Watchable, interesting remake, 16 June 2001
Author: mkham6 from RI

The original "Day of" was a classic because the slow exposition of the Jackal's master craft made the audience finally start to empathize with him. In this one, as well, Willis adopts numerous disguises and personalities, but there's too much over the top American crap that would draw attention to a real professional.

Loved the scenery of Russia, despite some dubious scenes (they send a woman to arrest a top gangster and nobody has their gun out?). I was a reporter there, and trust me, the Mafiya is as bad as every story says- in fact the whole story of a Mafiya hit on an American official is not at all unlikely. Venora's dry, tough Russian cop is a masterful performance, Gere's credible as a reformed Irish terrorist (doing a decent accent), and it's nice to see Sidney Poitier again. Even Willis, a vastly underrated actor (see Sixth Sense again- nobody uses quiet better) is OK as the icy soulless killer- (picked up that blank look in the bars of NYC). But, yeah, they do have him doing some dumb things- the weapon, and the latop remote control is stupid and wildly implausible.

Still, if you liked the original, you'll probably like this. Score 5-6 out of 10..... - Mike Hammerschlag
