[Exclusive Interview] Norman Reedus on The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day

2 November 2009 5:00 AM, PST | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

After all these years the Boondock Saints sequel is finally coming out. After years of rumors and all the die-hard fan’s heartaches, it’s now actually making it’s way to the big screen. In light of this, here’s what one of the film’s stars Norman Reedus had to say about the original, the sequel and what can be expected.

How was Comic Con?

Norman Reedus: Comic Con was nuts! I mean when we got on stage there was a lot of screaming people and the line for our panel was like a mile long.

Did you know before how die-hard some fans are? There are some insane ones.

Norman Reedus: Yeah, I have had experiences with people coming up to me with tattoos on their arms and some crazy stuff. I knew that we were in for quite a ride.

Yeah, those fans are »

First Clip and Buzz for Guillermo Del Toro-Produced Creature Feature Splice

5 October 2009 3:21 PM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

I first saw photos from Splice in February of this year and was immediately ready to see it. Cube director Vincenzo Natali has brought Sarah Polley and Adrien Brody into a world of genetic creature development that seems to have a lot of potential. The initial stills (some of which come from the clip below) showed a weird little creature that becomes something much larger and more dangerous. See the clip and read a bit of buzz from the Sitges Fest '09 after the break. The basic plot rundown is below, and you can read that or skip if you wish to remain less potentially spoiled. (There's nothing truly spoilery in either my words here or that synopsis, but if you just want to get a taste, skip right to the clip, which doesn't give too much away.) It's easy to see how this could combine elements of Alien, Species and Mimic, »

Mimic: Director's Cut and Cronos DVD Updates

29 September 2009 | shocktillyoudrop.com | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

Considering filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro's notoriety amongst genre fans, it's surprising that his earliest works haven't gotten the special edition treatment sooner. Thankfully Criterion seems to agree. The director stopped by the Del Toro Films message board to give fans an update on the eagerly anticipated Cronos Criterion DVD: " Cronos is evolving nicely," says Del Toro. "We are including a Never-seen-before version of Geometria (1987) the short that I made for 1 thousand bucks and that I was never able to finish the way I wanted it. Now I re-finished it for this disc (don't worry, no CGI or fancy stuff) and I like it- I never did before- but now I do." " Cronos has never looked so beautiful," continues Del Toro. "And we »

Mimic and Cronos Special Editions Update. No, Really.

29 September 2009 12:53 AM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Remember that cruel April Fool's Day joke from last April? You know, the one about a director's cut of Mimic coming to DVD? Bingo. I'll never forget the confusion shown by Andrew Kasch when it seemed to be a prank, as he said he watched as people worked on it. Relax Andrew ... your sanity is saved. It's coming all right, along with Cronos, courtesy of Criterion.

Guillermo del Toro himself stopped by the Del Toro Films message board to deliver this update for anxious fans:

"Cronos is evolving nicely. We are including a Never-seen-before version of Geometria (1987) the short that I made for 1 thousand bucks and that I was never able to finish the way I wanted it. Now I re-finsihed it for this disc (dont worry, no CGI or fancy stuff) and I like it- I never did before- but now I do.

Guillermo Del Toro Updates on Mimic and Geometria Director’s Cuts

28 September 2009 3:53 PM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

I've always rather liked the theatrical cut of Guillermo del Toro's Mimic, though admittedly somewhat less than his better (read: less compromised) pictures. It doesn't show any signs of being forcefully expanded from a short, some of the character and plotting work is brilliant and the atmosphere is often very powerful and pervasive. All the same, Del Toro knows the film that we don't, the unmade one, and he was there every step of the way as the battles behind the scenes were being waged. As such, when he says he's "Very Happy!!" with the in-progress Director's Cut, I can't help but be Absolutely Over The Moon!! too. The film is being restructured for an eventual release on DVD - and presumably also Blu-Ray. Del Toro stopped by the message boards at the Del Toro Films fansite to give an update, both on the Mimic disc and the upcoming »

