'Beverly Hills Cop' is 25 Years Old Today... Can You Believe It?

5 December 2009 2:38 AM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Reading up on the history of Beverly Hills Cop, it never should have worked. By the time the movie went into production, there were about 8 billion different versions of the script. The final product was basically scotch-taped together from those different versions and whatever else didn't work was improvised by the cast.

Way back when, the story looked like a star vehicle for Al Pacino or James Caan in what would have been a much more serious take on the story. Then Mickey Rourke was attached. Then Rourke walked. Sylvestor Stallone came on board for an even bloodier version that never came to fruition because it would have been too expensive (reportedly Stallone took many of that version's ideas and made Cobra. I'm assuming it was most of the really bad ideas). So what did the studio do with what was once a serious tale of revenge? They made it a comedy. »

Brad Pitt may explore the Bermuda Triangle with 'Dark Void'

19 November 2009 12:49 PM, PST | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Brad Pitt has rarely dipped his toe into the world of Science-Fiction.  Sure, he appeared in Terry Gilliam's "Twelve Monkeys," but that's about it.  Instead he's had fun in period epics like "Troy" or the occasional drama with fantastical elements like "Meet Joe Black" and "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button."  Now, Pitt may be teasing his fans by developing a big screen version of the upcoming Capcom video game "Dark Void."  Will he actually star in it? According to Variety, the video game centers on a pilot on a routine mission who crash lands in the Bermuda Triangle.  When »

Surrogates

25 September 2009 5:41 AM, PDT | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

Surrogates

Directed by: Jonathan Mostow

Cast: Bruce Willis, Radha Mitchell, Rosamund Pike, Ving Rhames

Running Time: 1 hr. 28 mins

Rating: PG-13

Release Date: September 25, 2009

Plot: In a not-too-distant future, planet earth is virtually run by robots standing in for human beings. Though everything seems to be going smoothly, a (very) rare homicide throws the cybernetic utopia for a (very) unexpected loop. Answers are sought, but this time its the human instinct that’s called upon to find them.

Who’s It For? Fans of Minority Report, and those who feels Bruce Willis is the player they’d most want with the ball and the game on the line… er… actor most suited to save the world.

Expectations: This film didn’t look like an Oscar winner in its trailer, so I wasn’t expecting a revolutionary tale regarding the oft-recycled premise of man v. machine. Still, there was some hope that »

Brad Pitt's best-reviewed movies: What, no 'Meet Joe Black'?

21 August 2009 2:13 PM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Rotten Tomatoes runs down Brad Pitt's top 10 best-reviewed movies using their special Tomatometer. The results will give dedicated fans a lot to chew on, but one question I'd like to throw out there for discussion: Why is it that some of Pitt's best-reviewed movies aren't the ones he's starred in? The Tomatometer ranks 1993's True Romance as No. 1, an odd winner in my mind, not because True Romance isn't a great movie — it most certainly is — but because Pitt is barely in it at all. Yes, he's got a sweet little cameo as honeybear-toking stoner Floyd, but the movie is chock full of splashy cameos. Among the other films on the list where Pitt is a strong, albeit supporting, player: Thelma and Louise, Ocean's ElevenTwelve Monkeys, and Burn After Reading. Even his masterpiece performance in A River Runs Through It (No.6  on the list) is arguably a supporting role. »

Forlani In Dispute With Art Dealer

21 August 2009 5:10 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

British actress Claire Forlani is facing a legal battle with an art dealer who alleges the star ruined his credibility.

The unnamed specialist alleges the Meet Joe Black actress destroyed his "fragile and intangible" reputation by making false claims about his business practices in a mass email to friends.

In his defamation lawsuit, the dealer has accused the Brit of writing an "almost 500-word poison-pen note" in which she allegedly claimed he sold her counterfeited works, passing them off as pieces by famed artists Keith Haring and William Claxton.

She was also said to have accused him of overcharging her for works by pop artist Andy Warhol.

He insists he is innocent of the claims, but has been so wronged that "only a very large damages judgment can begin to remedy" his bruised reputation, according to legal documents obtained by TMZ.com.

A lawyer for Forlani says, "This lawsuit is absurd and totally without merit. We are very confident that the court will throw out the suit." »

Weekend Report: Humans Welcome 'District 9'

17 August 2009 12:44 PM, PDT | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

Many humans ventured into District 9 over the weekend, propelling the alien spectacle to an excellent $37.4 million start, while another science fiction-themed picture, The Time Traveler's Wife, had a solid debut. Though the weekend's other new movies disappointed, overall business was up 14 percent from the same weekend last year, when Tropic Thunder opened in first. Launching on approximately 4,000 screens at 3,049 sites, District 9's estimated opening attendance was slightly less than Cloverfield and slightly more than Starship Troopers among past comparable movies. The picture was sold not only as a sci-fi action horror with striking visuals but also as a dramatic mystery, taking a different approach than recent, more disaster-oriented alien invasion movies with a plotline concerning a segregated alien race. One way the marketing helped the picture stand out was through posters done up as signs from the world of the movie, marking bus stops and other areas as »

'District 9' And A 'New Moon' Trailer Highlight This Week's Box Office Poll

10 August 2009 11:00 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

See what I did up there? With the "New Moon" trailer? All due respect to "Bandslam," the release this week which will exclusively feature the latest trailer from the next adaptation in the "Twilight" series, but we've got a little bit of a "Meet Joe Black" situation going on here. For those who don't remember: "Meet Joe Black" hit theaters in 1998 along with the very first trailer for "Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace." People went nuts over it, with many freely admitting that they bought their ticket just for the trailer.

