‘Marvin the Martian’ Gets Director, Mike Myers?

22 December 2009 7:45 PM, PST | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

In May 2008, Warner Bros announced a feature film was being developed based on the Looney Tunes’ character Marvin the Martian.  The live-action/CGI hybrid, scheduled for December 2010, is about how the cartoon alien travels to Earth to steal Christmas, but is foiled when he becomes trapped in a gift box.

The La Times’ Hero Complex is reporting Alex Zamm has come aboard as the director.  Zamm is behind such gems as Dr. Dolittle 5: Million Dollar Mutts (I kid you not), Beverly Hills Chihuahua 2, and an upcoming adaptation of “Hong Kong Phooey.”  Paul Kaplan and Mark Torgove are re-writing the script (and also working on CHiPs: The Movie).

The team is already talking to stars who’ll add voices to the cartoons, and Mike Myers’ name has popped up as a possibility for Marvin.

Myers isn’t new to voice overs or children’s movies, cashing in his »

Running Amunk for the Holidays

22 December 2009 11:59 AM, PST | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

Happy holidays, everyone! Those willing and able to drag themselves away from the huge pile of swag under the tree can enjoy the late Heath Ledger's final performance, a Jude Law double bill and a drolly comic Romanian police procedural underneath among other holiday presents that await at the multiplex.

"Alvin and The Chipmunks: The Squeakquel"

With the tagline "Munk Yourself" sounding more like a threat than a come-on, the high-pitched trio of singing rodents return just in time for exhausted moms to plunk the rugrats down at the multiplex after the presents are unwrapped while they snore quietly in the back row. Betty Thomas, who has some kid-themed kid-themed hijinks with on her CV, steps in for the first film's helmer Tim Hill and trades out her experience with real critters on "Dr. Dolittle" for these much less messy (not to mention non-union) digital substitutes. Jason Lee reprises his role as Dave, »

Dinner for Schmucks

Opens: July 23rd 2010

Cast: Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, Zach Galifianakis, Bruce Greenwood, David Walliams

Director: Jay Roach

Summary: A renowned publisher encourages his friends to invite the most pathetic guests possible for their weekly dinner party. Just as they find the most pathetic man yet, the host is injured and ends up trapped with the man all night long.

Analysis: A remake of director Francis Veber's 1998 César award-winning "Le Diner des cons", 'Schmucks' is one of the highest profile comedies of next year with one of the strongest casts for the genre in recent memory. It also marks the return of "Austin Powers" and "Meet the Parents" helmer Jay Roach who has produced several films in recent years but hasn't directed since 2004's "Meet the Fockers".

The question now lies not in the performers or director but the material itself and whether a Gallic comedy can »

Eddie Murphy’s Return To R-Rated Comedy To Be ‘Fluffy?’

20 November 2009 3:04 PM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Fans of old-school Eddie Murphy, one of the greatest stand-ups of all time, may have something to get excited about – because for the first time in over 10 years he has decided to return to that which made him a household name, that which made him great: R-rated comedies. And the comedy he has chosen will be The Misadventures of Fluffy for Paramount.

Wait. What? Nevermind, everyone can sit back down. Really? The Misadventures of Fluffy? I hate even writing that title, let alone watching it. C’mon Eddie, what are you doing? Last thing we heard was that Eddie Murphy had backed out of starring in the Richard Pryor bio-pic and now we’ve got this? He’s picking Fluffy over Richard Pryor.

Now, before everyone decides to chase after him with pitchforks (ala Frankenstein), it should be known that as of right now he’s not starring in this film, »

Eddie Murphy May Be Talking to Some More Fluffy Animals

19 November 2009 4:14 PM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

It's a true shame that the once raunchily hilarious comedian Eddie Murphy has turned into a family film garbage machine. I don't have problems with family films, but rather family films that simply suck. So when I heard the news from THR's Risky Biz Blog that Eddie Murphy is attached to produce and potentially star in The Misadventures of Fluffy, a road trip flick through New York featuring talking animals, I was already worried. But when I heard that it also has "an element of social comedy reminiscent of Murphy's 1980's hit Trading Places," then I joined SlashFilm in hoping the old Eddie Murphy is finally coming back. Obviously talking animals brings back shudder-inducing memories from the beginning of Eddie Murphy's downward spiral with two Dr. Dolittle films (I don't care if both films made $465 million globally between the two, because they were both terrible) but recalling one of »

Almost immediately, the tiny tunesmiths are given the giant task of saving their school’s music program by winning a battle of the band’s contest. Though the boys think winning the contest will be easy, romantic and musical sparks fly when they meet Brittany, Eleanor and Jeannette — also known as The Chipettes.

