that made it really work well."The comedy - which was a remake of the...

Disney’s 2003 version of Freaky Friday almost looked very different.
Annette Bening and Michelle Trachtenberg were first cast as mother and daughter in the remake of the 1977 film that saw Barbara Harris and Jodie Foster switching bodies on Friday the 13th. But Trachtenberg couldn’t get out of her commitment to shoot Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Bening dropped out shortly before production began.
Producer Andrew Gunn recalls that Nina Jacobson, then president of Buena Vista Motion Pictures Group, happened to see Jamie Lee Curtis in True Lies on TV and suggested her for the updated role of the therapist mom Tess, who gets trapped in the body of her teenage daughter Anna, an aspiring musician, after they each open a magical fortune cookie.
And while Lindsay Lohan’s audition for the part of Anna hadn’t been stellar, she had already proved herself in Disney’s 1998 remake of The Parent Trap.

The premise of Nancy Meyers' 2006 romance "The Holiday" is rather high concept. Iris (Kate Winslet), a reporter in England, has just broken up with her cheating boyfriend. Amanda (Cameron Diaz), a Los Angeles native and showbiz impresario, has just done the same. By chance, the two heartbroken women discover a want-ad in the newspaper wherein they would swap homes for the holidays and live in each other's respective towns. Amanda, while in England, finds some unexpected romantic company with Iris' visiting brother Graham (Jude Law). The two decide to have a fling, but end up seeing each other more and more. Iris, meanwhile, settling in L.A., finds herself drifting closer and closer toward a friend of her ex, a charming and funny dude named Miles (Jack Black). The film also features Rufus Sewell, Shannyn Sossamon, Kathryn Hahn, and John Krasinski. Lindsay Lohan makes a cameo.

You've seen A24 films about somewhat literal man-eating aliens ("Under the Skin"), people being turned into walruses ("Tusk"), farting corpses ("Swiss Army Man"), talking shells ("Marcel the Shell with Shoes On"), and the multiverse ("Everything Everywhere All at Once"). Now, the studio is trying its hand at a musical for the first time with "Dicks: The Musical," a film that, contrary to my expectations the first time I saw that title, is not about singing penises. I mean, A24 only just made a film featuring a giant penis monster, so it wasn't out of the question.
Backing up -- "Dicks: The Musical" comes from relative newcomers Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp, who both wrote the film -- which is based on their original two-person stage musical "F***ing Identical Twins" -- and star as a pair of obnoxious business bros who find out they're literal twins and conspire to get their divorced parents back together.

A24 has unveiled the official trailer for its first-ever movie musical Dicks, which arrives in theaters September 29th.
Written by and starring comedy duo Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp, Dicks is a play on The Parent Trap, in which two rival businessmen (Jackson and Sharp) discover they’re long-lost twins and decide to trick their eccentric divorced parents (Nathan Lane and Megan Mullally) into getting back together.
Naturally, the twins get into some trouble along the way, including some very stylish reprimanding from their bar-spitting “lady boss” Megan Thee Stallion and a visit from a divinely-dressed Bowen Yang. See the trailer for Dicks: The Musical below.
Megan Thee Stallion will next headline One Musicfest this October at Atlanta’s Piedmont Park, and tickets are now on sale here.

Fresh off being announced as TIFF’s opening night Midnight Madness movie comes the premiere of the trailer for Dicks: The Musical. Being billed as A24’s first movie musical, the movie stars Aaron Jackson & Josh Sharp, along with Nathan Lane, Megan Mullally, Megan Thee Stallion and SNL’s Bowen Yang as God himself. Originally titled F*cking Identical Twins, the film seems to be a subversive, very R-rated twist on The Parent Trap.
Here’s the official synopsis:
Two self-obsessed businessmen (writers Aaron Jackson & Josh Sharp) discover they’re long-lost identical twins and come together to plot the reunion of their eccentric divorced parents in this riotously funny and depraved musical from comedy icon Larry Charles also starring Megan Thee Stallion, Nathan Lane, Megan Mullally, and Bowen Yang as God.
Jackson and Sharp also wrote Dicks: The Musical, which is directed by Larry Charles, director of Borat, Seinfeld, Curb Your Enthusiasm and much more.

Can twins successfully bring their parents back together? That sounds like the plot of “The Parent Trap,” but the similarities between that film and “Dicks: The Musical” (previously known as “F*cking Identical Twins“) end there. The new A24 film updates that old formula to instead present two adult businessmen with a similar secret. And with legendary director Larry Charles at the helm, expect this film to be full of laughs.
