Kevin Williamson to Script Remake of The Bedroom Window Between Screams 4 and 5

12 November 2009 11:28 AM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

We're in the current of a raging river of Kevin Williamson at the moment, with Scream 4 news popping up almost every day and his new TV series The Vampire Diaries - which I've yet to see any of, being in the UK - proving to be a fairly strong performer. It's just like 1998 all over again when Scream 2 was giving way to hype for Scream 3 and Dawson's Creek was clogging up the pages of TV Guide. I'm pretty happy about this comeback myself. I like Williamson and I definitely love Scream. As well as revving up his own horror franchise for another spin around the block, Williamson has another gig in his datebook. Between completing the Scream 4 script and embarking on the pages for the fifth, he's set to write and direct a remake of Curtis Hanson's The Bedroom Window. Actually, as the film was »

Exclusive photos, director comments: Savage County on-line shocker

10 November 2009 12:11 PM, PST | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Director David Harris sent along some exclusive pics (see them below) from his fright feature Savage County, an MTV production which will be presented in eight 10-minute on-line installments beginning next February. Lensed in Memphis, Tn this past summer, the movie (scripted by Harris and Dan Alvarado) is about a group of high-schoolers who run afoul of a vicious backwoods family, the Hardells.

Savage County is an unabashed homage to vintage rural horrors of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre breed, though Harris notes it has a true-life inspiration as well. “I grew up in Texas,” he tells Fango, “and as a kid, I was 100 percent sure that Chainsaw 1 and 2 were documentaries. We had a big woods near our neighborhood, with a 1800s house and a rambling old man with a shotgun and 100 cats—basically, a slightly less decrepit ‘Grandpa.’ That was the original big scare for me, and there was no »

‘Scream 4′ Goes 3D, Wes Craven Almost Signed On to Direct

23 October 2009 9:47 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Scream 4 is coming and it might be coming in 3D! According to /Film, there is a rumor out there that the latest installment in the popular slasher franchise will be filmed in stereovision. It wouldn’t be the first time that a horror movie has used 3D to enhance its fright factor. One recent example is the abysmal My Bloody Valentine. Ugh. Honestly, if the story sucks, I don’t care if a giant, digitally projected knife is coming at my face. It’s just not scary.

On that note, I’m really hoping Scream 4 brings the franchise back to its roots. When it came out, Scream was critically praised for its clever mix of humor, satire, and genuinely frightening horror. For my money, there hasn’t been a slasher film as good since. Even Scream 2 was pretty awesome, though I don’t want to get into »

Wes Craven to ‘Scream’ Again?

19 October 2009 5:29 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

You should know that in Scream 2 during a scene where Sarah Michelle Gellar's character Cici gets thrown off a balcony, there's a completely visible head of a stunt coordinator that you can see if you pause or slow down the DVD. Fellow Reject Brian Salisbury taught me that, and it's a lesson I've never forgotten. Keep it close to your heart and in your mind as you read the news/rumor that Craven is definitely/maybe on board to direct Scream 4. According to a "very reliable source" close to Cinema Blend, the iconic horror director who has lived to see his early films begin to get remade is going to take his place back in the director's chair for another installment in the horror franchise that lampooned and reinvigorated the genre. Do I believe it? Probably. It's not that far-fetched to begin with. We know the ball is rolling on the project, and »

Showgirls the Sequel?!

5 October 2009 3:25 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Remember the following phone exchange in Scream 2 between Randy (played by Jamie Kennedy) and the psychotic killer?

Killer: What's your favorite scary movie?

Randy: Showgirls. Absolutely frightening.

Well amazingly, JoBlo.com writes that German site Extratipp is circulating a rumor that the Paul Verhoeven flesh-fest — notorious for its asinine plot and atrocious acting — might be getting the sequel treatment.

Unfortunately (or fortunately ... we can't decide), this alleged project has nothing to do with Verhoeven. Some unknown named Marc Vorlander is supposedly developing the sequel, which is titled Showgirls: Story of Hope. The title references the name of one of the original movie's minor characters, who was played by Rena Riffel.

Normally, if you see a character's name in the title of a movie, you expect that character to last. But no, apparently Hope kicks the bucket very early. JoBlo threw the content of the German post into a »

The Crazies Trailer and Poster Go Zombie ... Crazy

2 October 2009 7:52 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

This is a busy year for George Romero. Only two years removed from his last zombie epic, Diary of the Dead, Romero has been making the rounds at film festivals with his latest zombie flick, Survival of the Dead. However, there's another Romero movie out there as well, a remake of Romero's 1973 movie The Crazies, though Romero is only serving as Executive Producer. Breck Eisner (Sahara) is directing this Crazies from a script by Ray Wright (Pulse) and, no stranger to remakes, Scott Kosar (The Amityville Horror and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre).