‘Paul Blart’ Director Helming Short Circuit Remake

27 October 2009 10:03 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Early this summer, we announced that Dimension Films was in the process of giving Johnny 5 a remake-over with a new Short Circuit film. They just about had all of the pre-production people in place to make it happen; all they needed was a director. Dan Milano (Greg the Bunny) was putting together the script; David Foster, who produced the original, was returning to produce the remake and joining him were Ryan E. Heppe and John Hyde. So where did Dimension Films go to find a director? Where everyone else goes when they need to find something, of course - the mall.

Steve Carr, who directed 2009 surprise hit Paul Blart: Mall Cop, has been chosen to direct the Short Circuit remake and that just means one thing - a embarrassingly, unfunny actor will surely be cast as the male lead. What brings me to that conclusion? I’m glad you asked… »

Life is a reservoir dog, old chum: Here come musicals based on hit Sundance films

23 September 2009 5:04 PM, PDT | EW.com - The Movie Critics | See recent EW.com - The Movie Critics news »

I've attended the Sundance Film Festival for the past 15 years, but I confess that I've never heard of the Sundance Institute Theater Lab at White Oak in Yulee, Florida. Now, however, there’s a good reason to stand up and take notice of this organization located deep in the heart of dinner-theater country. Today, it was announced that the Sundance Institute Theater Lab will produce two stage musicals adapted from hit Sundance films. One will be Little Miss Sunshine, the other Like Water for Chocolate. My first reaction to this was a healthy “Why not?” There’s a long, quirky tradition of musicals drawn from Wtf source material (Don Quixote, anyone? How about Doctor Dolittle? Not to mention the recent Berkeley Repertory stage production of Green Day's American Idiot, which I’m totally psyched to see). So mining some of the landmark independent films of the past 20 years sounds »

'Wild Hogs 2: Bachelor Ride' Getting Nude In Europe, Says Tim Allen

22 September 2009 2:00 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Every now and then a movie comes along that delights millions, but ticks off just as many with its safe, non-threatening, seemingly formulaic plotline. I'm thinking back to “Rv,” “Doctor Dolittle,” even the “Ernest Goes To/Saves [insert location/event here]” films that puzzled so many with their success back in the day. Well the latest in this tradition might just be “Wild Hogs,” a harmless trifle of a family film that employed big stars and scatological humor to attract $169 million worth of viewers in 2007. And now there's a sequel on the way.

Recently, at Disney’s D23 Conference, it was announced that the sequel had been titled “Wild Hogs 2: Bachelor Ride” and that it would begin filming soon. So when I caught up with Tim Allen recently, I had to get the scoop on where he and his biker brothers would be heading next.

“We start [shooting] it in May,” Allen said of the sequel, »

One of the most successful SNL stars to branch out into the film world, Chris Farley is a legend in the comedy world.  Imagine if he had survived longer than his 33 years.  One of the most iconic images in the last 20 years of SNL is Farley dressed as a Chippendale’s dancer along with Patrick Swayze. »

Review: Imagine That

12 June 2009 4:32 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Why do bad movies happen to good people? Eddie Murphy gives a very warm, very funny performance as a stressed-out financial executive trying to be a better parent to his seven-year-old daughter in Imagine That, which opened wide today. Evan Danielson is a gentler variation on the wholesome paternal figures he's previously played in Doctor Dolittle, Daddy Day Care, and The Haunted Mansion. In those roles, he's portrayed successful workaholics who've neglected their families to varying degrees.

He was beset by talking animals in Doctor Dolittle and its sequel, by a flock of other people's children in Daddy Day Care, and by ghosts in The Haunted Mansion. In contrast, Imagine That is much more intimate. Evan is beset by only two people: his daughter Olivia (Yara Shahidi), resentful of his neglect, puts a baby blue blanket on her head and talks to a group of imaginary friends; meanwhile, his fellow »
