Horse Whisperer Author Still Awaiting Kidney Transplant

9 November 2009 4:16 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

The author of bestselling novel The Horse Whisperer is still waiting for a kidney transplant - a year after falling seriously ill by eating poisonous mushrooms.

Nicholas Evans and several members of his family were admitted to hospital in Scotland last September after they mistakenly ate a batch of toxic fungi while staying at a country estate.

The writer was told he needed a replacement kidney as a result of the illness - but he is still on the transplant list 12 months later and is forced to undergo 15 hours of kidney dialysis every week.

But he fears medical knowledge of poisonous fungi is limited following the retirement of leading expert Professor Roy Watling ten years ago.

Evans' brother-in-law Gordon-Cumming, who also fell ill from eating the mushrooms, says: "It is a worrying situation. (Watling's) knowledge is going to vanish and once he's gone, he's gone."

Evans, who has sold 15 million copies of the beloved book worldwide, sold the rights to his tale to Robert Redford, who starred in the big screen adaptation alongside a teenage Scarlett Johansson in 1998. »

Scarlett Johansson, a Potential Marilyn Monroe in 'My Week with Marilyn'

Scarlett Johansson may bring legendary actress Marilyn Monroe to life on the big screen. The actress who portrays Black Widow in "Iron Man 2" has been considered by director Simon Curtis to portray the late superstar for his upcoming biopic, "My Week with Marilyn", as reported by The Insider.

Among the potential actresses in Curtis' list, Johansson is said to be the filmmaker's first option to take on the leading female character. According to newspaper columnist Baz Bamigboye, her contenders for the role include "Bride Wars" leading lady Kate Hudson, "Doubt" star Amy Adams and "Shutter Island" actress Michelle Williams.

"My Week with Marilyn" is a drama biopic based on the diary of Laurence Olivier's employee, Colin Clark, who looked after the blond bombshell when she came to London in 1957 to film Olivier's "The Prince and the Showgirl". In the diary, Clark talked about showing Monroe around Queen Elizabeth's »

Johansson Frustrated Redford In Whisperer

31 July 2009 5:01 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Robert Redford struggled to work with Scarlett Johansson on the set of The Horse Whisperer - because she frustrated him so much.

The actress was 13 when director Redford cast her to star in the 1998 film, and although he acknowledges her acting talent he found it difficult working with her.

In upcoming book Robert Redford: The Biography, a crew member from the movie claims the Lost In Translation star would constantly interpret her scenes against Redford's own vision.

The book also alleges Johansson's mum influenced the young actress, causing her to constantly talk back to the director - leading to "friction" between the pair on set. »

"Easy Virtue" review. Jessica Biel takes her shot at respectability.

22 May 2009 | Movie Jungle | See recent Movie Jungle news »

Easy Virtue Reviewby Mike Digiorgio, Writer     3 ½ out of 5.               Jessica Biel takes her shot at respectability – not by actually going on stage and doing a play, but by doing a movie based on a classic play.  And she pulls it off.             It’s probably a back-handed compliment, but that’s the biggest surprise in Easy Virtue.  Biel’s never been a bad actress, but her work would probably not be described as highfalutin’.  She’s not who you’d expect in a comedy set in 1920s England, based on a play by Noel Coward and starring actors of the caliber of Kristin Scott Thomas and Colin Firth  (yes, Jamie Foxx won an Oscar, but he didn’t do it for his work opposite Biel in Stealth).             Biel plays Larita, an urbane American race car driver who marries a young man from a stuffy, upper class British family.  They’re probably about »

Scarlett Johansson Becomes a Gladiatrix

8 March 2009 11:19 AM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

ScarJo the Barbarian? Looks that way. The Telegraph chatted up Scarlett Johansson recently, and she said she was being cast in something called The Amazon Warrior, set a couple hundred years before the birth of Christ, which as we know, immediately ended all the world's problems.

We haven't heard word one about this flick until now, and there was no casting announcement that came our way. The Telegraph article doesn't mention her co-stars or a director, and in fact, because I found the story through the gossip pages first, I didn't even believe it until I finally tracked down the source. So unless she's putting on one of England's leading papers just for the sport of it, I guess we'll assume this is real.

"I think I'm supposed to be a gladiatrix. These film guys are crazy about gladiatrixes. But do I fit into the Amazon mold? I'm a Danish/Jewish girl from New York. »

Scarlett Johansson Questions Her Amazon Role

5 March 2009 7:30 AM, PST | WorstPreviews.com | See recent Worst Previews news »

Scarlett Johansson has already signed a deal to star in "Amazon," but is now doubting that she "fits the mold" of a warrior woman/female gladiator in 200 BC who takes on the might of an army after her homeland is destroyed. "I think I'm supposed to be a gladiatrix," she said. "These film guys are crazy about gladiatrixes. But do I fit the mold? I'm a Danish/Jewish girl from New York." She added that she has deal with guns and fight scenes in her previous films, but is a bit apprehensive about the prospect of transforming into a tough-girl action star. "I've done weapons training. I've fired all kinds of guns; 9mm semi-automatics, machine guns, shotguns. I've jumped off a 60-foot building. I learnt to ride for The Horse Whisperer," said Johansson. "But I've never done a full-on action role." Click here to read more about "Amazon." »

Johansson Apprehensive Over Amazon Role

4 March 2009 4:10 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Scarlett Johansson is battling with her own self-confidence to take on the role of a bloodthirsty gladiatrix - because she isn't sure she "fits the mould" of a warrior woman.

The sexy actress has signed a deal to star in Amazon, the story of a female gladiator in 200 BC who takes on the might of an army after her homeland is destroyed.

But although the star has dealt with guns and fight scenes in her previous big screen adventures, she's apprehensive at the prospect of transforming into a tough-girl action star.

She says, "I think I'm supposed to be a gladiatrix. These film guys are crazy about gladiatrixes. But do I fit the mould? I'm a Danish/Jewish girl from New York.

"I've done weapons training. I've fired all kinds of guns; 9mm semi-automatics, machine guns, shotguns. I've jumped off a 60-foot building. I learnt to ride for The Horse Whisperer. But I've never done a full-on action role.

"I guess I'm still waiting for my Cirque du Soleil moment. It would be fun." »

Johansson: 'Success Is Down To Hard Work And Luck'

9 January 2009 4:17 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Scarlett Johansson has the secret to success - hard work and a touch of good fortune.

The Lost In Translation star hit the big time aged 13 in 1998 movie The Horse Whisperer and has since gone on to feature in a number of highly-acclaimed movies.

The 24-year-old was always sure she'd star in films, and credits hard work with helping her achieve her life-long ambition.

She tells Moviehole.net, "I wanted to make movies since I was three years old, so I guess my perspective on it is that I was more than surprised by success.

"I feel incredibly lucky to have had success, because I'd seen and I know so many talented people that never get the opportunity. But I am a big believer that putting in the actual hours is kind of what makes a successful career and a lot of luck too, of course. »
