Although the Australian DVD cover states that this movie is based on a true, it is probably a publicity stunt to garner attention.
The director´s cut makes a much better impression. The new scenes make the plot more logical. However, the strong point of new material are mostly new dialogues. A detailed comparison between both versions can be found here.
