Box Office Weekend Ahead – Can Hannah Montana stop Fast and Furious?

10 April 2009 | Movie Jungle | See recent Movie Jungle news »

Disney unspools its next teen-drawing venture in “Hannah Montana: The Movie” into 3,115 venues, certainly pulling in tons of fans of the eagerly followed series. The question? Do they have what it takes to down “Fast and Furious” in its sophomore weekend at play? “Furious” has turned in the biggest gross of the year so far with $70.9 million grossed and a total of over $85 million pocketed thus far. “Montana” is helmed by Peter Chelsom, known for crowd-pleasing films like “The Mighty,” “Serendipity” and “Shall We Dance.” Two other wide openers will be vying for a slice of the weekend’s earnings but should pose no threat to the first two films. The first is the mall cop comedy “Observe and Report” which finds 2,727 locations and stars the ever-popular Seth Rogen as well as Michael Peña and Anna Faris. Jody Hill of “The Foot Fist Way” directs and writers the screenplay. We »

Six Studio Journeymen We Wish Would Return to Their Indie Roots

9 April 2009 4:39 AM, PDT | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

There was a reason to feel queasy after watching the trailer for "The Hannah Montana Movie," and it wasn't just the sight of Miley Cyrus fighting off Tyra Banks for a pair of garish high heels. No, it was seeing the end credits that read "Directed by Peter Chelsom." That name may not mean much to most, but for those who discovered Chelsom during the mid-'90s by way of his trilogy of Blackpool-set showbiz dramedies -- the short "Treacle," 1992's "Hear My Song" and his best, the 1995 Jerry Lewis-Oliver Platt father-son vaudeville comedy "Funny Bones" -- an adaptation of a Disney Channel show is nothing short of a crushing disappointment.

Now, times are tough and filmmakers have to eat. And perhaps such disappointment comes as a result of investing too much in the auteur theory, but there is a class of filmmakers whose careers haven't gone the »

"Hannah Montana: The Movie" - Exclusive first look added.

6 March 2009 | Movie Jungle | See recent Movie Jungle news »

Check out an exclusive first look at "Hanna Montana: The Movie" called "New Movie, New Sound" directed by Peter Chelsom. Now Chelsom has been impressive in three of his last efforts at the helm. I "The Mighty" starring Sharon Stone was nominated for two Golden Globe awards back in 1999, I thought "Serendipity" with John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale was a romantic treat and finally "Shall We Dance" offered a lovely combination of comedy, dance and romance.   Sure, "Hannah Montana" will certainly bring in a big wad for distributor Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, but it is a step down dramatically for Chelsom. It will be interesting to see how this one turns out in terms of critics' ratings.   Check out the trailer and "New Movie, New Sound" exclusive clip here from "Hannah Montana: The Movie"   Visit the official site »

According to the folks over at HitFix, Kieran Culkin has been cast as Wallace Wells Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, the upcoming graphic novel adaptation being directed by Edgar Wright (Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead). Culkin joins Micahel Cera and Mary Elizabeth Winstead. Based on Bryan Lee O'Malley's popular series of Scott Pilgrim graphic novels, the movie finds the title character (Cera) having to defeat his girlfriend's seven evil ex-boyfriends in order to win her heart. In the books, Wells is Pilgrim's gay roommate (they share a bed even though Pilgrim is heterosexual). Unlike Pilgrim though, Wells is considered the more responsible of the duo and also know for his pithy observations. Culkin’s credits include Father of the Bride, The Mighty, She's All That, Music of the Heart, The Cider House Rules. In 2002 he earned a Golden Globe nomination for his role in Igby Goes Down.