Granted, this is the second "New Moon" trailer. And according to all reports, "Bandslam" is a far better movie than "Meet Joe Black" was. But Twilighters rival "Star Wars" fans with their fervor. Before we dive in with the rest of the week's releases, why not take one more peek at that first "New Moon" trailer? »

Top 10 Movie Car Wrecks

28 July 2009 6:17 PM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

The right car crash can make or break a movie. For this list, I’ve included any type of wreck, whether it is two cars hitting each other or a car hitting a person on foot. As some type of parameter, I tried to exclude any wrecks derived from a lengthy chase scene (The Matrix Reloaded and The Blues Brothers). However, since chase scenes do yield some pretty ridiculous car wrecks, I wasn’t able to keep them off the list completely. I won’t go without stating the obvious: chase scene or not, I just wanted an excuse to watch clips of cars hitting things.)

*Sidebar* I apologize for the wrecks without links to the clips. If you can find a clip posted somewhere on the World Wide Web, let me know! (NickO@atomicpopcorn.net)

Maksim Abandons Idea of a Castle Wedding

5 July 2009 8:00 AM, PDT | PEOPLE.com | See recent PEOPLE.com news »

Dancing With the Stars' Karina Smirnoff and Maksim Chmerkovskiy are only engaged, but they've discovered what makes a happy marriage. "It's all about compromise," Chmerkovskiy, 29, says. "When we agree on stuff, that's the best part of [wedding] planning." A key part of this has been setting reasonable expectations. While initially thinking he wanted the wedding in a castle - the one used in the 1998 movie Meet Joe Black - Chmerkovskiy now says the idea has gone by the wayside. "We're probably going to do something in Manhattan, I don't know what," he told People Saturday before celebrating the Fourth of July »

Edgar Allen Poe’s The Fall of the House of Usher Goes 3D

18 May 2009 2:58 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Indie producer Green Knight Ventures will film a contemporary adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe's "The Fall of the House of Usher". The film will star Dougray Scott (Ever After), his real life wife Claire Forlani (Meet Joe Black) and Rufus Sewell (The Illusionist.) When I read that Poe's  "The Fall of the House of Usher" would be made into a film I was intrigued.  We're talking claustrophobic old house, possible live burial, haunting, insanity, and a family curse. Yes, it has it all. But then, alas, I read it will be a contemporary version set in Martha's Vineyard, titled The Ushers which unfortunately makes me think of old ladies dressed in black with white doily collars guiding theater goers to their seats at Broadway shows. The Ushers, brother and sister, Roderick and Madeline live in the family manse which is suffering from some serious physical decay. Think Grey Gardens without Big and Little Edie. An »

Poe's House Of Usher going 3D

18 May 2009 11:57 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Some news out of the Cannes Film Festival this afternoon, as The Hollywood Reporter says indie production company Green Knight Ventures will soon begin lensing an adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe's The Fall Of The House Of Usher... in 3D.

Claire Forlani (Mallrats, Meet Joe Black), Dougray Scott (Dark Water, Hitman) and Rufus Sewell (Vinyan, Dark City) will star in the film titled The Ushers. Stephen Kay (Boogeyman) is attached to direct.

THR says:

"Ushers" will look at a grown brother and sister who have lived in the same Martha's Vineyard house for a long time but begin to feel trapped there, and who then bring in a real-estate broker to help them resolve their crisis.

Look for more on this as it develops. »

The Red Robin Takes Flight

23 April 2009 7:56 AM, PDT | The Hollywood Interview | See recent The Hollywood Interview news »

By Alan Kline

Modern Primitives Films has announced the second feature film by writer-director Michael Z. Wechsler, entitled The Red Robin. Pitched as a blend of The Celebration and The Manchurian Candidate, the plot focuses on a family reunion which goes very awry when the youngest son accuses his ailing father, a famed psychiatrist, of using his own adopted children as guinea pigs for psychological experiments for the CIA.

The cast includes Jeremy Sisto ("Law and Order", Waitress, "Six Feet Under"), Claire Forlani (Meet Joe Black), Hill Harper ("CSI: N.Y.", Get on the Bus ), and Roger Guenveur Smith (American Gangster). Jonathan Sanger (The Producers, The Elephant Man) is on board as executive producer.

Wechsler has directed series for the BBC and Bravo and previously helmed the feature film Slaves of Hollywood, which also starred Harper. Slaves of Hollywood was a selection at 35 international film festivals and was awarded “Best »

Takeshi Kaneshiro Lost in Thought

27 March 2009 4:43 AM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Perhaps he's contemplating his beauty?

This could take all night.

In fact, he should probably lie down. Carrying around all that Beauty can be exhausting.

Speaking of Takeshi...

Whatever happened to that Emporio Armani campaign he was supposed to be in these past couple of months? It was a big deal that he was joining David Beckham as advertising's latest [insert celebratory trumpets] Underwear Man -- first Asian and all that.

But here's the pressing question that has me lost in thought. Why, despite his international profile, do none of his movies open in America? The last time he graced Us screens was five whole years ago when the international hit The House of Flying Daggers opened. Since then Takeshi has appeared in one strange Oscar submission from Hong Kong Perhaps Love (2005) and a crime drama Confessions of Pain (2006) with an even higher profile co-star Tony Leung Chiu-Wai. He followed that up with »