Working With the Masters of Horror: Norman Reedus

28 September 2009 | shocktillyoudrop.com | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

Norman Reedus made his feature film debut with Mimic . Not a bad way to start - working with Guillermo Del Toro, arguably one of the finest creative forces in film today. The actor would be called back by Del Toro years later for Blade II , this time as Scud, the Daywalker's new tech assistant (after the brief demise of Kris Kristofferson's "Whistler"). Del Toro isn't the only director to use Reedus twice. Christian Alvart called him up when production on Pandorum (open in theaters now) was about to begin. The pair had previously collaborated on the serial killer thriller Antibodies . And, of course, there's Troy Duffy, who made Reedus one of the Boondock Saints . A sequel - subtitled "All Saints Day" - is getting limited release later next month. »

Guillermo del Toro and Disney Double Dare You

13 September 2009 8:11 AM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Plenty of good things coming from D23, the Disney Expo. The latest news concerns Hobbit bound director Guillermo del Toro teaming up with Disney to create a new animation label named Double Dare You.

Given del Toro's impressive previous films he seems to perfect fit for Disney, who after his incredibly dark and intricate early works such as Cronos and Mimic, turned his hand to the Hellboy comics; weaving the two strands of fantasy and horror to great effect.

Pan's Labyrinth, his 2006 gothic fairy tale, harked back to the chilling horror of The Devil' Backbone, throwing a child into a world of war, darkness and emotional and physical conflict. His artistic vision will fit this new Disney label perfectly as del Toro understands the key fact that in order to make a children's film work you have to avoid patronising the young audience and make it about them - their view of the world, »

Disney Teams Up With Guillermo Del Toro - is this how Dr. Strange will appear?

11 September 2009 4:08 PM, PDT | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

Put the pieces together: Guillermo Del Toro was talking with Neil Gaiman about doing a Dr. Strange film as far back as February 2008. Now Del Toro is cutting a deal with Disney... and Disney now owns Marvel, which of course is the home of the good Doctor. Sounds like the stars are aligning... but we already had a recent animated Doctor Strange...

Dreaming Big About Guillermo Del Toro's 'Big D' Announcement

11 September 2009 10:00 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

In the pantheon of bearded, nerd-loving filmmakers, Guillermo del Toro is still a lesser lord. A Duke to Prince Peter Jackson and King (or is it Emperor?) George Lucas, if you will. His power has been on the rise these past ten years, as his mainstream Hollywood history shows. From monster-movie-by-numbers fare like “Mimic” to the fantasia of bad-assery that is “Hellboy II,” del Toro is on track to be one of the greats.

While “The Hobbit” seems primed to be del Toro’s crown jewel, I’m personally more psyched about this “D”-related announcement he is teasing. “The Hobbit” will be good but the potential for greatness here is limitless. Here are five possible projects that could put del Toro over the top.

“District 10”

TriStar and Sony have already said they want to turn Neill Blomkamp’s sci-fi parable into a franchise. Obviously, Blomkamp and writer Terri Thatchell »

Nicolas Cage To Star In 3D Action Revenge Movie Drive Angry

31 August 2009 4:00 AM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Nicolas Cage has caught the 3D fever and has signed on to star in a revenge action film titled Drive Angry , to be directed by the helmer of My Bloody Valentine 3D. Patrick Lussier will direct based on a screenplay he co-wrote with his Bloody Valentine writing partner Todd Farmer for Nu Image/Millenium Films. The story is definitely R-Rated, an enraged man who is out for revenge, chasing the people who killed his daughter and kidnapped her baby. According to THR, "the vendetta/rescue spins out of control as the chase gets bloodier by the mile, leaving bodies strewn along the highway." The film will go into production in April in Shreveport, Louisiana, where Nu Image has a brand new $10 million studio. Lussier got his start in Hollywood as an editor on Wes Craven horror films like New Nightmare (Nightmare on Elm Street 7), the Scream trilogy, Mimic, and Halloween »

Warner Archive: 'Don't Be Afraid of the Dark'