While the remake is similar in plot to the original — townspeople slowly go insane after a contaminant is released in the city's water supply — both the new poster and the trailer of the remake look ironically more in keeping with the zombie genre than the Romero original, which focused more on the military's inability to control the situation »

The Crazies New Trailer and Poster

1 October 2009 12:53 PM, PDT | HugAZombie | See recent HugAZombie news »

With Survival of the Dead making the rounds at all the film festivals it's easy to forget there's another George Romero movie out there, The Crazies, even if Romero only serving as Executive Producer on the remake of his 1973 zombie-esque film. Breck Eisner (Sahara -- wait, Sahara?! Really?!) is directing this time around from a script by Ray Wright (Pulse) and Scott Kosar (who should be comfortable with remakes after writing both 2005's The Amityville Horror and 2003's The Texas Chainsaw Massacre).

While the remake is similar in plot to the original -- townspeople slowly go insane after a contaminant is released in the city's water supply -- both the new poster and the trailer of the remake look ironically more in keeping with the zombie genre than the Romero original. This could be for the better, Romero's original does tend to drag in places, especially in all the military planning scenes. »

Bored-to-death Neve Campbell returns to horror with ‘Scream 4′

26 September 2009 7:28 PM, PDT | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

Neve Campbell will be joining her Scream costars, David Arquette and Courteney Cox, on Scream 4.

Rumors were spreading earlier this year that Campbell, who starred as Sidney Prescott, the main sucker from Scream, Scream 2, When Will I Be Loved and Scream 3, will return to the role that made her a smidgen more famous than when she was just on Party of Five.

Her schedule has freed up since the cancellation of her NBC summer show, The Philanthropist.

Earlier this summer, screenwriter Kevin Williamson suggested that Campbell had said “F*cketh no” for a fourth go on Scream and posted the following on his Twitter page:

Trying to figure out a Sid-less scenario. She won’t do it. This sucks. #overdonemovies

Wes Craven is reportedly in talks to helm the project but is awaiting Williamson’s script.

The next film, which is looked on to be a full-reboot of the series, »

Greatest Scream Queens

1 September 2009 12:00 PM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Debbie Rochon, often described as a scream queen herself, wrote in an article originally published in Gc Magazine that "a true Scream Queen isn't The Perfect Woman. She's sexy, seductive, but most importantly 'attainable' to the average guy. Or so it would seem." Nastassja Kinski Films: To the Devil a Daughter (1976) [1] Cat People (1982) [2] The Day the World Ended (2001) [3] Inland Empire (2006) [4] Kinski will always be remembered for the iconic photograph shot by Richard Avedon (with a snake coiled around her body) and her role in Paul Schrader's (not so good) remake of Cat People. Needless to say, it was a hit at the box office and Kinski deservingly received a Saturn Award for Best Actress. Caroline Munro Films: The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971) [5] Dr. Phibes Rises Again (1972) [6] Dracula A.D. 1972 [7] Maniac (1980) [8] Faceless (1987) [9] Demons 6 (1989) [10] Caroline Munro seduced audiences in her Hammer roles in films like Dracula A.D. 1972, but for gore hounds, »

Gale Weathers is Married With a Kid

10 August 2009 2:37 PM, PDT | HorrorYearbook | See recent HorrorYearbook news »

Courteney Cox revealed a little information about Scream 4 and her character Gale Weathers during the recent TCA summer press tour. In Scream 4, which takes place 10 years after Scream 3, Weathers is married to Dewey and has a kid. SciFiWire.com reports: Scream 3 ended with Deputy Dewey (David Arquette, Cox's real-life husband) proposing to local newswoman-turned-true-crime guru Gale. The characters bonded during their investigation of the first Scream murders, through the campus crimes of Scream 2 and the film-within-the-film of Scream 3. Writer Kevin Williamson previously described Scream 4 as the beginning of a new trilogy. Cox has no trepidations about beginning another three films. 'No, because [I take things] one day at a time,' she said. 'But I heard the idea for Scream 4, and it's fantastic.' We will keep you updated. »

Courteney Cox-Arquette Dishes on Scream 4

Did Kevin Williamson Kill Off Neve Campbell For 'Scream 4'?

3 August 2009 2:45 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Scream” creator Kevin Williamson has had a long time to think about how he might work Sidney Prescott—the doe-eyed gal always running from knife-wielding killers in freaky white masks—into the story of another of his horror movie send-ups. His “Scream 2” came out in 1997 and he didn’t work on “Scream 3.” But as he started writing “Scream 4,” he found out a troubling bit of news: Neve Campbell, who played Sid in all three flicks, wanted no part of a fourth installment.

