This DVD looks ok, but we have definitely seen better ones in Universal's DTS series. The film master used is pretty clean. Color and contrast are good, but sharpness is somewhat lacking for a 16:9 enhanced transfer. Overview shots are too blurry and also close ups could be better. To compensate, it seems, edges have been digitally (over)enhanced which leads to distracting halos around contours. There is also quite some aliasing present, so this DVD does not get beyond the mediocre level concerning video artifacts. Close inspection also reveals 'tube face' in the telecine. The noise and grain level is mostly good, with the execption of some sky shots. Compression is ok, but artifacts are not difficult to find in most scenes.
Overall this DTS DVD is a bit disappointing, though it will probably look fine on smaller display systems, but can't hide its problems when used for wall size projection. Use of a better telecine and less indulgence of edge sharpening would definitely have helped.