31 August 2009 2:58 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

From out of the blue Warner Bros. sent over three titles from their recently launched Warner Archive collection, a program the studio began back in March of 2009 allowing consumers to purchase and/or watch on demand several previously unreleased movies on DVD for the first time. I have not heard anything recently on the program's successes, but I know when it first launched it was a huge hit and the studio was actually surprised by the demand. Considering I have a limited knowledge when it comes to unreleased titles my excitement wasn't all that severe outside of an interest in purchasing Francis Ford Coppola's 1968 debut The Rain People (how about sending that one over Warner?). However, when films arrive unexpectedly I can't help but get look their way as my curiosity in the lesser seen films continues to rise in hopes of finding hidden gems outside the realms of the classics. »

Guy Pearce Admits Being ‘Afraid Of The Dark’

30 June 2009 10:18 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Guy Pearce has joined Katie Holmes in the upcoming remake of Don't Be Afraid of the Dark.  The movie starts production next month in Australia per The Hollywood Reporter, and is being produced by Guillermo del Toro who also co-wrote the script along with Matthew Robbins (Dragonslayer, Mimic). The original film involved a young couple who move into their dream house but soon discover it's actually a nightmare abode!  Or something.  Kim Darby, who played the wife, discovers strange, little creatures living in the basement, but when she tries to tell people about them everyone thinks she's just having women troubles.  Everyone, including her husband, doubts her claims and she's left to deal with the demonic little bastards on her own.  It doesn't end well... and it's actually pretty goddamn creepy for a TV movie. Per THR, the remake is shaking up the story a bit by adding a child into the mix.  Bailee Madison »

Guy Pearce Isn’t ‘Afraid Of The Dark’

30 June 2009 8:58 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

A remake of the 1973 horror film Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark has been in the early development stages for awhile now, but today we get fresh news that Guy Pearce is in “final negotiations” to star alongside Bailee Madison (Bridge to Tarabithia) and the already cast Katie Holmes in the Miramax remake.

The original made-for-tv Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark became a cult hit: It tells the story of a young girl who is sent to stay with her father and his girlfriend only to find out the house is inhabited by demonic creatures. Pearce is in negotiations to play the father and author who is frustrated with his daughter telling tales of the creatures, with Madison set to play his daughter. Holmes will play Pearce’s girlfriend who starts to believe the daughter about the creatures, but fails in convincing the father.

Paramount gets Hellified with supernatural script

26 June 2009 9:12 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

According to The Hollywood Reporter,  Paramount has acquired the supernatural action screenplay Hellified in a six-figure deal. Andy Burg wrote the script, and the movie is set to be produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura, whose horror credits include Constantine, Doom, 1408 and the upcoming Dogs from Martyrs writer/director Pascal Laugier.

Details of Hellified’s story aren’t being revealed at the moment, but it reportedly concerns, no surprise, a trip to the hot place. Set to direct the movie is Dan Bradley (pictured), who has handled 2nd-unit and stunt coordination duties on Freddy’S Dead: The Final Nightmare, The Lawnmower Man, The Prophecy, Mimic, the second and third From Dusk Till Dawn flicks and big-ticket pics like the Bourne and Spider-man sequels, and is currently helming the Red Dawn remake for MGM. Guillermo Del Toro Pal Doug Jones Clarifies On ‘The Hobbit’ And ‘Frankenstein’

22 June 2009 1:00 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

A couple weeks ago, I posted about Guillermo del Toro making some comments on two of his upcoming projects, “The Hobbit” and “Frankenstein.” Specifically, he commented on the participation of one Doug Jones, a frequent del Toro collaborator. He was the body of Abe Sapien in both “Hellboy” flicks (to David Hyde Pierce’s voice), Pan in “Pan’s Labyrinth” and a mutant cockroach-thing in “Mimic.”

In the older interview, del Toro revealed that Jones will play some unrevealed part in “The Hobbit,” prequel to Peter Jackson’s “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, and the title role of the monster in the director’s down-the-road adaptation of “Frankenstein.” Sci Fi Wire cornered Jones this past weekend, when he appeared at the Wizard’s World Philadelphia convention. The actor was happy to clarify some of del Toro’s revelations from his own perspective.

On “The Hobbit,” Jones said that he »