"I ain't got no Sid-less scenario," he told the New York Post’s PopWrap in June. "I don't know yet what to do."

It’s possible that Williamson has now found his answer. As he let slip to MTV News at Comic-Con while nonchalantly discussing the film’s plot, he might have killed off Sid!

“It’s gonna sort of involve our returning characters—the only characters left alive, »

Welcome to the weekly Newsroom Poll, where we will give you a sneak peek into the lives and minds of some of the correspondents, writers, editors and producers here at MTVNews.com. Every week, they'll answer a poll question that will reveal some of what we talk about behind the scenes here in the newsroom. Enjoy!

This week, details surfaced about one of the most hotly anticipated albums of the fall. No, not Jay-z's The Blueprint 3 or Lil Wayne's Rebirth. We're talking about the soundtrack to "New Moon," which will likely feature contributions from Radiohead's Thom Yorke, Muse, Kings of Leon and Death Cab for Cutie. There was also the announcement of the soundtrack to "Jennifer's Body," the new Diablo Cody-penned horror film. With that, combined with the quarter-century anniversary of one of the finest film soundtracks ever constructed (that being Prince's Purple Rain), this week's question is: »

David Arquette Confirms Role in Scream 4 with Courtney Cox

15 July 2009 8:44 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

In an interview with Marc Malkin of E! Online, David Arquette confirmed that he and his wife Courtney Cox have signed on for a fourth installment of the Scream franchise.

We are going to be doing Scream 4. Kevin Williamson is writing the script at this moment, and hopefully Wes Craven is going to direct ... Kevin has sort of put out the broad strokes, but I don't think I'm at liberty to share any of that.

The franchise began in 1996 with Scream. Neve Campbell starred as Sidney, a suburban teenager hunted by a serial killer who takes cues from horror movies. Arquette played Dewey, a hapless local cop who falls in love with Cox's character, the opportunistic reporter Gale Weathers.

Two sequels followed over the next four years. Craven directed all three installments, while Williamson wrote the scripts for Scream and Scream 2 before deciding not to return for the third movie. »

Fool Me Twice, Shame on Bruno

10 July 2009 8:57 AM, PDT | Vanity Fair | See recent Vanity Fair news »

At one point in Scream 2, a character lays out the rules for a successful horror sequel: “The body count must always be bigger,” and “the death scenes are much more elaborate, with more blood and gore.” The same imperative to top oneself applies to comedy sequels, too. Except that in the case of Brüno, Sacha Baron Cohen’s follow-up to his 2006 stunt-farce, Borat, “blood and gore” should be replaced with “cock and balls.” (Horror and comedy are structurally identical, the only difference being the type of instinctual response they’re designed to elicit from a crowd. It’s no accident comedians speak of “killing” or “slaying” an audience.) The challenge was particularly tough for Baron Cohen, whose raw comic material—gullible people—gets scarcer as he gets more famous. He’s expected to do more with less. When he first conquered America with Da Ali G Show, he was »

Neve Campbell Won't Return to 'Scream' Franchise

Shortly after the news hit, it was reported that Williamson was trying to get Courteney Cox-Arquette, David Arquette and Neve Campbell to reprise their roles in some capacity for the new film, and while it looks like he might get the Arquette couple to come back (if Courteney Cox can somehow work it in around her TV schedule), it's not looking good for Sidney Prescott herself, Neve Campbell, who was the main focus of the entire original trilogy. Williamson first doled out the bad news via his Twitter page, saying "Trying to figure out a Sid-less scenario. She won't do it....

Arquettes in talks for more ‘Scream’

3 June 2009 12:55 PM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

Gasp

Earlier this year, Bloody Disgusting reported that Scream 4 may be headed to a theater near you. Though not quite in the way you’d expect.

With Scream and Scream 2 writer Kevin Williamson attached to the project, there are rumors of Wes Craven returning as well. Planned as a new trilogy, the next Scream series will focus on younger stars.

David Arquette and Mrs. David Arquette (Courtney Cox) are currently in talks for cameos, but don’t expect the Scream franchise to focus too much on the past. It sounds like they’re headed for a Halloween H20-esque faux-franchise holder. New kids + key original characters = profitable yet underwhelming performance.

The timing for another round of Scream couldn’t be better. As the torture-porn scene fades into obscurity, more movies from the slasher sub-genre are starting to appear in the muck with a large segment of them being rehashs of older stories. »
